The Sister Wives Court Case: Will The Mitt Hit The Fan?

Rate: 1 Flag

Mitt Romney's having so much fun dismantling his campaign that his Church as decided to get in on the fun.

When the Mormon Church spent millions fighting against the rights of gays to marry, they took a major PR hit.  And it didn't help that they were gearing up for Mitt Romney, their white horse, running for president.  So, they spent several more millions on ads all over the Internet trying to convince people that Mormons are just like you.

Well, something tells me that they should have saved their money, because as people learn of an ongoing court case, their PR is going to take another hit.

In Brown vs. Herbert, otherwise known as the Sister Wives case, a Mormon family is trying to get the polygamy laws repealed.  Seriously.

So, while the Mormon Church attempted to prevent gay couples from being able to marry because it would damage traditional marriage, they now are in court attempting to redefine marriage to once again allow polygamy.  The hypocrisy flows like a champagne fountain.

I'd like to be a fly on the wall at the Focus on the Family meeting when they realize that one of their erstwhile fellow warriors on the marriage front is in the process of making things a lot more complicated for them.  Can you imagine that phone call?  "But you said you believed in traditional marriage! We didn't mean that tradition!"

And what of Bishop Mitt Romney who swore to uphold the Defense of Marriage Act?  Will he stand with the religious right and continue to suggest that marriage is one man and one woman or will he stand with his own church and re-establish polygamy?  Will Ann stay queen of the castle or will she have to make room for another dressage pony in the stable?

And how will this effect how middle American Christians see Mitt?  They were already suspicious of his religious views and with this court case, will they be more likely to re-evaluate what Mitt's attitudes are.  Since the religious right is so concerned about the country being under Sharia law, will they question whether a vote for Mitt will move the country into becoming a Mormon country if this case goes forward?

Between reminding voters of Romney's personal hypocrisy and alienating the Religious Right, this case might make Romney the first presidential candidate to end up  in negative numbers.
