Hope OS Does not Change to Characterless International But

Rate: 8 Flag

"I would have run back to Blogger as fast as I could, where I'd been for the previous six months with nary a comment or hit to my name, tail between my legs, and continued to toil in anonymity.

To all of you who now are feeling woefully inadequate and downtrodden, I ask one question:  Why do you care?

Are you here to slobberingly court the approval of a few erudite professionals whom you'll never please, even on your best days?  Are you willing to go in directions that are uncomfortable for you or go against your nature just because someone said he or she would never continue reading something that didn't hook them with the first sentence?  Are you now paranoid about putting that first word down or clicking "publish" because you think someone is going to sneer at you or that you don't measure up?

Maybe instead of getting upset, you should remember why you're here.

This is Open Salon.  It is not the New Yorker.  It is not Vanity Fair.  It is not Paris Match...

I love Open Salon because every day I find something that surprises or delights me, something that makes me laugh or that brings a tear to my eye, or something that makes me look at the world a little differently.   It may not be prose.  It may be a poem or a cartoon or a photograph or even a video or a link. I just never know.

Some of the most interesting or eye-opening things I've read have been the insightful comments made on different posts.

Sometimes I'll read something I consider "so-so" but then I read a little further and a sentence will jump out at me and I'll think, "Wow, I wish I could have written that."  I'll read things I disagree with but am grateful nonetheless for that person's point of view.  And every now and then I'll stumble on something that no one commented on or rated and it's just so good I want to cry.  And I'll wonder if that person was afraid to ever post again because of it.

Not everyone here is looking for an agent or a book deal.  In the same way that an awful lot of people paint or take pictures or sculpt with no illusions they're ever going to be featured at a gallery opening, I assume most people are here for the joy of creative expression and for the wonderful interaction and support of their peers."

And I had come here so I could read typical Americans writing about typical American issues in a typically American fashion.

So why then did I suggest the Cover change a bit?

Simply because they say they had no money. They said spam was clogging the place and they had to have people work for free. They said pages did not load the way they should.

I could see that Google did not pick up OS posts on searches easily. I could see that I missed postings of people that were not on my list if I came in three days late. I could see the Topics widget does not work very well because people TAG inappropriately.

I read a plenty outside of here, for work mostly. But I never leave my house for various reasons these days. OS is the only place I come to for human contact and for reading for pleasure.

I have grown to love this place and some of the people here I feel closer to, than some of the people I associate with in my real life. Thanks to the way lifestyle changed since we entered the computer age, most of my real life friends that live abroad or got married out of country I lost touch with. I dislike socializing with colleagues or nosey neighbours.

It is nicer here.

So, I tried telling people - in my way, hey, please stop complaining, read Douglas Moran's post about what you have going for you despite all your problems. Who does not have problems in the world?

If there are problems on OS - well, then let us get up and do something about it or let the people that want to do something about it, do it.

I also pointed out ways OS was degenerating into a sad site, where people abuse, people leave because they feel threatened or violated.

I do not want OS to turn characterless international. Why, there are plenty of websites like that. But yes, it would be great to have posts neatly arranged on the Cover under Sections, as it is at the Salon page. Also, it should help garner more traffic if we can have topics of General interest on Cover - like the American School system, LGBT Rights, American Food or American Fad or Animals or Smoking or Libyan Intervention etc.

The local fare can be featured on one of the sidebars. Most read can become a wideget on the top with the Topics Editor's choice etc. What is the point of having the same stuff on both "Cover "and the sidebar, anyway?

Instead of complaining about falling standards in writing, maybe we should go read the irregular stuff and not just posts by people we have on our lists or by people we think we understand. What is the fun in only being with people that are like me???? Why then, I would rather stay home and be with the family!!! Easier to do, no?

That is all I had to say on my last two posts - and Tink, I really truly loved the party you guys gave me the other night. I  rose in the East and I would in the end set in the West and I know I would die alone and probably in a hospital, and might need hospice and I would be happy if they organize a send off in that manner, for me, when my time comes - familiar faces around me laughing and talking and chatting and having fun in a good way, the sound of their voices easing me gently into the other life...while I doze off peacefully - soaking in conversation about gardening -

For life is seasonal, readers, rants and posts come and go, friends I hope  can remain constant ...

Alright, we're thinking alike today! Yes, this place can be improved, hell, what can't. But on the whole, I haven't found another place like it on the internet. There are some great people here that I call friends, however viral. So, great post Rolling, I guess great minds do think alike, hah!
Dunno about 'Great' but Minds Alive/Awake also need to be able to have great fights once in a while so ideas can flow - they call it brainstorming or barstorming or barnstorming or something like that in your culture :| I enjoy them all :)
"refreshing and strong, somewhat like OS when we're woven in" Junk1 said that. Isn't that true of any complex community?
Once the authors have released a certain creation out into the world, have let their baby go - it then belongs to whoever loves it, takes it, accepts it as their own. So, it is with OS, or should be? Don't you think, Nana?
This is the second piece I've read today which encourages my instincts to stick around OS to write and also to read the excellent posts of some very talented writers.
Ahhhh! You're welcome!! When I die I hope Nana and the rest(including you!!) show up at my wake going, "Where's the free cake? We were promised free cake!!"

