The Fully Rounded Woman -- Chick Lit Edition

Rate: 4 Flag

2Great article in the Guardian:

""Chick lit" has relied for years on repetitive plot lines with heroines who agonise about their weight as they swig chardonnay, smoke cigarettes and have sex with their boss.

But the latest publishing phenomenon to sweep America, which has just arrived over here, features a new heroine: the young woman who is seriously overweight – and doesn't care."

It's about time.

A slew of books in which the protagonist is not just "curvy" or "voluptuous" but is actually "fat" are about to hit the bookshops. As well as The Pi**ed Off Parents Club, there is The Wife's Tale by Lori Lansens, bestselling author of The Girls, which was the Richard & Judy Best Read of the Year in 2006 and a finalist for the Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction.

"It's classic wish-fulfilment: readers want to read about women learning to love themselves whatever their weight, because then they don't have to go through that pesky world of dieting themselves. There's a big market of people who want to hear that message," said Julia Llewellyn, author of Love Nest, to be published in February by Penguin, in which one of the central characters is overweight.

Especially because what people call dieting simply doesn't work well. Get happy, be fat or get happy and you get thin, but "get thin, get happy" not so much.
I wonder if these heroines will have high blood pressure, diabetes or any of the other diseases that obesity is a risk factor for.
Oh puh-leaze. You cannot be serious. Sheesh. What a world.
I'm pandering to my public here.

It was this or something on an obscure German Social Theorist.

Plus, anything but anorexia. I like super models as much as the next guy, but reading about their weight problems, not so much.
For the life of me I can't imagine someone thinking these skinny-ass runway models are gorgeous. Normal people do not look like that and don't want to look look that. If I wanted a woman that skinny I'd find a heroin addict to live with!
R~
Excellent point, scanner.

I love CK Obsession. The real question is who is obsessed. Probably not most men.

Myself, I think glasses can be very hot on a woman. Sort of like a woman with her hair up. When they unpin it, it's can be very hot. For me, the image of removing a woman's glasses prior to ....
uber hot. So, don't go getting lasik surgery for my benefit.
Nick, I do sincerely apologize. My continuing saga of my slow but sure starvation must have disturbed you. I could not help it. My Ronzoni only arrived yesterday. ;)

I am running to my optician's office now. I just stomped on my only pair of glasses. I will wear contacts from now on. ;)

Hope
Nick, I would ask you to please stop this. Chick Lit is my area on OS. Please get off my stage. Now. ;)

Thank you.

Hope
Hope, my sweet. You might want to rethink that starving metaphor. Listen to the song, Petting Zoo. http://open.salon.com/blog/nick_carraway/2009/10/10/all_time_best_career_move_--_writer_to_singersongwriter

Listen to the lyrics. They are stunning.
Hmmm...what Natalie said.

And as far as scanner's observation--not all "skinny" girls are heroin addicts (or suffer from eating disorders). It seems like society has created whole new bias in their efforts to make overweight people feel more accepted.
I'm just saying...

;-)
Nick, what are you waiting for? I have done everything but e-mail you the directions. Come and get me!

I listened to the song and thought of nothing but you. If your heart is still beating after reading this, then get in your car and drive.

I'll see you tonight. I'll be wearing my best, itsy bitsy dress.

Hope
XOXOXO
Wait. I'm sorry but since when are so-called "fat" girls not capable of being healthy? And being overweight doesn't automatically translate to obesity. Why is that skinny - or skinnier people - think they're so much healthier? Newsflash - they aren't. And it's very possible for a woman to be curvy, "fat" (if that's what you must call it), overweight, or whatever adjective you'd use, and be beautiful AND healthy.
It IS about time this heroine came along. Just like Ugly Betty, maybe it's time for a Fat Betty.
Walk Away.
Thanks for posting.
Thank god this is a feminist issue and I am just an innocent bystander.

I know what I like and I'm not saying anymore.
Ok, so after reading Natalie, Unbreakable, scanner and Walk Away's comments, this is how I feel now:

Why does one type of person have to be ridiculed to make another type feel better?

And Walk Away--you're right too.

:-)
