A Laurel, and Hearty Welcome, to the new Editor

Rate: 66 Flag

Some of us here in the Open Salon Blogging Platform and Sanatorium were celebratory when Judy Berman took over as editor a while back. Others of us were less pleased, and there were some who were outright cynical about the whole thing. Then there were those of us, myself included, who said "I'll wait and see."

So I've waited, and I've seen, and I've got to say: I'm pretty impressed. Being slow, it took me a while to realize that Judy has made a strong effort to find material for the cover and for Editor's Picks which doesn't come just from the pool of usual suspects. Over and over in recent days, as I make my way around Open, I've been running across posts with EPs on them and saying to myself  " An EP? But he's never been noticed before!" or "Whoa, she's on the cover? How cool; I've always thought her posts deserved more attention."  Finally though, it sank in; what I'm seeing is an editor who's gone out of her way to get down in the trenches and see what there might be of interest outside of posts from a fairly narrow part of the OS spectrum.  I can (and have been) as hard on the OS staff as the next person, but considering the wider variety of posts making cover, and other points such as the return of the New Posts feed, I feel the need to extend  a laurel, and hearty welcome, to our new editor Judy Berman.  She's doing a bang-up job as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah yeah, I stole the title from "Blazing Saddles." So sue me already:)
Nan, I think so far, so good. I've also seen some EP's go to people I hadn't seen before. I hope she doesn't cave in to the brasses heat and change!
Yes, lots of new faces and lacking in some we don't miss. Rather nice!
Hey Pokey got an EP today!
bang up is for sure. kudos to her for getting a whole lot more right than wrong. and to you for saying so. good one, jeff.
I've noted the positive changes as well. She's very good, I think, and very responsive: They made an excellent choice, although how long she's going to last herding the OS cats is anyone's guess. A long time, I hope.

And it's very nice not to see the usual suspects hogging the EPs and cover.

(Not that I can complain very much about l'ancien regime: Two of my few posts on here were -- surprisingly -- given cover shots.)
You stole the title. Lawsuit in the works.
A very thoughtful post of recognition.

How hearty of you nana!
I have to agree. In fact I do agree.
For she's a jolly good fellow

For she's a jolly good fellow

For she's a jolly good fell....um, I mean, lady, I mean, er, blogger person editor

Which nobody can deny!

Though I'm sure there are those will; that's the nature of the Open Salon Blogging Platform and Sanatorium. God love it.
yeah, I like her! not that my vote counts :D but she's got it
NanaJ, I'm glad you said this because I've been so out of the habit of looking at the cover that I hadn't noticed. You're absolutely right! Lots of different names there and quite refreshing. I had noticed that she's been a lot more visible as far as doing the open calls and was impressed with that.
You go, Judy! We've needed you! Badly!
A decided improvement.
I'm going to ask her to marry me. Don't tell her.
Chuck there will be a lot of let down OS women with that one...
agree, agree...and the title made me laugh and remember a hilarious movie...thanks!
"Judy has made a strong effort to find material for the cover and for Editor's Picks which doesn't come just from the pool of usual suspects."

Bullshit. She hasn't found me and I'm brilliant.
Glad you posted this Nana -- I've noticed a big difference, too! When I saw CK Dexter Haven and bobbot on the cover -- that was like . . . well, it was pretty cool.
I'm impressed she put so much Haiti coverage on the cover. Imagine the old regime . . . it would have been all Conan, all the time.
The Haiti coverage is a good example of the change Travis. It's definitely a cool thing to see.

Which nobody can deny!

Which nobody can deny!

Which nobody can deny!

Cappy is a humble and deserving bastard,

Which nobody can deny!
isn't a sanatorium a place where one goes to, ahem, rest? are you sure that's what this is
the server ate my comment. it was much funnier than that little piece o' comment that's right above this one. fucking servers. maybe judy could see about doing something about the comment-eating servers? oh, okay. i get it.
I agree! The true test was when Zen Haitian got an EP for her stellar reporting on the Haiti crisis. I was impressed, because she actually has a background in Hatian issues, and deserved to be read.

