I've had some time for reflection since the end of the 28 Attacks in 28 Days initiative. I think it has allowed me to clear my head a little, and to realize that the doom that I foresaw was perhaps misguided, or at the very least, overstated. I think what I lost sight of, in the final result, was the Glass Half Full, and the truism that All Good Things Must Come To An End. President Obama was, in a way, fated to become President so that, at long last, he can prove to all the doubters what a truly great leader George W. Bush has been.
It has been a glorious 8 years. We must never forget all the wonderful things that have happened. Most importantly, we mustn't allow ourselves to become blinded by all the hardships that the country is currently experiencing, as if they were some kind of a "result" of what immediately preceded their occurence. That is lazy thinking, folks. I'm reminded of the oft-quoted scenario of the rooster crowing and believing that it was he who caused the sun to rise. We must be careful not to apply hastily-derived Cause & Effect theories which make it look as if the Bush Administration's policies caused anything but positive outcomes.

The press has been overflowing with opinion pieces listing one grave problem after another, and of course, the lion's share of them put the blame squarely at the feet of our 43rd President and his stalwart VP. But these so-called problems and "failures" are easily explained, to anyone willing to listen with an open mind:
TORTURE: We don't do it. We do not torture. Anyone who says we did is simply Torturing The Truth. End of story.
THE IRAQ WAR: Freedom and liberty. We killed Saddam. That means we won. The rest is just nit-picking.
9/11: Clinton's fault.
ILLEGAL WIRE-TAPPING: There is no law that says that illegal wire-tapping is a crime. In fact, illegal wire-tapping is actually legal. The law proves it. Plus, any crime that occurred in the past is no longer a violation of law, because one cannot prove (or disprove) something which has already happened. In conclusion, let's just move on to the next one...
KATRINA: Okay, the key word here is "restraint." Imagine all the problems that could have occurred if President Bush had made more of an effort to help people. Honestly-- we could be at war with New Orleans right now. Instead, he wisely chose to apply his free market principles to allow the catastrophe to run its course. Bush's subtle reaction to this crisis won't be appreciated until long after we are all dead.
THE ECONOMIC CRISIS: Caused by the Democrat-controlled congress. And The Poor, whose poverty, it turns out, is contagious.
See? Was that so hard? Simple, easy-to-understand answers for every charge. I'm sure the complainers out there could come up with three or four other supposed "stains" on The Bush Legacy, but you can probably just slightly re-phrase one of the above answers and it will take care of all of them. After all, 9/11 changed everything.

And so: with Bush and Cheney riding off into the sunset, and a new president assuming the mantle of power, where does that leave Mortimer Hayden Smyth? The party I'm affiliated with in tatters, my ideology is on the defensive, and I find that my own personal influence in the corridors of power is at a low ebb. And yet: I am filled with optimism for the coming year.
No, I have not come down with a case of Obama Fever. I still feel that he is the Most Dangerous Man In The History Of The Universe. The reason I feel optimism is that the game has now changed, and to my advantage. Because while leadership and good governance are both extremely difficult, complaining and casting blame is easy. I know what I'm good at, and I know what I'd rather be doing.
2009 is looking very good indeed.

What if the National Weather Service actually caused Katrina by Tampering With Forces Beyond The Bounds Of What Man Was Meant To Know, i.e. predicting the weather? Couldn't we say, with some justification, that the Bush Administration's wise reluctance to foresee the consequences of its other actions may, indeed, have kept the consequences of the Iraq war, the economic meltdown, etc. to what General Buck Turgidson referred to as "moderate and acceptable levels"?
The U.S. invasion of Iraq was a crime on a massive scale leadign to the needless deaths of thosands and pepole -- and I'm NOT talking about American troops OR the Blackwater hired killers
Dubbya didn't do shit about katrina and you know it, scumbag!
The economic collapse is on your watch too.
Try looking at yourself in the mirror and not throwing up, LOSER!!!!
Thats right - they would fall nto the category of reason, which we know is a mistake. Instead we should realize that they were God's reward to repugs for their unwavering faith and constant prayers for peace and prosperity.
This post doesn't deserve a reply, other than a raised glass. Cheers to you, Mr. Smyth, and don't let the door hit you in the butt.
2009 is looking well indeed. Who else offers this country any protection whatsoever from the Most Dangerous Man in the History of the Universe? We're counting on YOU...
Great. That is officially the last time I take The David Ehrenstein Challenge. I am now drenched in my own vomit. Worst Inauguration Day EVER.
If we "won" by killing Saddam, why did we stay? And if we "won", and Iran CLEARLY won by Saddam being killed, why wouldn't Bush even talk to Iran when our mutual interests were so aligned?
And finally, this is clearly satire and I feel like a dork. Nice post!
A: Whoa! Hold on there, Bill Beck! I cannot handle multi-part questions! I suspect you are trying to trick me using logic and my own words against me. If this is the case, then shame on you! (Did I mention that I am drenched in my own vomit? It has been a rough week for me.) I'll answer the second question first: No. The policies of the Bush Administration aren't the cause of ANYTHING. Except good things-- they caused all the good things.
As for the first question, I want to make it clear that I have never expressed any reservations about EXPLOITING the poor-- I just don't want to see pictures of them, or have them anywhere near me. I hope that doesn't sound uncaring. Because I like to think of myself as a caring person. Also, I like to think of globalism as a caring philosophy. I like to think a lot of things. I'm going to go ahead and say "no" for Question #1 as well, because I've actually forgotten what it was, and "no" feels like the safe answer.
Q: If we "won" by killing Saddam, why did we stay?
A: We could not risk the return of Saddam as a zombie, hungry for brains and more ruthless than ever. And as far as I can tell, zombies don't exist-- another huge victory for the Bush Administration.
You remind me of people who believe the earth is flat. No amount of facts will change their mind.
The facts are clear that the US government authorized and used torture. Your claim that "We do not torture" are not supported by the facts. Welcome to the "Flat Earth Society."
A: Yoga Fix-- your laughter, in addition to apparently being of significant volume, is laced with cruelty. I ask you to consider your choice of word:
dweeb (ˈdwēb), n., slang : an unattractive, insignificant, or inept person.
How hurtful. And to answer your question, I have been drinking heavily since November. But before you judge me too harshly, I would look to your (clearly unintentional) wrongful capitalization of the second letter of your comment-- it is you, Yoga Fix, who has proven to be inept. While I remain, even in my drunken state, a confirmed master of majuscules and minuscules.
"You remind me of people who believe the earth is flat. No amount of facts will change their mind."
No less a source of wisdom than NYTimes columnist Thomas L. Friedman has written an entire book which apparently claims just that, sir. I haven't read it, myself, but the title is extremely persuasive, and any book that has been issued in three different hardcover editions must be telling the truth. Besides, it certainly SEEMS flat.
But how, then, to explain the round shape of my Magnetic Levitating Desktop Globe? And how does it float like that? Why is life so confusing???
And I was drinking more heavily when the video was filmed than when the text was written. And I am drinking more heavily than both of them now. But I am still not inappropriately (or ineptly) capitalizing or non-capitalizing letters, be assured of that.
What's more, I accidentally caught another glimpse of myself in the mirror and I David Ehrensteined all over the place.
Thanks. Your response gave me quit a chuckle. I read Friedman's columns all the time. I have not read his book either, so you must be wrong!
But some didn't see it.
(Excellent work, by the way. Satire, like good sushi and re-runs of 'The West Wing', never gets old.)
