"The electoral college is a ticking time bomb within the constitution," Michael Young, USA Today, May 1998

It's time to get rid of the electoral college. It's an anachronism, a holdover from an era when communications took days, weeks and months.
The year 2000 saw the electoral victory handed over by the Supreme Court to the candidate receiving the smallest number of votes.
Twice before in U.S. history the winner of the popular vote lost the elctoral tally.
This is just wrong and should not happen in these times.
In each election cycle there are calls for the end to this system but after the elections these fade away.
It's time to put an end to this outdated electoral relic.

My concern w ditching the current system is that could persuade candidates to ignore our least populous states during campaigns and as they govern.
Nevertheless, it's an idea worth discussing and I'm pleased you've brought it up. rated.
Jonathan,
Re: Electoral college
I'm sure you have seen how the candidates have been ignoring, for the most part, states solidly considered in theirs or the opponents camp.
There are many problems with ths archaic system, it's not democratic etc. but the biggest problem is that not all votes count the same. In small population states one elector represents more people than is so in larger population states. Furthermore some states allocate electors in an all or none manner while others apportion electoral votes according to the percentages registered in those states. It skewers the vote one way or another as we have already seen, especially so in 2000.
