I read a post earlier in which the author, McGarrett50, expressed fears of violence from people who'd been whipped up into a frenzy of bloodlust by Barack Obama. He also claimed to be afraid that crazy, violence-prone left wing bloggers on OS are a threat to democracy. Or to him. Or something. This guy is apparently so afraid of the left, so concerned that his personal safety may be at risk, or maybe just such a coward, that after I left a remark on his post he closed c0mments. I'm just wondering where his pacifist principals were when his fellow travellers, aka the Tea Party movement, were waging a campaign last summer which relied heavily on the implied threat of violence and which was at least partially rooted in white anger at the fact that our country now has a black president. Remember the images of Obama hung in effigy or dressed up as a witch doctor? Remember the signs reading "We Came Unarmed - This Time" ? Remember the people toting AR-15s to public events? I sure as hell do. The blogger I'm discussing who closed comments tonight was apparently fine with that sort of thing, coming as it did from his side of the aisle, but God forbid that people on the left use words implying that we're anything but cowed, latte-drinking, pacifistic adherents of turn-the-other-cheekism. If I wrote a post bleating in outrage everytime I saw a threat in comments from the rightwingnuts in OS, I'd never have time to get anything done. I can guarantee you this though; if I did write such a post, I wouldn't close comments. That's for hypocrites and cowards and, apparently, Republicans.

Hi, I'm Jeff. I'm a Kansas liberal. Pleased to meet you!

Nice Gun too...
I TRY to ignore the fringe elements on both ends of the spectrum.
(By the way did ya know that the term "fringe" used to be a delicate way to refer to pubic hair? Methinks that "fringe element" is a rather apropos term)

At Mc Garrets I left this one which I will post here before he deletes me. I thought it was weak of him to close comments. He started a discussion, then ended it.
Well, I am so flattered, and what a nice discourse of intellectuals you have here. Book 'em Dunno.
Personally (and I DO take it personal) I'm sick of being a pawn in the ponzie scheme we call a government. I'm sick of every bit of productivity being sucked into the black hole of corporate greed, for which our government is the front.
As I noted in my comment that you quoted I am an "aging peace loving hippie type". That I feel the way I do, and as my friend the Cap'n stated that he does, should be taken by those that pull the strings as a warning flag. At some point there will be so many left with nothing that something will have to give. The way I see it, we'll pretty much need to start over.
"My post about Obama's SOTU said that the speech had dangerous elements to it. Specifically, that he challenged the Supreme Court in an inappropriate way."
Obama was inappropriate? I can't help but to laugh at that. I suppose you think it was appropriate for the supreme court to further whore out future "elections" to corporations. If that is inappropriate then I am too (of course that goes without saying in this post).
Yes, I propose that the people destroy the government and start over. I propose that it be done in violence because otherwise it will never get done.
Sad isn't it...

