The bomb in my kitchen

Rate: 18 Flag

I got a Tassimo machine a few weeks ago and have been enjoying cappuccino, latte, cafe crema, chai and hot chocolate.  Mostly cappuccino.

This is a latte, but looks the same...tastes much the same.

The other day the news came out that a number of these contraptions have exploded, causing 2nd-degree burns.

I was devastated. Would I have to go back to brewed coffee?

Or, god forbid, the powdered stuff.

There has been a recall.  Not of the whole machine - the company will be sending out new "disks" to replace a defective part.  Some of the little coffee packets have also been recalled.

I figure I'll wait patiently for the disk replacement.  Easy to replace, the company assures us.  Meanwhile, when the machine is doing its thing, hissing and clunking, I'll just stay on the other side of the room.

Myriad, do you have enough things plugged into the wall receptacle?
The idea of exploding coffee packets is hilarious. Can you wear protective gear when making coffee?
Push the button and run! It's worth it!
Maybe they should change the name from
Nabob Latte to Napalm Latte
Larry, haha, but I'm very careful to only operate one thing at a time.

Sirenita - I think pushing the button and running is the best solution.

Dianaani - exactly!! Can't go back to plain coffee once I've had my very own cap.
Larry - "napalm latte" indeed!
So that's what Spiro Agnew meant by "nattering nabob!"
Better get a Hazmat suit.

Lezlie
Lezlie - I'm thinking maybe a plexiglas room divider...
Invest in a pair of safety glasses while you wait patiently.

Another precaution, simply use a broom stick to click the on button and stay at a safe distance, lord knows we need our cappuccino...
Asia - haha, I could probably come up with a broomstick.
asia rein... the crack about the broomstick was uncalled for!
Can you plug it in outside? Who doesn't like a good latte but having it come with a random Semtex feature is a major drawback.
Good God, wear Kevlar when you go in there!

It's worth it for home-brewed espresso.
Abrawang - I did think of plugging it in outside!
Nana - I wouldn't dream of having a pressure cooker ... but I can live w.o. home-made beans, but espresso in its various forms is the elixir of life.
Tho right now I'm having a bit of cranberry wine...
Had a similar experience when my brain was recalled for the same reason. The disk didn't work and unfortunately the warranty's expired so I can't get a replacement.
I think you're safe...after all, look at that first pic...it's worth the risk!!!
Just take caffeine pills. They taste better than coffee anyway. There is no reason to drink the brown crap, with that terrible flavor - and yes, all coffee has terrible flavor. The only reason people drink it is to ingest enough caffeine to stay awake. You have to dose it up with sugar and artificial creamer to try to keep from throwing it up before it takes effect.

Stick to caffeine pills. Stop living the lie.
Funny story. I guess I don't have enough appliances.
Aw, sometimes it's good for us to live dangerously. =o) Wouldn't the neighbors be wondering if they saw you carry your little buddy into a back yard bomb shelter? =o)

Still even if it seems like an unlikely danger, third degree burns are no damn fun. Hide behind the couch until you're sipping that nice foamed milk.

That looks just like all the stuff I have plugged into one socket in my kitchen...
For a cappuccino in the morning, I'd take my chances too.~r
Kevlar sounds good when you get a caffeine jones.
Margaret - I think there's possibilities of a class-action suit...

Brazen - definitely worth the risk - esp. first thing in the morning - espresso with some milk-like substance to mellow it out

Neutron - some of have weird tastes: I like coffee (no sugar) and hate parsnips

Phyllis - I'm thinking of tossing out the rest of my appliances and just sticking da bom.

Shiral - one of the benefits of living in the country is the neighbors can't see

Tink - I'm miles and miles from coffee houses, hardly ever pass one. I NEED this...

Algis - haha

Frank - and that was the only socket visible ... there are others (but I did get a second line installed)

Joan - a kindred soul!

Linnnnn - but, yes, keep the kevlar handy...
I thought this was a post about terrorism! Thanks for the warning Myriad, my daughter has one of those up at school. I'll pass this on. And yes, God forbid, do stay away from the instant stuff!!
Whoa! I'm glad I don't like coffee! Be careful!
Scarlett - the powder (actually 'freeze-dried' granules) was grabbed in desperation when my previous coffee-maker died. Do tell your daughter - no telling when one of these babies might blow.

Alysa - do not feed the Jack Russell totem caffeine!
