It was hopeless. I GAVE my heart away.

My Mom is an "old lady with a dog".  She found Speck under her car two days after Hurricane Katrina hit Miami.  She named her Speck because she was just a Speck, a handful, of a dog.  This pup rejuvenated her, and has brought her much joy.  I, too, love this creature beyond reason.

My Mom would tell her days in advance that I was coming to visit. Speck would be in a complete frenzy by the time I arrived.  She'd tear around the apartment at light speed, then land on my suitcase that was full to bursting with dog toys that she dutifully played with (or destroyed) during my entire stay.

This being a Class A Spoiled Dog, she tends to get jealous when my Mom spends too much time on the phone, and she begins barking for attention.  My Mom and I developed an extremely odd, yet effective, way of ending these little tantrums.  With the speaker placed near the floor, I begin "speaking" to her in Dog (okay, I bark), alternating with my lovingest "whodamostpreciousestpuppyindawholeworld" voice - not to be used in polite company.  This not only quiets her but sends her little rump a-wagging.  We did this just a few days ago and Speck licked the receiver!

There are a great many dog owners on OS (Basetty Butts!!!).  I'm sure I'll get plenty of back up when I say she knows EXACTLY who she's talking to, that when I visited she knew it was me when she heard the elevator "bing" when it open on her floor, and that like any child, she knew there were goodies in my suitcase.

Dogs is smart!!

She looks like she could be related to my little guy. Mighty Joe Young is now 6 mos. old and is supposed to be 1/2 chihuahua, 1/2 fox terrier but he's looking more and more like a toy fox terrier. You can see his pictures on my blog entitled: I quit my job so I could raise my puppy. He's at my feet right now - I dreamt of a gentle spaniel but ended up with a bossy little terrier who has stolen my heart. Love Speck!
This dog has very knowing eyes.
What an adorable dog and adorable photos. Cute story and very nicely told. Yes dog are smart and they know. My dad's dogs know when I walk in the door, it is all dogs and me to the wall. It makes you feel so loved.
I miss dog-He was a high breed yellow lab, 2yrs old, stood to my hips on all four and at 85lbs if not more. He was my fishing traveling buddy. Dogs are such great company. Maybe I should get another one..soon.maybe..
Great post! Enjoyed it.
LOL @ silence of the lamb..too funny
Precious, precious. Speck and my Trotsky would get along just fine!
EVERYBODY! Go read Deborah's piece about Mighty Joe Young. A wonderful dog story!

Yes, Ablonde, that does KNOWS she can weasel pretty much anything out of me!

Fire, my Mom keeps reminding me that "Dogs are a lot of work", but I always answer, "You keep telling me to work at what I love." A pup will soon become a must in my house. Unconditional love.

Hi, GoshDarnIt! Nice to meet you, and am most pleased you enjoyed my little caption. I was especially proud of that. I'm rushing to your blog to see a better picture of that cat!

WAH - You're just like me. Smooshing dog's faces is great fun. And yes, you're absolutely right. She OWNS me. Love to Bumpers and the gang!

Dharma - is there a place where I might see a photo of the fabulously named "Trotsky"?
The cutest-ever doggie pics! She is adorable.
PUPPY!!! Puppy puppy puppy puppy puppy! What a cute little munchkin she is.

Rated for puppy cuteness.
She is ADORABLE and so lucky that your mom adopted her. She looks like she could be the sister to my dog, Mr. Big. Have you determined her breed?
Speck is a little chihuahua, a little terrier, and a lot Satan if Satan were a licky pup. Where might I see a picture of Mr. Big?
She doesn't LOOK little. She looks adorable. I think there might have been some sort of weird psychic unsaid open call about dogs. This is 4 so far!
What an elegant-looking dog as she's relaxing on your pillow! She is truly adorable. No one can blame you for falling so hard. Those eyes, those whiskers--just darling.
Great looking family and great looking dog. Did you know that if you just mention Dog on OS, you get 3000 hits. amazing (only kidding)
Oy, I can relate. My mom is an old lady with three dogs!
Why is it we talk to dogs in baby talk??? I love pet posts and that is one spoiled poochy, right there. My sister's basset is the same way when I visit and I'm the only one he does it with. He gets so excited and can't stop barking for ten minutes after I arrive. It's good to be loved!
The clone-dog of my dog Opie! The ex and I parted ways some 15 years ago and the only thing I miss is my dog. She could have the house, car and all the furnishings but I thought it best that the little guy stay where he was comfortable. I think he shite in one shoe too many and was never heard from again...typical...
I'll rate anything about a dog - just another old lady with dogs.

I get to spend every Tuesday night in the company of many dogs doing paper work at an obedience club in exchange for free lessons for the Rambunctious Poodle. I'm a total fool for every one that comes through the door - every dog, that is.
That is a very cute dog!
Man, is there anything else you can do not to use your wrist to write with?? I can't even imagine the pain. Isn't there a voice activated software for you to put your words down? Or is that too Star Trekkie??

Little dogs are like that. I know how that was when I had my little Olive. Boy, she followed me everywhere and loved to play with my shoes.

"dog is god spelled backwards"---we weren't allowed as kids to say that sentence. we were Catholic and my mother felt it was wrong to make a play on words with God.

Wouldn't it be funny if God was a dog??
And haven't you wondered why dog is god spelled backwards? I have. Awesome dog! Awesome story!
Oh my god, she's so adorable. You're making me like little dogs. Of course you have a special way of speaking to her. That's how you love an animal. I have a high-pitched call for my cats that shatters glass but it brings them in the house. I hold them and speak sentences to people on their behalf, and people actually look at the cat and answer back. They always know when we're talking to them.
This dog clearly has you wrapped around her little tiny toe. I LOVE that photo from behind her, patiently (pretending she's) listening. And of course, if you rescue a dog; he/she will love you with a loyalty no human can touch, until the end of his/her days.
Great pics, great love story.
"dog is god spelled backwards"--perfect tag. I loved this. :)
