I am a mom, wife, and nurse. I love being a nurse, even though I have to say at least once a shift, "This is for your own good." I also secretly love poking people with needles, any size. Plus, the Great Plains are not really that plain.

Ode to Soul-Cleansing Music, Part 1 - (Classical Scores)

Rate: 7 Flag

My husband and I mused the other night on underappreciated music, which resulted in this post.  I think we can all use some musical therapy in these stressful times. These selections are classical in nature, but I will post more from other genres later.

I guarantee your mind and soul will be cleansed if you close your eyes and listen to all of these:

Mozart's Requiem - Lacrimosa

I love this piece of music which comes at the end of Mozart's Requiem mass. Mournful, truly, with a heavenly ending.

Beati Quorum Via

Precision, perfection, prepubescence. The Cambridge all-boys choir, a capella, embedding was disabled for this video (link below).  The Choir of King's College, Cambridge sings the famous work by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, one of his 'Three Motets.'

If you don't want to follow the link above, here is another version, almost as good:

Lascia ch'io pianga - Leave me in sorrow (Handel)
If you know Italian, it will help your appreciation of this piece. There is a one minute recitative at the beginning where she is begging God (Signor!) to have mercy on her. In this light, short aria, which belies the dark words, she begs for death, saying, ""Dei, miei martiri, sol per pieta. Eche so spiri la liberta." Only her last breath will bring her freedom. Can you feel your heart ripped out of your chest yet?

The Mission

And my husband's favorite piece of music, from The Mission. Has the oboe ever been played this beautifully or passionately before?

Mozart's Requiem is on my iPod.... I love Handel at the holidays.

Try break from rock & roll...
I'm heavily invested in classical music! rAted!
If your husband gets tired of you, marry me! The Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem is sublime. It was beautifully featured as the funeral music in the movie "Amadeus." My recording is with Sir Neville Mariner. When I read "The Mission," I thought you meant John Williams' "The Mission," which is the theme music to NBC Nightly News and Meet the Press. Obviously I was wrong. I'm so glad you're with OS. (You might consider "favoriting" Hoop Junior and 1IMom, if you haven't done so already. They are classical music enthusiasts). Rated 15 times.
I sang the Mozart years ago in an abbey in Normandy. Deeply tortured edge of genius.
Thanks MAWB!
Mr. Mustard - I bet your investment has had hefty returns over the years!
Steve - I will take that and put it in my back pocket, thank you! (blush) And thanks for rating me 15 times :) And thank you for letting me know about others who may be interested. I remember the scene you are talking about from Amadeus, the horse-drawn wagon that carted his body and dumped it in an unmarked hole. History is a funny thing. I was lucky enough to be in a choir (in a past life) that performed the Lacrimosa as well as Beati Quorum Via, so those two have been favorites for a long time. It is a moving experience to sing them as well as to listen to them.
Yes, tortured genius. The layers upon layers in his music are evidence enough of that. I think it was in the movie Amadeus how he wrote all these ridiculous up-and-down scales into his music. Brutal for musicians.
hey, where's the jimmy buffett?
Hoop, I was just shooting for music par excellence for those with a willing ear.
Cap'n - Jimmy Buffet's aria from Carmen didn't quit make the cut, but maybe one of his other songs will be in a future post in this series!
Thanks for posting this--interesting choices.
I love your tags; oldies but goodies indeed! These are wonderful selections, and I'm going to go to my P2P network and pirate these right. Thanks Liz:)
Nanatehay - ur welcome. Don't do anything I wouldn't do. Do you think anyone's been busted yet for illegal downloads of Mozart?
Should I be depressed this only got a 5 rating? Maybe one of the next installments will have a nude drummer.
You're cracking me up again Liz. The nude drummer may help get more rates, but only if you mention it in your title. And throw in something about masturbation and Facebook, and maybe under-aged sex-addicted shaved gerbils. That's a tried and true formula for high rates and might even get you on the cover.
hey don't jinx me!! How bout a lesbian left-handed albino eskimo? Now that is EP material. Maybe transgendered instead.

It's like you were reading my mind. Apparently you must be having a hard time sleeping too...
Kooky. All three of my brothers were choristers at the St. Thomas Choir School. I'm always startled when someone expresses the slightest interest in choral music. "Boys Choir" does not sound good to many people.
AND - when I was training vocally, I sang "Lascia chio pianga". That was my first major piece. "Deep is my longing for liberty". I was not meant to sing classical, and I'm usually annoyed by the over trained voices in opera.
I'm probably biased because I love the clear soprano of little boys. That's how I grew up.
Kooky!
aim - I sang it also for a solo concert, it is an interesting song to work out vocally also. I do truly enjoy choral music, but my parents did not way back when I was singing in them. It was funny to hear after a number of years how brutal it was for my mom especially. But she went to every single one and never missed a concert, so my feelings werent too hurt.
I love all the music you have chosen. As a composer, I know all about under-appreciated music (including some of my own.) I welcome your comments on my own blog--- perhaps you could write something about "The Value of Art" --your own personal view of what makes art important.
