Urbanized - Film Review

Rate: 4 Flag

Gary Hustwit, Producer of the documentary, Helvetica, and Objectified,  released his latest documentry film, Urbanized, this fall.

World cities are growing at warp speed. And urbanization isn't waiting for design professionals. It will happen. Which makes attempts to incorporate enlightened design essential.

Although the film is overly ambitious, including a brief history of urban planning beginning in the 19th century, it manages to leave the viewer craving more.

Although presented from a Eurocentric viewpoint, its most interesting material is global.

Americans who lust for the high speed rail of Japan or China should check out the Bogota bike path network .

And mass transit advocates should examine the TransMilenio bus based transit system. It is designed much like a modern subway system, but uses much less expensive above ground busses traveling on dedicated, above ground roads.

Unfortunately the film isn't in general distribution, but does have scheduled showings in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, and Washington.

Interesting...as always. Thanks, Nick!
well, that is on my list of shit to miss, man.

eurocentricity is something i abhor in a man,
love in a gal.

damn europeans with their haughty fuckin attitude,
i wanna go over there and maybe piss
in the street in paris, just to show em.

as fer cities, fuck them good and hard, up the b hole.

who needs em? suburbia is where tis at.

also i love the woods.

animals in the night talkin to me.

maine, man!
tai ... back at you.

James:

Never one to pull any punches. The suburbs will kill you. Bore you to death.

Same with nature. At its perfect best, yea. But 99% of the time it is too damn hot or cold or bugs or what not.
buddy, i gotta disagree with you about

1.suburbs ...they are much more interesting than they used to be
back in the 80's, when all there was to do was get high and listen to zeppelin and eat junk food. there are minorities here now. some of them are quite engaging and pleasant.

2.nature. if you got some woods, and some pot, and some emerson, you are set, baby. bugs i keep at bay by smoking. cigarettes.
Urbanized sounds like it hit the spot. Thanks for this.
