My Mom is an "old lady with a dog". She found Speck under her car two days after Hurricane Katrina hit Miami. She named her Speck because she was just a Speck, a handful, of a dog. This pup rejuvenated her, and has brought her much joy. I, too, love this creature beyond reason.
My Mom would tell her days in advance that I was coming to visit. Speck would be in a complete frenzy by the time I arrived. She'd tear around the apartment at light speed, then land on my suitcase that was full to bursting with dog toys that she dutifully played with (or destroyed) during my entire stay.
This being a Class A Spoiled Dog, she tends to get jealous when my Mom spends too much time on the phone, and she begins barking for attention. My Mom and I developed an extremely odd, yet effective, way of ending these little tantrums. With the speaker placed near the floor, I begin "speaking" to her in Dog (okay, I bark), alternating with my lovingest "whodamostpreciousestpuppyindawholeworld" voice - not to be used in polite company. This not only quiets her but sends her little rump a-wagging. We did this just a few days ago and Speck licked the receiver!
There are a great many dog owners on OS (Basetty Butts!!!). I'm sure I'll get plenty of back up when I say she knows EXACTLY who she's talking to, that when I visited she knew it was me when she heard the elevator "bing" when it open on her floor, and that like any child, she knew there were goodies in my suitcase.
Dogs is smart!!

I miss dog-He was a high breed yellow lab, 2yrs old, stood to my hips on all four and at 85lbs if not more. He was my fishing traveling buddy. Dogs are such great company. Maybe I should get another one..soon.maybe..
Great post! Enjoyed it.
Yes, Ablonde, that does KNOWS she can weasel pretty much anything out of me!
Fire, my Mom keeps reminding me that "Dogs are a lot of work", but I always answer, "You keep telling me to work at what I love." A pup will soon become a must in my house. Unconditional love.
Hi, GoshDarnIt! Nice to meet you, and am most pleased you enjoyed my little caption. I was especially proud of that. I'm rushing to your blog to see a better picture of that cat!
WAH - You're just like me. Smooshing dog's faces is great fun. And yes, you're absolutely right. She OWNS me. Love to Bumpers and the gang!
Dharma - is there a place where I might see a photo of the fabulously named "Trotsky"?
Rated for puppy cuteness.
I get to spend every Tuesday night in the company of many dogs doing paper work at an obedience club in exchange for free lessons for the Rambunctious Poodle. I'm a total fool for every one that comes through the door - every dog, that is.
Little dogs are like that. I know how that was when I had my little Olive. Boy, she followed me everywhere and loved to play with my shoes.
"dog is god spelled backwards"---we weren't allowed as kids to say that sentence. we were Catholic and my mother felt it was wrong to make a play on words with God.
Wouldn't it be funny if God was a dog??
