Cat and Oahu on Left, Right and Race

Rate: 34 Flag

Dear citizens of Open Salon and the Internets beyond: Aloha Kakahiaka and Mornin’ Y’all from Catnlion on the Right; Oahusurfer on the Left.

Neither of us go in for extremism or ideologues, in fact, we have a great deal in common, as do the majority of this great nation. We agree that a Patriot supports discussing all issues from all sides, and that everyone has something of substance to contribute to the USA's national conversation!

This posting is the first in a series meant to engender candid and honest discussion on OS between folks of all leanings. While we have planned this over the holidays for 2011, the events of recent days have made its importance, and its urgency, all too clear.

We encourage all comers and all comments from anywhere on the spectrum. As one of the purposes is to encourage civility, we ask that respect, manners and civil tone be evident when additional points are made to this “Point : Counter Point” format.

My mother and step mother were both teachers. My father was self-employed. He also served as the city manager for some local communities. The family was always involved in the local Republican party. As a child I remember our Congressman being at our house playing bridge. My wife recently found a box of childhood stuff my mother kept. In it was an autographed menu from the Capital Hill dining room where we ate.

Interests/Hobbies/Activities

Small game hunting, fishing. In the past loved to scuba dive.

Real Education (Work Experience)

Mainly the restaurant business. I've owned/operated several quick serve restaurants. I've also owned a retail business which went online in 1995 and is still operating as an online only business. I also owned an accounting and tax practice. I'm currently in trucking as an owner/operator running in all 48 states and I'm leased to one of the top 50 trucking/3PL companies in the country.

Military Background & Experience

The family military experience goes way back. The family history showed that there were members serving on both sides during the American Civil War. During WWII our father was very badly wounded during a land mine explosion. He spent many years thinking he was the only survivor of the explosion. After several decades he found out there were actually two who survived.

I served from 77 to 85 in the Air Force working mainly in emergency rooms and flying Aeromedical Evacuation.

Point (Oahu):

Stop, look at, and listen to the life of anyone you don’t understand and you will quickly see that good people are the same everywhere- we are only one race, the human race.

A race that currently finds itself determining our future in a web of communications full of debate and adjunct name calling, much of which is initiated by Frank Luntz’s firm, The Word Doctors, and funded by US billionaires, a prominent Australian and many Saudis.

Mr. Luntz, poller/politico extraordinaire, spends much of his time with small town folks and white suburb dwellers, conducting focus groups to determine which words to doctor, that is, which words will stoke fear and/or hate into a people who are worried and scared.

Luntz and The Word Doctors operate an extensive international service, finding the key hot words in each local dialect, then using them to influence elections from
Ireland to Australia by crafting disprovable terminology, such as their classic- “Government Takeover,” and their latest- “Job Killing.”

A bunch of wealthy protectionists and sick propaganda artists selling everyone down the river for cash; here We the People find ourselves today, together, now more than ever.

The Internet, and now this web, given to us by the military but perfected by anti-war hippies, and that part is beautiful, has given us venues to discus this, including OS.

How can a country filled with coastal cosmopolitans and good, hard working folks in the middle, who get more sophisticated all the time, come together and buck off this same old divide and conquer strategy that puppet masters have used on us all for centuries?

This OS debate is about, “How can We the People come together against manipulation?” All comers are encouraged to weigh in. Engaged salon behavior is encouraged, constructive criticism and appropriate manners are expected … walk in others' shoes.

Aloha, Oahusurfer

.......................................................................................................................

Counter Point (Cat):

My friend, Oahusurfer, grew up in a world that I as a child could only dream of. A land of sun, sand and surf. A life that I saw through the movies and of course Hawaii Five-O. My world is best expressed in songs such as John Denver's Country Roads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWzeInQaUk4 ) and Hank Williams Jr's A Country Boy Will Survive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4s0nzsU1Wg ).

Oahusurfer is right about so many things, but he only sees part of the story, he doesn't go far enough to get to the beginning. As the late great Paul Harvey was famous for saying, I'm here to tell you “the rest of the story”- which is how we will come together.