Regardless of their political beliefs, Americans tend to have a basic sense of decency and boundaries.
The conviction of the murderer of Tiller today, by a jury that I am convinced is much, much further to the right than virtually everyone on OS shows that Americans respect the rule of law, due process, and reason.
Personally, I think that the fact that the guy was gunned down in a church made this a 40 minute deliberation. Some things just aren't done. Period. And murdering people in church -- any church -- is way over the line.
I buy the fact that it was just frustration and venting. But, in the internet age, the average guy going off on a bar room rant on line -- that individual has the capability of adding further polarization to an already angry and polarized populace.
R.
I prefer to leave the rest of the wacko comments up because they indict themselves as the wackos they are.
As for our entire government going to shit? yes I fear it has. Capitalism, which has always been an achievement based version of selfishness has morphed into a sort of human populace cancer. It's not healthy for the human race. I read today that the US has just sold Taiwan more than 6 BILLION dollars worth of ARMS to TAWAIN.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/01/29/taiwan.arms/index.html?section=cnn_latest
Sorry, but I don't think we should be in this business. We don't sell food to people and expect them not to eat it. Or cars and expect them not to drive it, I mean WTF?!!!
"I buy the fact that it was just frustration and venting. But, in the internet age, the average guy going off on a bar room rant on line -- that individual has the capability of adding further polarization to an already angry and polarized populace."
That's what I was hoping to do. Think it'll work? But it wasn't a "bar room rant". I was dead sober, and at home.
When someone writes a thread of a highly volatile nature (except for the "I'm angry at the OS ones) and then either closes comments or deletes responses I start to avoid them. They aren't here for a real discussion, just "catapulting the propaganda".
Stupid emotions!!!
:-)
That sould be a frowny, but I'm too lazy to change it!! :D
On a personal note here...I have been a conservative and an independent almost my entire adult life. I listened to the president's state of the union adress and for the first time since I returned from Nam, I found myself believing in a politician again. This President has made me believe in this country again.....bloodlust? No. Maybe a frenzy of hope that just maybe, for once, it won't all just be business as usual.
It broke my heart to listen to this brave man and know that the room he was speaking to was full of people....both democrats and Republicans...who would try their best to make sure that no real progress is made.
But I do still hope....
And no one has ever criticized my outstanding tits, Ablonde. You're right to kick some tit-whacker's ass.
And Cindy, I didn't get past the "puss" and "ill" in my effort to pronounce your outstanding word......just those two together were enough for me.
I think we can all agree here: If you need to delete comments or CLOSE comments means that you are a pussy who shouldn't post here with the grownups who can take responsibility for their opinions. I've taken a few hard ones to the chin, and it never occurred to me to delete them.
Onwards, ever onwards.
People talking about killing Republicans -- it is either a rhetorical device or -- if they are serious -- they are publishing the fact that they are preparing to commit murder.
Mostly people that kill people, they don't do a lot of blogging about it before hand.
So, I assume this is rhetoric. But it is not cool.
The system is broke.... needs fixed. The people will have to do it, as a patriotic people MUST do.
Didn't comment because it reminded me of that whiny transvestite on You Tube crying about Britney Spears.
He's like most any "conservative" ideologue. Fearing the phantom "liberal" Marxist socialist revolution will derail his beloved conservative fascist national socialist revolution.
Another funny- his tag of "liberal fascism" on his post. That's like saying Christian Muslim, Dog Whale or (especially in this case) Conservative Intellectual.
Nanno...Trig...Cap'n...Youth Guyth Juth Quit It!!! Quit being mean to Britney!!
This sad statistic should work in your favor Nana.
Sadly, look at the fucking foreclosure rates all across the country, look at how many of our friends lost their retirement as their 401K's went south. If people continue to lose their homes and the future that they worked for.....who knows what might happen.
(and can you just imagine what would be happening right now if Bush was successfull in "privatizing" Social Security?)
Nana, could you please delete my stupid comments? (including this one?)
FREE!
and i think i'm in love with snippy the grammar dog on so so many levels. so ... many. sorry, kitty.
And thanks all for the reads and the comments. Rest assured that if McGarrett or anyone else comments here in a negative fashion, or if anyone has anything to say against my position, I will not close comments, no matter how much my feelings may be hurt:P
glad you put it up. controversy invites discussion, or some such profound thing.
Rated, nana, cool pic.
And Sirenita; rest assured that no pussies, not even of the metaphorical sort, were harmed in the making of this post. But please find that photo of you with the .38 and the cleavage! It's not solely for salacious purposes that I want to see it; we need to do all we can to dispell this stereotype that everyone on the left are a bunch of arugula-eating pansies.
Bang.