So far, so good, Naneh.
Xenon, it was Chantal's post which first got me thinking things might have changed for the better. And Candace; we all need a little "rest" sometimes:P
When I saw the cover changing, in a very fluid way, and reflecting much more diversity I wrote and thanked Ms. Berman - and also for the prominence of my posts about my mother's death, which ended up providing a very intense and needed comfort to me from this community.
She wrote back immediately and was open and gracious and enthusiastic...I think we are seeing our future in action, and I could not be more pleased.

And, seconded about ZenHaitian immediately getting cover. That is exactly what needs to be seen, and she/they are on it.

It's really fucking great, and it's only been a few weeks!
I am a bit disappointed as I had planned to begin a combination Food/TV Talent Show/Medical Advice /Haiku column from my bedside as I recovered from a sex change operation, but will obviously need to now blog elsewhere.
I'm too new to yay or nay (I know, my "newness" is getting old, but in this case it does mitigate), but I'd heard that Bendan Bendan Bendan III was on deck for making cover. Not trying to start a rumor, mind you, more like trying to stem one, if that were possible.

Nice job, Nana!
Although I haven't had an EP since Judy took over, I do have to agree with you, nana. The EP and FP choices have been very good overall, and I am glad to see a lot of new writers getting some recognition.
That is valuable endorsement, I'll just take your word for it, nana. Even though, if your post "Good News Sunday" is not EP material, I don't know what is.

Ditto that nanetehay, but no hard feelings on my end either to the other people. This is a difficult economic environment, and I think they have set up a cool place, which is why I am here. But give nanetehay his front page :)
I actually look at the cover now! Progress it was nice of you to notice and be thankful...pretty darn cool in fact!
What a fine you mess you got us into this time, Ollie.
Just in case nobody has already said.
R
What makes you happy, makes me happy! :)
(except for the latest issue of Jugs)
since Delia's not in line, you can pass that back on over here...but I only read it for the stories, of course
I'm with you. I like the changes. I don't feel like I'm contributing to the bastard "slip in" in the National Enquirer. And I've been visiting the front page every day I'm here and reading many of the EPs. I like it.
For she's a jolly good fellow

For she's a jolly good fellow

For Judy's a jolly good replacement editor who seems to actually give a damn

Which nobody can deny!

And Jugs magazine is just TACKY. I only read Smithsonian, Boy's Life, and Ass Masturbators Monthly.
Ass Masturbators? We have an ad for that in the bulletin of my church, baby.
Cindy, I find myself actually clicking on cover posts nowadays too. It's a refreshing feeling.

Sweetfeet; WHICH NOBODY CAN DENY! :P

Delia, if I ever make it down that way you need to take me to your church one Sunday. Tell me, do they also have ads for Latex Grrrlz Unleashed?
She's still an alien bent on world conquest!! I have proof!!! PFFFFT!!

That and still, Tink is ignored.

~PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT~ :)
I still avoid the cover and instead, go to www.monkeywankersinsupporthose.com for my viewing needs.

:)
I'm in the Very Impressed Corner with JK. For realz. It has been a lovely change. I'm a hesitater. I hold my breath a lot and wait, but I think it's safe to breathe now... and stand in the VIC corner with the VI people, and eat snacks.
Bastante Bueno! I am so glad for the new posts feed return. Now if she can get rid of that goddamned Pitbulls in Spamalot she will be my hero.
Ass kisser.

Kidding - I TOLD you Judy was fabulous and stunningly beautiful.
nana,
Thanks for putting into words what so many of us have been feeling. Judy walked into a very difficult situation and has handled it with tremendous grace. We have lots to be grateful for here at OS.
I agree! The cover has changed dramatically for the better!
Judy got a bad rap when she first started and went on Christmas vacation, which was undeserved. It's a thankless job; nice to see her getting some appreciation.
And. . .she put Freaky on the cover. Like Zerry.
Tink, www.monkeywankersinsupporthose.com has been hacked by www.armenianchickenchokers.com and now only shows vids of "Teletubby" re-runs. I read about it on www.angrypissinglaotiantransvestites.com

CK, corner-standing (while wearing cool sunglasses naturally) and snack-eating is the only wise in times of uncertainty.

Doc, I've got a standing offer of 400,000,000 drachmas (approx. $7.00) for the head of Pitbulls.