Spin. As I read this website I have to say that I sometimes get dizzy from reading the spin that is put on subjects. It's not new. It didn't start with Frank Luntz and The Word Doctors. In the forward to his book, Spin This, All The Ways We Don't Tell The Truth, Bill Press wrote in the introduction “There is no good definition of spin. It's easier to say what it's not than what it is: It's not the truth. Neither is it a lie. Spin lies somewhere in between: almost telling the truth, but not quite; bending the truth to make things look as good-- or as bad-- as possible; painting things in the best possible-- or worst possible—light.” I also opine that spin started with Adam and Eve.

The internet is a great place. It's free, until recently, of lots of government rules that limit our ability to read all sides. Oahusurfer sees Frank Luntz and rich people, I see Glenn Beck and Spookie Dude. Neither is the truth, neither is a lie.

Who here is willing to stop the top from spinning and read what is actually written on it?

Best Regards, Catnlion

Interesting idea. Hope it flies. //=o)
Unity is key in the coming days. But when we look at American history, we often find that when wealthy, powerful interests can profit from dis-unity and division, they will pursue these ends, through the utilization of violence and hatred, with great intensity.

I am reminded of the Civil War. King Cotton stoked the fires of racism and anti-Yankee hysteria and secession-fever, in order to preserve their economic interests and prevent the gvt from regulating these.

In the 1960s, white southern political and economic interests also stoked the fires of division and discord, to prevent integration and the destruction of Jim Crow. The militarists who supported the Vietnam War engaged in de-humanizing the anti-war activists and attacked them.

We do need unity and brotherhood. The olive branch must always be extended to our fellow countrymen. But what should we do if they exchange these olive branches with clenched fists?
I will follow this with much interest to see how well it flies.
I can only hope it goes well here.
What's the difference between a Death Tax and an a Estate Tax? A Death Tax is a made-up word made-up to inflame the conservatives, many who are not even eligible for it. In whose book does it say that when a person dies, all his money and estate should just be passed down with out any taxes on it. Why should someone who has never worked a day in their lives get rich from the luck of the gene lottery? I think it's great to have a discussion that is both civil and in depth. Great Post and great idea!
- mahalo. Perhaps there will be enough sensible people to recognize the need for reasoned discourse and to control the hate rhetoric.
Anyway we can find common ground with those who disagree is positive. I'll follow this dialog with interest.
I would like to thank our favorite surfer for letting me be part of this project and for taking the lead in getting it posted.

I encourage everyone to post. I don't know what I hate worse, a closed mind or a closed mouth. A closed mind never learns anything new while a closed mouth doesn't vent what is really going on in the mind allowing things to build like a pressure cooker until they explode.
For me it comes down to acceptance of the fact that no one holds a patent on right or wrong. That and engagement of individuals in particular. There are many people who I don't agree with yet they are still my friends and they and every one of us deserves the simple respect and courtesy of our beliefs. Always with an open mind and a grain of salt.
Any action is better than no action. Go for it.
Kudos on making a start, taking some step forward. I plan to check in on this as I feel we are closer to each other in every regard the more we tell our stories.
So then.. here, we agree to agree, or just to be nice while disagreeing?

I understand the intent of word manipulation. I understand that those who hold the cash and influence are best served when we are divided; that much of political "discourse" is intended as a distraction to keep the rank and file's minds occupied with extraneous BS while they are continually marginalized.
At this point I see very little difference between D's and R's, red and blue. I think more and more people recognize that both serve the same masters, and that those masters are not we the people.

Is this the kind of 'discussion' you're looking for?
I like this. Word doctoring and spin are the same as far as I can see.
Thanks to all of you for helping this get started. My purpose is to make an effort to point out that very wealthy and powerful interests have used, and often created, the differences between groups as fodder to keep their thoughts away from the hosing they are receiving. Bottom line, people like Luntz know that some percentage of "prols" resent what they perceive as elitism from "bourgeois" while, and look around at the last few days everyone, those of us lucky to have higher education look at those without as dangerous and under control of "Spin".

Trig- no one needs to be nice, simply professional ... anyone here who wants to be a serous writer and even get published some day needs to know what the adults are looking for ...

Aloha Kakou
Trig,

I think you may have hit on a couple ideas. First we all get caught up is a "war of mass distraction". It even a noted selling technique, put something in the offer that will make them blow their lid so they over look the item you are really trying to slide by them.

For the last couple years the Democrats have held all the cards. Not to many years ago it was the Republicans. Now it's split. I wish I had the time and research material to determine what the country did during periods of one party rule and when thing were evenly split and nobody could really dominate the other side.
Interesting concept. I have been on both sides during my lifetime. I never believe that anyone is 100% right or 100% wrong.
I'll be there to watch and comment. I would very much enjoy such discussions. I like to see people support their words, thoughts and world-view.
Good idea. We have to raise the discourse in our country so I salute you for this attempt. Good luck.
The truth of things is often too complicated for the general populace to decipher, is deliberately hidden or spun by special interests, or is plain unobtainable due to the number of variables involved. Then if it is found, there's the question of what to do with it, as it may dilute some people's power or wealth, or enhance others. Some want to know the truth of things to satisfy their need for understanding of how the cosmos works, others are happy to take the partial truths that are available or useful, and profit from them for money or power. Human nature is not likely to change anytime soon, but it's fun to discuss how we might influence it on the margins.

Jim K
I was thinking something along the lines of "adopt a conservative" for those of us who lean more liberal, and "adopt a liberal" for those of us who lean more conservative. Not meant to be a conversion, but a conversation between actual people. I learn a lot from conservatives, and sometimes more than from those who "think like me" and it has broadened my perspective. (see my current post, about living here in AZ)
Maybe I didn't address this in the way you wanted. I have long held the belief that we are manipulated by forces that wish to control us with nonsense like class and race. We are set against each other to keep us from seeing that we actually have more in common than separating us. Am I liberal? Well there are many who would classify me as such but my fiscal attitude is fairly conservative in that I think spending should be justified by results and that the peoples welfare comes before business.
Oryoki,

Great idea, something like Big Brother and Big Sisters ...

bobbot, my sentiments exactly.

I would point out that for all the vitriol on the web there is much, much outreach and good, and that's the tone we are trying to set here ...
this is interesting. Will be back. On a short lunch hour.
The two of you are to be commended for having the foresight and humility to propose this project. IMHO, this is exactly what we need to do here in our OS microcosm to develop of platform for change in the American discourse.

I believe one place to start is to train ourselves to state our opinions without attacking and negatively labeling anyone who sees things from a different perspective.

Words such as bleeding hearts, fucktard, Repugnicans, socialists, etc. are not useful to people who regard themselves as writers with something worth reading to say. Most of us are intelligent enough to say what we have to say without resorting to those kinds of words. For myself, I am far more impressed by, and therefore likely to consider, a well-articulated point of view without villification.

What strikes me about the profiles you each posted here is that you both describe yourselves and fiscally conservative and socially otherwise. And yet, you are viewed by some, I guess, as being on opposite ends of the issues. Imagine that.

Lezlie
Sufer, thanks for giving me a heads up about this discussion. I truly hope that this works here on OS because without open, honest and calm discourse we are no better than those we decry.

It was interesting to read the bios of both you and Catalion and see the different worlds you both come from, yet have been able to find some common ground.

I am a little older than both of you and probably can closer relate to CataLion's background than your own but I have discovered, over the years, that it is better to listen to both sides before making up my mind on any issue.

I look forward to further discussion here and will be watching with interest and commenting when I think I have something constructive to add.
Yes, a real salon is more like what you are doing here. A great idea for this time we live in, hope it works out.
L-

Exactly ... I would point out that what most writers on OS feel is the ultimate success here, to make the cover not of OS, but of Mama Salon.com, requires much of what you state.

In a "Real Salon" you are rated by your work, not you ability to insult.

Disclaimer- I have been guilty of denigration of ideas here, and nobody, nobody, listens once you have put them on defense ... that is also human nature, as alluded to by Jim and Torman.

Rw points out we may have to deal with hostility, but, we are big boys and old time Bruce Lee fans who don't scare by clenched fists.

IMUA (Onward)
Invited as I was to this discussion, I have thought about what I could possibly add to it if anything at all.

(For you see, I speak about politics only rarely, and about American politics even less; though I am declared an American by virtue of a paper, I cannot claim to belong; and I am instead staring in a chasm, not quite sure if I am looking up or down.)

There are allusions made about things that are happening in the mainland of which I know almost nothing about, for, in terms of politics, my island is a world in its own, with little attention paid to the rest of the world, a very island-ish/outlandish atttitude to sport.

