Never eat at a place called Moms.

Never play cards with a man named Doc.

Never sleep with a woman whose troubles are worse than your own.

Nelson Algren
A Walk on the Wild Side

 Version 1:

The phone rang.

This is the Jackson County Sheriff's office.

Do you know X?

"Yes"

I'm sorry to inform you that she's no longer err with us.  We found her body in a room in the Weston.  The paramedics couldn't revive her.

"No. Shit.  God."

I'm so sorry for your loss.  Would you help us identify the body?

"I don't really know.  I don't..."

Look, we don't care about the drugs.  Not today.  You may not want to be involved, but you are already involved.  She called this number 7 hours ago. Her last call.

Her parents are flying in, but its time to man up, buddy.

Time to man up.

"Err, OK"

I'll send a car over.  Today you are doing us, me, a favor.  Of course we want a name.  Be ready.  15 minutes.

Don't fuck with us on this.

Version 2 - 7 Hours Earlier:

The phone rang.   It was X.  X was buzzed.

Hey.   Howsit going?

Listen, can you come over?  I've got Vocodin.  I've got beer.  I'm scared.  I need someone to hold me.  Please?

"You know, this really isn't... you know ... it just..."

Ha, yea.  Of course it isn't a good time.  It isn't a good idea either.  I'm asking as a friend.  A favor.  Please?  Come for me.

Last month, when we did it.  You know I did it for you.  Because we are friends.  I'm not saying it was mercy sex.  Just, well, you know.  It wasn't love.  You were such a mess.  I mean, it was good.  Of course, it was good.  But, well.  Please.

Come for me.  Please.

Thanks.  You are a sweetie.  Thank you,

I am testing out embedding a song.

The music was selected to enhance the text.

Seems to work, although I have to load twice.
one thing i learned from an old post about embedding is that if there are javascript commands in the embed code, OS will strip it out upon your trying to "save and preview" the post. which *finally* explains why a lot of the mp3 players i was trying to use didn't work. in case that's helpful ...

oh, and this music played just fine when i eventually (!!!) got your post to load, though it is on autoplay, which i personally don't like. but hey, it's your blog, nick. :)
Candace:

Thanks for the tip. One day my old embedded stuff just stopped working.

This seems to work though.

As far as auto play -- I just added a warning on top. I am personally enamored with the idea of text+music. However, unfortunately it isn't perfected yet.
mercy sex? love? affectionate friendship? loving friendship?
f-buddy interventions? etc etc

whatever u call it it
is an act of humanity.
an act of mercy.
it is maybe
also
along with the pleasure
for u

a lifesaving event.
a ...shall we dare say...a...resurrection-beforehand?
Love this post and the way it works.
Really enjoyed this Nick. Your writing has been especially stellar of late. Sorry I am just catching up. Loved the songs as you know I love the addition of music, it reveals so much about the writer to me.
I missed this excellent post until you linked it again, Nick.

Thanks especially for the Cat Power song, which I never heard before, although I have most of her music on one playlist or another.