;D
Why is "going in directions that make you uncomfortable" a bad thing? I mean, if you don't try out different points of view, even different ways of being, and really act on them, then the challenging part of being challenged is empty. Then it's just a jumble of words. Pretty rigid point of view.

And yes I've tried it out the rigid thing for myself...I didn't like it.
R
Linda Cooper, hope you are not disappointed and hopeyou remember to be a 'community member' when the need arises to act memberly bec thats where the charm of this place lie.

Tink, yes, ok, we would eat a lot of cake at your wake - you are funny man, but sometimes I get so damned angry with you - er can you help find out how and why Disco Fett's blog disappeared? Can you help him reinstate it? I hadn't even read all of his content after I discovered him. All his mail is missing too, it isn't very nice to come and see your blog is gone!

SkinnyDave, Margaret Feike is not saying going in directions different is a bad thing, she is saying, would you choose that path to appease another. She is not saying it is bad if you have chosen it for yourself of your own free will. Anything that is undertaken under pressure, is bad. If I had to eat cake at Tink's wake under a death threat from you, then that would be bad. That is what she is saying. She is saying be different all you want, but not bec someone else is making you be different by choosing to not accept you as you are. Get it, now?

Fett, Tink can help and as Myriad says, they reinstated hers but it needed squawking - can you squawk? (heck, I dunno how to spell that word) - we can join in the squawk - I feel so very, very sorry. And disappointed and sad that you lost your blog. It also could be that you might have made a mistake - you see if you make changes to this page it would have affected everyone's page. Even though it is maddening and I can imagine how you feel right now, getting mad will not help, so let us take this step by step and see if it can be solved, yes? And please keep your head and do not curse or aggravate people - we need people - hugs to you for trying on behalf of everyone here. OS should actually invite a members' forum to listen into what they have to say about improving the site and invite members like you on board to volunteer and help I feel. Only you let your mouth shoot off and you can be pretty cranky which is unpleasant if one is at the receiving end you know that, right? PM.
This is the type of comment that Fett, aka the savior of OS, posts. Note in particular his fascination with my sex life.

EMMA - post away. I want nothing from you, and I never have. Well, that's not true. I wanted to show how willing a person like you would be to start a flame war in a post about the glory of OS, thus negating everything written above. Thank you for obliging me on that one.

I've always admired a certain part of you - your willingness to fight for your friends. It's an admirable quality. That is the sum total, however, of what I find to be useful about you.

The exposure I could have gotten from you would have been from people who think that you writing is good for anything but the lining of my cat's litter box. I want that kind of exposure like I want the exposure to the many and varied venereal diseases one would get through unprotected sex with you.

Not venom, but that was pretty bacterial...maybe it'll go viral since I'm so concerned with exposure.

Please play along with me...It is gonna be so much fun to run circles around you, "the real writer".

Death of the Fetts

Emma, I know it bothers you and would have upset me if I had been at the receiving end of that kind of thing, but from what he said at Scanner's to you and reading this one, I can't help but think he kind of likes you :) actually, and you won't reciprocate, so what is he supposed to do? And now he lost his blog - he is upset too - am amused and sad and flummoxed - he might not be a bad person - Emma.
I like the idea Rolling of a way for us all to interact and suggest improvements here. I liked the idea of sections. I get peaved when peoples whole blogs disappear.
I do like the sharing of views here even if I don't agree with them.
I like to think this place shows off the best and even the worst of life.
I hope you are always a constant...
Rolling, I beg to differ. It doesn't matter a damn to me whether he likes me or not. That said, in my fairly long experience as a human being, his behavior is unacceptable no matter who he says it to. I have venereal diseases according to him. WTF? He also said repeatedly that I am a "shitty writer," "sophmoric," on and on and on. Scanner deleted his long lists of insults. The fact that you consider him a friend and encourage him in this behavior means that I can no longer associate with you.
And where is it written that I have to "reciprocate" to someone who has done nothing but insult me ever since he arrived at OS? Have you gone mad? Do you mean I should willfully engage with a person who has done nothing but send me nasty PMs, berate me publicly and denigrate every aspect of my life, including my sexual life, for reasons that I can't even imagine? I think you have drunk the Kool Aid. Is that honestly what you consider the future of OS to be? I had nothing to do with the editors deleting his blog so why on earth should I be a punching bag for it? Disgusted.
Emma I have written him at least four times since morning asking him to back off of you and stop name calling - so I have done my bit, and he did not name-call you here, you yourself posted it here and I couldn't delete YOU, a writer I respect and am fond of could I? Do not, please, misunderstand or attack me for what I have not done to you. Don't stop thinking for you think is why I admire you, try not to lose that over what he is saying. By the way he has stopped, so you stop too.
Mission - glad you shared my peeve this once, what affects one in a group affects everyone in effect, in the long run, ... well, am as bad as any other and common, I try ...what can I say, you can help, you belong here

Padraig, this is about OS, yes, your choices make you who you are
I do feel sorry that both Emma and you lost your original blogs - it is sad.
And I sincerely believe if Tink said he is talking to you and would try to help, he would in the end, help.
Your support of the troll Fett negates everything you pretend to care about at OS. Perhaps you need to think about that Rolling.
He is not a Troll. Trolls are stupid, insensitive, inarticulate, destructive, disruptive, uninteresting, conscienceless cribbers. Fett likes you. And so I like him. For this once Emma, maybe you are not right and I am?
