Something about Mary

My mother was one of the most naturally comedic women I have ever known.  When it comes to, “Mom Stories,” trust me, I’ve got a million of ‘em. Did you see the movie, “Mother” starring Albert Brooks and Debbie Reynolds? I swear, my siblings and I considered suing the studio, convinced that someone had spied on us, all of our lives, and had plagiarized our material. Example: The mall parking lot scene was an exact depiction of my shopping excursions with Mom. It didn’t matter what the weather, she would drive up and down rows of cars for an hour, if necessary, to find a vacancy, maybe 5 or so spots closer to the store, where she wanted to shop, for say, 10 minutes.

When my sons were teens, she wanted to be a “cool” grandma and made an effort to stay current, in order to relate. I remember on one Sunday drive, she turned my guys in the backseat, who were talking music, and said, “Hey, your grandma is hip. She’s up on the pop music scene. I know the groups, “Milly Vanilla” and “Bun-Jivey!” My kids’ eyes bugged as they, jabbed each other’s ribs, spurted their sodas from every possible orifice and burst into uncontrollable waves of howling. It was days before they could look at one another without being overcome by another wave of hilarity.

Mom completed two years of college before she married Dad. She was an avid reader and writer. She was far beyond bright. She was also somewhat naive and childlike at times, and had a unique way of erroneously repeating things the way she heard them. She really thought there were 7 humans that should be depicted in a manger scene, Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, The Magi and, (are you ready for this?) “Round John Virgin,” ‘nuff said.

I’ll end this short memoir with my two all-time, what I can only label, “Mom-Manglings” of familiar clichés.” Though the resulting and unintended meanings were hysterical, the fact that she delivered them in all seriousness, made it impossible to stifle our fits of giggles.

#1. “Don’t bite the hand that sticks its’ foot in your mouth!”

#2. “You created your own monster…now sleep in it!”

 Oh, how I miss her…

AND she was the most wonderful writer and sender of cards. She was priceless and I am beyond grateful that I had the privilege of meeting her. Hugs.
you are fortunate to posses such memories! --rated--
I love posts like this that are so sentimental and sweet and yet funny and show that the most precious side of our loved ones is the side that so few ever see ... "round John Virgin" ... absolutely priceless.
Wow - three generations of gorgeous, talented, spirited women! What amazing DNA! And what a beautiful, fun memoir. So very, very cool. Thanks for sharing, mothership!
Mom sounds great. It is nice to share such funny memories.
What a lovely way to honor your mother. Happy Mother's Day to you and her memory.
rated for her beauty and yours
What a wonderful tease about your mother and her endearing traits. A really lovely expression of your sense of humor as molded by your mother.

It's very easy to see where you and your daughter get their beauty from, inside and out.

Thank you for sharing!

Lovely! And she was so beautiful. I am glad you have so good memories of your mother.
You are three generations all good writers so it seems. And you look just like your mom. Nice tribute, and Happy Mother's Day.
How glamorous she looks in that last photo.

This is a lovely memorial.
VR- She (Dad, my sibs and I) considered your return to us to be our ultimate blessing. Hugs 2

MM- At this age? You betcha!

IM- Love, love your posts! Knew I would getcha' with the "RJV." (wink)

Owl-How flattering to all of us! I'll accept on our behalf.

DB-She was and thanks.

ladyfarmer- Thank you. I hadn't even thought of Mother's Day. (on a conscious level) Must be why she has been gentle on my mind lately.

Buffy-Coming from you, I am truly touched. It's never too late to make an "old" friend.

MR-I'm glad you're glad. Me too.

Sarah-Mom's are like that, yeh, they are. Kinda' like a fruitcake...mostly sweet with a few unidefinable and indigestible .

Lea-Thank you so much. What a lovely complement. Happy mother's day to you, as well.

m.a.h.-She drove me to school in a bathrobe robe and curlers, but she cleaned up good! lol

Thank you all, for your support. I am reading and commenting as fast as I can. Each of you intrigues me. I'll be visiting you often.

Tomorrow I'll introduce you to Dad.
Good grief, those are some strong (and beautiful) genes. If she had VR's hair style and lipstick, they'd be doubles.