Dennis, Voicegal, Kathy, Ms. Troll: FOR JUDY'S A JOLLY GOOD EDITOR, AND I KNOW SHE'LL PUT ME ON THE COVER FOR THIS POST,

WHICH NOBODY CAN DENY!
I gotta agree wholeheartedly, Nana.
Natalie, I missed your comment up there; my apologies. Of course I was just kissing ass; you've exposed me for the hollow charade I am:(

VR, that seems to be the consensus. I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking so. Judy's doing as good a job as we could ask of anyone.
yes yes yes.....I agree. I really appreciate the New Posts return, and adore meeting new writers on the cover.

But, uhem, what's with putting a stink on Juggs, kids. I'm featured there all of the time. (staggers from the room crying, jugs flopping from side-to-side.)
Ginny, if you had been here I would have qualified my comment with "Present company excepted." I'm just old-fashioned that way:P
Absolutely. Jolly good show!
Gail! It's a great thing ain't it? It goes against all my instincts to praise those in charge of, well, anything, but Judy is doing a really good job.
And thanks to you and the commentors here, it's not a thankless job. Recognition gives extra energy.
Well okay then, your old fashioned respectability respects my juggedness......you are forgiven.

And bless you my son, for you have not sinned in pointing out that shit has improved hereabouts. I, too, am totally digging the fact that we are seeing a better spread. (and stop it! I'm talking about the range of writers featured.........see how you are!)
I guess I'll start looking at the cover now? why not............
"So I've waited, and I've seen, and I've got to say: I'm pretty impressed. "

Amen! Sorry I was so late to the party nana, but, late is better than never. I, too, have noticed this shift and am enjoying it. I hope it continues along this vein.

Cheers to you!
What? You are saying that this will end up as another fine mess the Saloon Pew Phew Crew has lured bloggers into? Oh nanny ho la nla bonnie Ah!
Beautiful.
Edification.
Hay natti no.
No use teapot spout on a your bug pick-nose-thumb. You get sore pinky, toe, nose, and a human heart need to go observe wind blow mountain laurel, Hemlock, Stan, Oak, Walnut, and Sassafras Trees.
Sassafras root bark tea is aromatic. It's medicinal. It's fragrant. It's perfumery.
yeah yeah.
go sip tea.
and congratulations?
for being alive to read.
I would have to agree with you on this one. On every point. Well said.

My favorite Laurel & Hardy scenes are from their war spoof, "Great Guns," very apropos for today's silliness in the Middle East, or any war:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_0EaOO7OFc

Yeah, they're older here and all their 'action' scenes are in the studio, but the mania is the same, and I love the line, "Did you miss any of those things?"
I've unhacked it, it now resembles www.wankyspankyxtcclubgirlsoncandy.com. I'm happy. Teeeheehee!!

I still say, she's an alien and if you want to be devoured by an alien, more power to you, I'm sticking with the unholy demons from sublevel 3, thank you very much!!! PFFFFT!!! (plus look, no pick, back in the old days, this sort of ass kissing would have gotten at least a pick and a week of honorary covers!! PFFFFT!! ;)

*wanders back to the porn that is Friday*
Changes are good.
Well well; look what followed me home. Hey Benjy, sorry my friend, but you're confusing me with your daddy:)
I see you've got your very own performing monkey Nana. Does it do anything besides fling it's own poo?
Hi Drew. As you can see, this is pretty much all it does; it has diarrhea of the mind, the poor thing, and the mental development of a 3rd grader. Its only way of interacting with normal folk is to call them "bitches" or "cunts" if they're women, and "faggots" if they're men. Pathetic I know, but it's not really Benjy's fault. It was raised by noted misogynist and all-around OS creep Lesh the Manly Man, founder of the Ipoh He-Man Woman Hater's Club. Benjy, by the very fact of its existence, is a strong argument for the case that some people shouldn't be allowed to procreate, and a poster-boy for the cultural and familial mechanisms by which mindless hatred survives from one generation to the next.
I see. It was just over at my blog spewing it's spew also. If it wasn't such a foul little thing one could almost feel sorry for it. As you said, social retardation of the kind it's suffering is inflicted in most cases by bad parenting. In 0ther words, Benjamin wasn't necessarily born a filthy-minded little poo flinger; it's Papa taught it to be that way. How sad it must be to be Benjamin.
Yes, but where are the riveting works on masturbation?
Sirenita, most of my posts have been deleted, but there's still Tink's blog.

And Christine; thanks for visiting. I'm clapping too!
