Instead of allowing my usual complaints and dissatisfactions to drum my mood like November drizzle, I'm using this exercise to find the bright spots already in my life.
I’m thankful I have a body that continues to function, a mind that continues to grow, and the space and time to explore all they can do.
I’m thankful I have children I’m proud of, who love me and are part of my life. The memories of the girl and boys they were are made richer by the glimpses of the fine and strong adults they’re becoming.
I’m thankful I have a sister and brother who are reminders of the childhood I had, the girl I was, and the parents who are no longer here. I’m thankful for the laughter in our three-way phone calls and for the unconditional love they both offer.
I’m thankful for my extended family - the cousins and aunts who offer support and friendship and have been touchstones throughout my life.
I’m thankful to have friends who join me in all of life’s adventures – the old friends who know where I’ve been and the new friends who help me see where I’m going.
I’m thankful for a space of my own – the hardwood floors that creak as I pace, the garden that invites me outside in the summer, and the way it has come to feel like home.
I’m thankful for a job that is fun, fulfilling, and challenging, with benefits that go beyond money and health insurance - for the staff I’m proud to be a member of, with colleagues I’m happy to call friends.
I’m thankful to have enough food to feed myself, and people who share my love of cooking and eating.
I’m thankful for the purring cat across my lap.
I’m thankful for the winter darkness that makes me appreciate the caress of spring breezes, the warmth of the summer sun, and the crunch of autumn leaves when they come.
I’m thankful for the Thanksgiving Day ahead, free of the pressure to please ex-in laws, full of possibilities, with the sweet promise of dessert with my kids at the end.
I’m thankful for the connection and inspiration I’ve found in the words you all share, and the chance to share my own.
Happy Thanksgiving!
