Oh, dear. Joe Klein is mad at Glenn Greenwald (again):
And so on. Nothing new or particularly surprising there. Klein has been yelling at Greenwald ever since Glenn caught him with his trousers down on the issue of the FISA Bill. Old news.
But then, in the comment section, juniusredivivu strikes:
Here endeth the lesson.
For the past several years, Greenwald has conducted a persistent, malicious campaign to distort who I am and where I stand. He is a mean-spirited, graceless bully. During that time, I have never seen him write a positive sentence about the US military, which has transformed itself dramatically for the better since Rumsfeld's departure (indeed, he ridiculed me when I reported that the situation in Anbar Province was turning around in 2007). I have never seen him acknowledge that the work of the clandestine service—performed disgracefully by the CIA during the early Bush years—is an absolute necessity in a world where terrorists have the capability to attack us at any time, in almost any place. Nor have I seen [him] acknowledge that such a threat exists, nor make a single positive suggestion about how to confront that threat in ways that might conform to his views. Therefore, I have seen no evidence that he cares one whit about the national security of the United States. It is not hyperbole, it is a fact.
I am not a religious reader of Greenwald--he does go on, and on--and it's possible that I missed extensive posts in which he praises the Armed Forces or makes positive suggestions about how to track possible communications between terrorists abroad and their confederates here. But I sort of doubt that. What I have seen from him, ad nauseum, are intemperate attacks in which he questions the character of--no, it's worse than that: he slimes--anyone who has the temerity to disagree with him.
And so on. Nothing new or particularly surprising there. Klein has been yelling at Greenwald ever since Glenn caught him with his trousers down on the issue of the FISA Bill. Old news.
But then, in the comment section, juniusredivivu strikes:
The reading today is from the Book of Klein, chapter 73, beginning at the 13th verse:
.
And there were those who muttered against Klein, for there was discontent in the Land of Bafflegab, and the Centrists were discomforted. And there arose a mighty man of valor, that was named Greenwald. And around him were acolytes, many and pathetic, and they did say many unkind things, even unto publishing alarmingly accurate reports of things said at picnics, which did mightily enrage Klein, so that the blood rushed to his head and the steam out of his ears. And Klein took up his word-processor to smite them. Vast was the word-processor, of sounding brass and luminous silicon, and the length of it was seven bull-sh*ts, and the width of it was three. And the prophet Hoekstra blessed Klein and anointed him with his own manly juicings, and Klein went forth to battle. And as he issued from the Gate of Broder, through which a camel may not fit, the face of Klein was terrible, and his chariots numberless as the secret WMD sites of Iraq. And Klein came down unto the Plain of Fisa, and confronted Greenwald, who was a stripling youth, armed only with a sling.....
Here endeth the lesson.

But that doesn't mean he's perfect, and Klein has a point. It's true that GG plays the peanut gallery and doesn't seem all that interested in solutions. It's not necessarily his job and all that, but it's worth mentioning because solutions are never without compromise. And GG doesn't compromise.
I also happen to think Greenwald's thin-skinned, but I'm OK with that.
And thanks for linking to the post where Glenn spanks Klein. That one was a classic, and it was nice to be reminded of it.
Hey, nice post!
Nevertheless, Klein's whiny complaints are telling: Greenwald is MEAN! What a meanie! I think Greenwald is pretty civil. Why should his criticisms effect anyone? Either they hold water or they don't. If they don't, then it doesn't matter. Klein should grow a thicker skin or rethink his politics (although he claims not to have any. After all, he's a neutral, objective, unbiased journalist.)
if there were no cia, there is a lively chance no one would have wanted to make it happen.
the chief charm of the cia seems to be as a podium from which klein and many others cry "the terrorists will getcha!"
well, it's a living, let him do it, in some sheltered workshop.
GG is a blogger, not a policy maker or elected official working on legislation. He doesn't compromise because it isn't required of him in his role. We NEED uncompromising voices.
Also, beautiful writing on your part. Thanks!
somebody said something about Greenwald being uncompromising. He has written recently about the difference between needing to compromise in the context of legislation and civil rights. I had not given that much thought.
Carol: What about civil rights legislation?
Lainey, don' t you go dissin' my Glenn! I happen to think he is practically perfect in every way. He is the best journalist I can think of, though he doesn't claim to be one. He's far more thoughtful, integritous and trustworthy than any corporate journalist.
Did you like my coined word? GG deserves nothing less than an adjective meaning "full of integrity."
Rated for Glenn Greenwald!
Personally, I think Klein let the cat out of the bag right here:
"I am not a religious reader of Greenwald--he does go on, and on--and it's possible that I missed extensive posts in which he praises the Armed Forces or makes positive suggestions about how to track possible communications between terrorists abroad and their confederates here. But I sort of doubt that."
In other words: I don't usually read his stuff, but I'm now going to attack him for something I assume he never said!
That is precisely the kind of sloppy work Greenwald caught Klein doing on the FISA Bill - a bill he claimed 1) He was right about; 2) He may have been a little bit wrong about, but he didn't have the time or the knowledge to find that out; and 3) He was lied into misrepresenting it by evil anonymous sources.
Klein has his moments, but he also does some shockingly bad work at times. And he suffers from what I perceive to be quite common among famous reporters: They hate it when other people report on them. He could get out of it by simply owning up to his mistakes and correcting them, but his ego gets in the way.
As for Greenwald: Yes, he too is a bit prickly, but he manages to keep his cool and stick to the facts, which is always a winning strategy. And he really is a "civil liberties extremist". But you can't have too many of those. There are some things which should not be open for debate or compromise. "Slavery - is it right or wrong, or should we practice a middle-of-the-road solution?" No, I think not.
By the way: Greenwald compliments the troops regularly. But as this is not the purpose of his blog, he does not devote as much time to it as hero-worshippers like Klein.
As for juniusredivivu, I am simply in awe.
