HELPFUL SUGGESTION: if you like what you've read (and even if you didn't), come back in a day or two. It'll be better. In fact, if you hated it, you must come back and read it again because it will definitely be better. *************************** "I find that I am so excited I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. HERSHEY'S ALMOND JOY COOKIES are THE DEVIL

Rate: 3 Flag

I was browsing through my favorite discount stores looking for what seems to be in short supply today - soy sauce.  I recall that there were gallons of soy sauced stacked up in one of these stores just last week, but today there is only one bottle and it is small and of a brand I have never heard.  I assume the name is a clever Chinese import nom de native.  I place it in my cart along side my other treasures and move along.

I continue browsing with interest because being on a strict budget it is in these stores I find some fun and surprising edibles at outrageously affordable prices.  As an example, beside the soy sauce is a lovely jar of chutney made with Fenugreek (I have no idea what that is, btw) and next to that a jar of pesto from Italy - both less than $3.  I am feeling good.  I am the huntress and I am triumphing against the odds.

I smoothy weave around the corner to the cookie aisle and there before me stands temptation wrapped in a miracle: Almond Joy cookies. A box with many of them inside.  For one dollar and fifty cents.  !!!!!

I can afford this!   Even on a strict budget, I quickly calculate, this is within my means.   I am not thinking any more as I reach and take and place them in my cart.  Nomatter that they are rife with high fructose corn syrup and that each and every one of them will settle on my already beleagured hips and suffering nethers. These things I have not a single thought of.

I sit now, shamelessly licking the chocolate from my fingers as I type this confession.  I am contrite yet not sufficiently so to dump the remainder.  I know I will eat every last one of them.  And if I die tonight, I will die with the intoxicating taste of coconut and chocolate on my lips.

and I LIKE it.

Freaky, if I could, I would too.
ahh, life is good ...
As a Registered Dietitian, I believe all foods when consumed in moderation can be included in a diet without serious health consequences. The issue is how many different definitions of 'moderation' there is in this country. That being said, I wouldn't beat yourself up so much about eating a cookie laced with high fructose corn syrup as a single ingredient cannot be blamed for the with weight gain and obesity as well as the plethora of diseases associated with it.

While HFCS has a complicated-sounding name, it’s nutritional breakdown is virtually the same as any other sugar found in foods, containing the same number of calories and similar sweetness as table sugar and honey. Furthermore, like table sugar and honey, high fructose corn syrup contains no artificial or synthetic ingredients or color additives. So, if your goal is to slim down or avoid weight gain, simply be aware of the portions of all sugars and calories and keep moving.

Thank you Kim.

I will try to keep that in mind. :)
