It's not just the school kids on that altar. It's also the future of our nation when those kids grow and start voting and rearing families of their own.

The more control we give to the state, the federal government, and most importantly, the textbook publishers, the more susceptible education in our nation become to fads, political agendas, and religious zealots hidden in cloaks of rationality and fairness. Curriculum should be placed squarely under local control, and teachers (who are trained and educated to be experts) should be treated as experts a be given a greater roll in selecting the materials for their classes and the methods of presentation. Sure, the local control solution will still be susceptible to fads, politics, and zealots, but it won't effect an entire generation of our nations youth.
