The sun had passed underneath the thin layer of high cloud, as the earth tilted away from it, until the sun was lighting the cloud from beneath. This for an astonishing twenty minutes of Eastward flight. Because you can see the ground better in this picture, the way the light came up from beneath is more visible.
I woke up at Adam's place in Peacham, to see this outside as the sun rose, the steaming snow erasing the distinction between ground and air:
