June 26th, 2009

The City Prevails

1 Storm

The Storm begins moving in from the Southwest of New Jersey

2 Storm

The Storm makes it way east over New Jersey towards the Hudson

3A Storm

 Clouds loom over Manhattan

4 Storm

  TheVerrazano Bridge is threatened

5 The Rain Wall Approaches from the Southwest

The Rain Wall Approaches.  It has a Sound

6 The Rain Wall Gets Closer

The Rain Wall gets closer.  I'm a bit unnerved.

7 The Rain Wall is Here and is accompanied by Thunder and Lightning

The Rain Wall is here, accompained by Thunder and Lightning.

Very, very frightening.

8 Too Chicken to go all the way out on my balcony because of fear of electrocution

Finding the concept of electrocution distasteful, this is as far as I would go out on my balcony.  Manhattan is somewhere out there.

Taking My Life in My Hands to show NYC engulfed by Rain Wall

Taking my life in myhands for the edification of my fellow OSers, I manage to get a shot of Manhattan under siege.

9 The Aftermath

As quickly as it began, the storm ended, leaving behind a gorgeous sky, the scent of cleansed air, and a deep sense of gratiude that living 28 floors in the sky affords me this kind of experience.

I HAD TO UPDATE THIS POST BECAUSE THIS BIG MUTHA OF A STORM BLEW IN REALLY FAST, AND I'M TELLING YOU, IT'S HUGE!

Brings back memories of growing up in Clifton - not to far to your west I would imagine...
Urg - that's not TOO far...
Hey, we had one of those early this morning. Don't you love a good summer storm?!
Lovely, Notes. Just beautiful. I love a good summer storm, especially when it's NOT accompanied by a tornado warning. Unfortunately for me, lots of funnel cloud sightings in my area this year. The "clouds loom over Manhattan" photo was my favorite. Ominous and gorgeous.
Jealousing over a balcony with a view. :)
Thanks for checking out this fluff, Blue. I bet I can see Clifton from my balcony if I knew where to look! Joisey, baby!

DB - I LOVE a good summer storm. But that was some serious lightning, strike after strike with no time for thunder. With 20 feet of panoramic windows, and a great view I really enjoy the less emotional storms!
Ooo, Ask, I don't think I could like in Tornado country. When I was a kid we lived in Evanston, IL for a year and we had one tornado warning, and we fled to the basement of our apartment building. They absolutely terrify me. You're a braver gal than I!

Jen - yeah the view is great but I had to walk up and down those stairs during the Blackout of 2005. 28 stories. Yoiks!
These are fabulous. Photo essays are my favorites. More, more, more.
I love your view! Last week we had a storm with a tornado and my daughter and I had to sit it out in Target. I like yours much better.
No, no, no to tornadoes! I just can't stand the idea of them - I've watched too many of those "Disaster Videos". But if I had to endure one, I guess Target is where I'd prefer to hide out.
In your view, you'll see thee place I spent my grade school years, or 4 of them anyway. Governor's Island. Ft Jay at the time. What a view at night. My Dad said we had a millionaire's view, and we did. At night, watching the Statue of Liberty in all her Glory, was my night light. Great Post.
It looks rather bleak (except for the cat), like Oregon weather. It's nice mood weather.
Awesome photos, WHAT a view you have my dear! Spectacular. You must have a great vantage point for 4th of July fireworks...
Great pics! And when I was a kid I lived in Evanston too. . . Forest and Main wait a minute---there was a Notes From J-Ville in my kindergarten class! You don't suppose. . . .
Scanner - You wrote something a post about living on Governor's Island, right. How lucky you were.

DB - I have to say I prefer gray rainy weather (and the cold). It means a season of not having to exfoliate. Is that wrong? Maybe I should move to Oregon.

AB - I have a friend who has a penthouse on the 35th floor that looks east over the Hudson. She has a 40 foot deck, and we plan to get a couple of brewskis, listen to "Stars and Stripes Forever" and thank the powers that be that they remembered the Hudson is a part of NY, too! Woo Hoo!

CG - I think you are younger than I am. Coming to Evanston was a revelation, and I went out in my loafers during the first snow. My third grade teacher was Mrs. Neal and she changed my life. We took her out to dinner at some restaurant that was all caves and stuff. Does that sound familiar? I learned how to ride a bike, and Tommy Dunn, the son of a cop, gave me my first kiss. I loved Evanston.
Nice view. :-D

I used to live in Mt. Vernon. We would go up on the roof of the apartment building on July 4 and watch the fireworks display from Manhattan. On a clear day.....
Love the gratuitous shot of the cats.
I love those storms as long as I'm indoors. I'm at the Jersey Shore and it's quite a show: darkening, then wind, then it sounds like there's an artillery barrage. The two cats dove under the bed, the dog sat at the top of the stairs and would not come down. I was stuck moving around buckets to catch the damned leaks. But there's still the power...sort of awing.
This is hardly what I would call nuttin! Good stuff! Here in the Chicago area, its looked like it was going to pour for the past 2 days without so much as a drop! Some weird weather! Great post!
Beautiful photos of the storm.. Thanks for sharing.
Great pictures! And I love your commentary! :)