Sad indeed, and even sadder that people can be so pusillanimous as to initiate a discussion then close comments as soon as someone says something which strikes a jarring note.
And Natalie, how could you think I'd be so vain and pretty as to do something like that?
He probably closed his blinds and locked all his doors too.
I've closed comments before when I was tired. Or too busy to respond. I am lazy though.
'Lunatic fringe' used to refer to cutting your hair into bangs, by the way, to the commenter up the way who discussed fringe and pubic hair. I read about 'lunatic fringe' in a Laura Ingalls Wilder book of all things.
I think you guys should thumb wrestle. ;)
I think people who close comments at avoid discussing something ain't bright people.
However, I do believe we the people do have the right to overthrow the gov't and put in a new one. I am damn sick of what I see happening right now.
Love the Evil Assault Weapon. I have an assault musket - Charleville .69 caliber - the muzzle alone of which would scare the bejeebies out of Cheney or his cronies, if necessary.
Alternative pejoratives suggesting impaired manliness without implying consensual mutual physical contact between members (sic) of identical gender: ninny, namby pamby, twit, lollipop, poptart, ball-free wonder. I'm sure there are more, but I'm starting to question my maturity.
Closing comments? Only by Bendan Benchsniffer Bendini and his ilk - if, and only if his unwanted insertions disrupt the flow of a genuinely enjoyable discourse.
Predicting violent overthrow of the gummint? Well then there now, probly not such a cool idea to telegraph punches, I should think. Besides, at some point Gene Hackman and his henchmen will figure out a way to get tracking microchips into our blood via Fruit Loops or good ol' manly red meat or simply drinking water, and that'll be that. The entire United Nations budget will go to the World Bureau of Monitoring and Tracking, which will employ hundreds of thousands of analysts and field agents until the technology reaches a level wherein the monitor/analyst simply left-clicks on a mouse and the aberrant chip, which is blinking rapidly as it emits seditious signals, will respond by instantly lobotomizing its host. (jayzuz, it's probly just as well I went to bed early last nite. If I had written this then, I'd've been unable to sleep the sleep that knits up the raveled sleeve of sheer unmitigated terror.)
McGarrett? What a hoot. McGarrett had the biggest balls on TV, as I recall. Musta shrunk considerably with age.
Is it too late to rate? Ahh, fuckit: (r)
Yes, Cindy, you do. By the way, what are you doing in this sty?
Man, I missed a great party is seemed, I passed out around midnight, man the next door lady has the best booze that she spikes with lots of love, love equaling LSD.
By the way, did you all know that you're dolphins trapped in the San Diego zoo?
I didn't either. Man, talked about the Matrix.
Anyways, free your mind, snort Draino

But it has a forum element to it also.
I am tired of people who delete...or who close comments.
Thanks for the post.
Oh. Hang on...
Okay. I've got my gun, too.
Now then, I agree with the closing comments sentiment, but pussies everywhere are going to be offended. Pussies have feelings too, ya know.
But closing comments and then posting elsewhere is a bit sneaky-pants. Sneaky-pants. Is that a demoralizing nickname or what?
In my opinion they are just people too, and people can make bad decisions and on purpose. I support his challenge of them!!! Call those assholes out for abusing their power. Did I spell their right? Judges are not dieties, they are prone to corruption just like mortal men. Some are honest and some are hypocrites that send people to jail for the same shit they do, and the judge gets away with it. I know this from personal experiance and stories from friends and aquaintenances. Thank God Mr. Obama has the balls to do something this bold. It shows he cares at least a little about what is right and just. Judges will abuse their power.!!!!
Thats the fact Jack!!!!!!
There's a site called TWOP and it's about TV shows and there are these "moderators" that just treat one guilty of going topic as if they had just bombed a federal buildings.
But, some people are that way , and the best we can do is search out less uptight souls.
I am not convinced that non-violence is the answer. It seems to me that the violent-prone wingnuts need to know that their force will be met with force.
Would non-violence have worked in the Civil War?
Sometimes, it seems to me, you have to kick some ass.
Hopefully, their just knowing that you are willing to kick some ass will keep the wingnuts from even starting something.
The claim that progressives are prone to violence is bullshit. It's the wingnuts who like to bring deadly weapons to presidential appearances, not vice-versa, and it's the "tea party" dipshits who rabidly support the NRA.
However, the right would just LOVE to disarm the left.
I'm all for the Second Amendment, because we sane Americans just might have to bear arms against the wingnuts.
And the world needs to start seeing more leftists, like Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who are willing to kick ass if need be. No one respects someone who won't fight back if aggressed upon.
Anyway, I wouldn't close comments unless they were totally getting out of hand. I do delete individual comments as necessary, though. (I recently posted a piece about when it's appropriate to delete blog comments.)

