I'm an old, short, fat, unsightly, grouchy, reformed troll with a bad attitude and a cricket bat. ---------------------------------------------------- I need to state clearly that English is not my first language. There are upwards of 600,000 words in the English language. In my native language there are a mere 11,000 and most of those are entire concepts (kind of like the theory of relativity) rather than words which translate individually. ----------------------------------------------------- Free advice: Don't.

Honor...

Rate: 8 Flag

Honor is a noun, a verb and an adjective.

As a noun honor is defined as:  honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions

As a verb honor is defined as:  to hold in honor or high respect; revere.

As an adjective honor is defined as:  of, pertaining to, or noting honor.

Synonyms for honor include: honesty, integrity and sincerity - all of which refer to the highest moral principles and the absence of deceit or fraud.

Tell me...

Where is the honor in the United States today?

Sadly, I see no evidence of honor existing in our current society.

Even with your definition I have no idea what honor is, nor, I suspect, do most of the people that talk the most about how important it is.
I suppose you could ask that of any government anywhere in the world and get the same answer: nowhere.
MrsRaptor…if you honestly do not see any honesty, fairness, integrity, respect, integrity, or sincerity in the United States at all, I suspect it is because you have closed your eyes and (figuratively) heart to it. There are plenty of all those things here…just as I am sure, there are plenty up in Canada also. Fact is, I am sure plenty of all those things can be found in almost every society on the planet.

Yeah, there’s more than enough insensitivity, dishonesty, lack of integrity and respect to go around, but surely you can see a healthy amount of the other side of that coin.

Just in a bad mood today…or are you serious here?
That's a toughie question.
Where's sterling character,
Virtue, backbone, balls, guts,
Lovingkindness, gentlemen,
Ladies, and mutual respect?

You cause me to ponder:
`
Adoration, stand on 2- feet,
and we wonder why folk grovel,
robs/steal, backbites, slanders,
and it wise to stay-clear of creep.
Assassination character is rampant.
That's worst than outright murder.
The one slandered has to walk about.
Jealousy is a vice greater than hatred.
It be wise to think about beauty/love.
Blind creeps lead other to the ditches.
Self-Right-Folk are blind lead blinds.
Mule wear blinder and still get spook.
Project virtues. Cultivate goodness.
Dark evil prowls to devour and kill.
"Killing" is not always done in war.
Never surrender to dark-evil Force.
Principalities can inhabit a body.
It's wise to examine. Choose Life.

I read in a bible?
Humor Ma and Pa.
Honor what's true.

Virtue. Ay honor!
I go on/on. Smile.
Not my definition Zack... Webster's. And I know well most people have no idea what it is. That was kind of the point.

I'm not sure it exists anymore Matt.

Serious as a heart attack Frank... And I have been actively looking for SOME sign of honor for years... without success finding any evidence to support the notion it still exists. I'm a US Citizen who was living in Canada and is now back in the US (more fool me) but the Canadian government was never "mine" nor my problem to watch... I leave that to Canadians.

Art, if I have given you pause for thought I am happy.

I suggest you start by looking into a mirror. I think you will find it there. And with that start, maybe all the other examples will become clear.

In any case, I personally see honesty, fairness, integrity, respect, and sincerity all over the place...just as I see unfairness, lack of integrity, respect, and sincerity. Both sides of all those things are there...and are plentiful. Keep looking.
Looking to the government for honor may be your first mistake.

I do believe honor to be all around us, it's everywhere. I see it in the kid doing his homework instead of cheating on a test. I see it in that parent who goes to work each day, pays their taxes and cares for their children. I see it in the person who donates to the food bank. When it comes to honor, size doesn't matter, it can be the little things all adding up to a larger whole.

Don't give up looking, Mrs. Raptor, it's out there.
I think honor is one of those subjective things. It can be big or small, and sometimes it depends on your point of view. We end up struggling over which honor code is the right one.
Sure there's honor -- the honor among thieves.
This is much like K's comment (Men In Black I) about the difference between 'people' and 'person'. Many are the persons who evidence these qualities - but people, now, is a different matter.. :(.

A person is capable of greatness - people are just a herd.

Oversimplification, but essentially the way it seems.

Rated for Diogenes.
I suspect that you can, and do, see honour in individuals very often. I also suspect that what you might be looking for is is something I might call "social honour" or "societal honour"; an undercurrent, or thread that runs through the whole society to such a degree that honourable dealings and treatment is the norm rather than the exception. The kind of honour that would leave a person, be he private citizen or politician, embarrassed to be found without.

If that indeed is the kind of honour you seek, it will, in this society, be very hard to find now. We gave it up in favour of profit, some time ago.
