It's a victory. I suppose it isn't as satisfying as one in which you kill millions of civilians through strategic bombing campaigns. We firebombed and nuked their cities to end WW II. And in the process, ended up destroying most of the world's industrial capacity excluding the US and USSR. Unfortunately, we didn't knock out any significant global industrial capacity this time, so we will need to move from guns to butter.
1. Demobilize. Lets cut back our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan ASAP to the minimum number needed to bomb the shit out of them if they get out of line again.
2. Restore basic American Civil Liberties. Like walking through an airport like a Citizen instead of a Felon. Repeal the Patriot Act.
3. No more blank checks. The counter terror establishment is now simply another bureaucracy. Feed it like we feed highway safety programs and natural catastrophe responses. The trough is closed -- time for them to man up and fight for funding like everyone else.
4. Save the military for wars that can be won by killing the enemy. Send the fucking peace corps in for nation building, if anyone really cares.
5. Make NATO put up or shut up. They have been free riders for 50 years. Time for them to pay their own way or quit pretending to be global powers.
6. Restructure the military. Downsize them. Less jets, more drones. Fewer tanks, more robots. Less money. A lot less. But more Seal 6 units. Special Ops, Drones, Robots. Automate and downsize. And don't forget to thank them.
7. While we are at it, Pakistan can hand over the remaining al-Qaeda members still hiding out there or expect consequences. Bad ones. Like giving India a green light to deal with the Mumbi incident.
And for God's Sake -- Quit Apologizing.
The total death toll was equivalent to a bad week or two during WWII. We didn't do strategic bombing. We didn't nuke Mecca.
In fact, we didn't do anything remotely as extreme as the public watched weekly in the fantasy series 24.
Coffee is for closers. War Crime Trials are for losers. Let it go.
Number of Americans Killed on American Soil by Terror Attacks After 9/11:

The public has a firm grasp on the big picture. They started it. They are defeated. We won.
10 years ago, people weren't so sure it would turn out this way.
And don't forget that Saddam was systematically killing large chunks of his population, so the net additional deaths caused by US involvement is a mere fraction of that figure.
But, Iraq was stupid. A mistake. We are sorry about that.
And, to clarify, Bin Laden death was @ app 1:00 am, local time on May 2. There is an 8 hour time difference between Washington DC and Pakistan.