Thanks for the comment Robert, and for getting my point here. I wrote this post in response to McGarrett50 whining about "scary" language from the left, as if that sort of language isn't the lingua franca of rightists in this country. And I included the photo of myself with my rifle in reply to this comment by noted white wringer John Knight on a post about the Trijicon Jesus rifles:
"I will, like, totally never buy a Trijicon sight mounted gun ever. Well, I don't own a gun. I hate guns. So, um, I will totally boycott Trijicon anyway. I will pretend I am some backwoods gun-loving hick and then I will totally become an enlightened, elitist, dark-frame glasses wearing, coffee drinking, obnoxious, liberal who will never buy a Trijicon gun sight for any of my non-existent guns.

As you can see, Mr. Knight's perception of the left is as cartoonish and divorced from reality as most of his views. Like many of his ilk, he operates under the delusion that only Teabaggers and their friends in the white supremacist movement and etc. are the only ones who are ready to fight for their vision of America. Over and over in OS, I've seen comments from nutjobs saying things like "You better listen to us, we're coming for you next" or "Have you ever considered the fact that most of us have guns?" Yeah, they have guns, but they aren't the only ones who do, nor should they be. That's why McGarrett's post struck me as so hypocritical, and when he closed comments, as so cowardly. Threats, implicit or overt, from the right are OK I guess, but when they're answered by people on the left, it suddenly becomes "terror" or "hate speech." What a bunch of sanctimonious, mealy-mouthed pussies the righties are when it's all said and done.
And thanks again to everybody who read and commented here. It's good to here from all of you, though I'm still wishing McGarrett or Gordon O or one of the other hypocritical voices for rightist hysteria come by and say hi.

For the record, I did not call for violent upheaval in my post. I MAY have engaged in some hyperbole in comments. I did call for trials for Treason and subsequent executions as ordered by a court of law. I guess the right only favors execution for poor folk. What a surprise.
That said, I DO APOLOGIZE TO MCGARRETT FOR CALLING HIM A CHICKEN SHIT. It was a slanderous disservice to defecating chickens everywhere.
And to your buddy, The Oldest Osmond Brother, it's pretty chickenshit to run off to Brazil and then lob grenades back. Oops, sorry again, chickens.
What kind of pussy is afraid of a loud-mouthed party pirate anyway?
Too bad hypocrisy isn't illegal. If it were, I'd so enjoy hearing
'BOOK 'EM, DANNO!'
Yeah, Carroway Seed? Where was that respect for the rule of law when those on the right were plotting that murder? It didn't come out of a vacuum, it came for the same hyperbole from the right that you now condemn for the left.
There's that effing hypocrisy again.
Cappy, lips that touch arugula shall never touch mine, and don't even get me started on bok choy.
Alison, if there's anybody who could disarm me with their singing, it'd be you!
Drew; fuck diplomacy. It takes two parties being interested in a solution for diplomacy to work. If it seemed like the right was the slightest bit interested in dialogue rather than continual confrontation, I'd be all for it. The thing is though, we've already gone down that road, and look where it's gotten us. If I have t0 listen to another braindead Teabagger type squealing "I want my country back!" as they work with all their might against everything democracy stands for, I'm going to vomit. The right makes funny noises about the "Marxism threat" from the left, when the plain truth is that most of those cretins wouldn't know what a Marxist was if one crawled up their ass and fucking died.
And, Gandhi gained independence for India from the militarily elite England without lifting arms. I feel that takes much more courage than pointing back. Just my $.02.
Wow...I saw this in the feed. Didn't realize this was so old! Ha! See I'll chase you around anywhere! ;)
