I can't live in urban areas. I've tried but I just can't do it... the noise, the pollution, the not being able to trust anyone... NONE of those things are things which I am willing to deal with on a regular basis.
I don't lock my doors... Matter of fact my doors don't even HAVE locks on them.
I live out in the boonies. We aren't talking "20 minutes from Roanoke" here... I live WAY out in the boonies... literally 100 miles from *anywhere* - the nearest MALL is 100 miles away.
We thought there was cause for celebration when the local movie theater started offering TWO choices for movies *and* started changing them once a week instead of once a month! Seriously... we did.
It's "the bushes"... We still have to pipe in daylight. Do NOT expect your 4G "phone" to work out here in the bushes. It *won't*... some of our towers out here are still running ANALOG - do ya REALLY think that toy is going to work?
Drugs? We have a few out here in the boonies but not many. What few we have I am likely to hear about and I am likely to pick up the phone and call any one of several off duty state police officers at home and invite them over for coffee so the KIDS can give them the information they need to DEAL with the problem. That's the way it works out here in the boonies.
Drive by shootings? Nope - though we DID have a stupid fool shoot at his ex-wife's house with the cops standing on her driveway so I suppose we COULD push the definition of "drive by shooting" to count that ONE incident if we must.
Gangs? Not unless you consider the ongoing (for more than 30 years that *I* can swear to) differences between "farm kids" and "town kids" to be gangs. I somehow don't think Levi's versus Dockers qualifies as "gangs" though unless we are really pushing the definition of a "gang".
Car Jackings? Umm... our more "rowdy" local teens are likely to take the odd car for a "joyride" but nobody is stealing people's cars at gunpoint or knifepoint. Like me, people leave the keys in them. I've had this particular car since February... and it took me all of two days to start leaving the keys in it. Why? Mainly because I can never remember where the devil I PUT the keys if I take them out of the ignition and it took me 2 days to LOSE both sets of keys to my car.
Murders? Not many... maybe a dozen a year within a 100 mile radius. MOST of those the results of Domestic Violence.
Break ins? Again not many... a couple dozen a year. Why break into someone's house to STEAL something when if you ASK for it the odds are high they will GIVE it to you for nothing and save you a few years in prison?
I changed the diapers of MOST of the kids in town, went to their parents weddings, went to their grandparents funerals, etc... These are people who KNOW me and who *I KNOW* in ways most do not know their neighbors.
I call off duty state police officers at home and "suggest" they stop by for coffee when one of the teens who comes through the door tells me about someone selling drugs in the area... the county sheriff is one of my cousins ... I slept with the city police chief in my younger and wilder days... I live less than a mile from EMS, Fire, THREE different police departments and the hospital (which the emergency room for is directly across the street) ... Do ya REALLY think anyone is going to "chance it" for anything other than a "thrill"?
It's THE BOONIES ...The sticks... the back of beyond... WAY out in the middle of nowhere. A place where a truly warped woman can tease judges about using a flogger on them (though I can't tease that particular judge about it any more - his funeral was a week ago) without fear she's going to be arrested for teasing him.
Anyone coming to my door is, with 99.99% probability, someone I KNOW and have known for years and years. They KNOW I took the batteries out of the doorbell and that "someday" I will replace the batteries. They know when "someday" is likely to be too so they just walk in, raid the refrigerator, pour themselves a cup of coffee, use the restroom, comment that I need to mop the floor again, plonk down on the couch and yatter...
And all of that up there is why there aren't locks on my doors and why I wouldn't use them even if there were. It's why I leave my keys in the ignition of my car. It's why I can't live in an urban area.
Y'all are all welcome to live in places where you have to be afraid of your neighbors... I'll stay out here in the sticks and LIVE rather than living in fear.