That said, as Lezlie's comment so aptly demonstrates, the bar must be raised in posts that seek to discuss culture and politics, not because it would land you on the cover of salon but just because.

Those who resort to boorish discourse indeed have very poor vocabulary and their thought processes should be found suspect.
my apologies for such a lengthy non-reply
Nice idea! Americans all have more in common than not. It always seems to come down to the fork in the road: do we choose Socialism and walk the broken way of Europe? Or do we cling to our guns and our religion {thank you Pres. Obama} and hold true to our Constitution which the majority of countries on earth merely dream about? This will probably always be the argument.

Oahusurfer: did you know Oliver Mitzukami? He was a dear friend of my husbands and lived in Papakolea. How 'bout Barron Makalino? peace out.
I love this! Two people from two very different political perspectives talking to each other like...humans. We need more of this.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling here. This almost seems like it could be it's own independent blog. I like Oryoki's idea, too.
nanatehay

I realize that I'm the "outsider" here. That few people here agree with me and my views. That is why I come here. I want to know what everybody else thinks and learn about things that are not, for a lack of a better term, normal, in my social circle. For that I'm often attacked. Not my views, not my facts, just me.

On the other hand I've made some friends here. Some I've met and one, that if it doesn't hurry up and get warmer here, I'm going to meet very soon. (Surfer, make the spare bed)

I also have to say that I've learned some things. One person more than others and I wished I lived closer to her to be off line friends as well. I've, if not changed, have moderated some of my views. I'm man enough to admit when I make a mistake.

I think one reason people can't find anything more in common with someone other than human is they don't look. There are very few people in this world where I can't find something I like about them, even if we still have our differences.

Oahusurfer, you're Bruce Lee, I'm Steven Seagal. Mine's a better actor, your's is a better fighter.
Amen Brother ... Aloha Beth!!!
Excellent...thank you so much for starting this discussion. Looking forward to your future posts.
Sweet concept. Maybe there's a world where crossover intelligent debate can occur in regards to taxes, wealth distribution, the environment, healthcare, education, welfare, national defense and the economy.

But when it comes to abortion, homosexuality, religion and race? Let's just say the lines are clearly drawn between the forces on either side of those issues. Good luck with the kumbaya on that front.
Oahu and CatnLion... inspired by you, I have written a post that I beg you to please read and leave opinions. I linked this post. Thanks...

RJ-

You are one perceptive 36 year old!

The whole point is the conflicts are constructs, go back hundreds of years, and are designed to keep people with the same needs and interests on separate sides, Divide and Conquer, thanks again Sun Tsu, the Royals had a long time to perfect this so it is tough to overcome, but far from impossible.

The fact is the Web is making this all happen much more quickly than we notice when caught up in our own little reality.

This sounds fascinating. Having recently decided I am somewhere in between the parties, I won't claim one any longer. I will be reading if not commenting.
"This OS debate is about, 'How can We the People come together against manipulation?'”

In my observation one of the things most destructive to true discourse and understanding is labeling. Many of the "discussions" on OS are little more than ad hominem attacks. People on the political right are often referred to as "bigots," "haters," "religious fanatics," "religious extremists," "wingnuts," and so on. In conservative venues the same thing happens, but with different labels: "DemocRats," "libtards," "socialists," "communists," etc.

The purpose of labeling is not to facilitate discussion but to prevent it. Once the label is applied, the person's views can be dismissed without any discussion or exchange of ideas.

It seems to me that a precondition of any serious and productive discourse has to be an agreement among all participants not to engage in labeling. As they say in soccer, "play the ball not the man." Another good rule of thumb is "disagree without being disagreeable."
I wish you luck in your efforts. I have no objection to participating in any such discussions, partially because I believe I already conduct myself in the manner you're advocating and partially because I believe that honesty is ultimately more convincing than manipulation is.

As my father taught me, as a sales technique:
"Always admit the obvious. It's obvious anyway and you'll look like you have more integrity than if you don't."

Manipulation through honesty. Beats the Hell out of the alternative. If your facts don't support your cause well enough, why bother?
I think most of my political persuasion would love to see an intelligent debate about process and policy -- especially since the facts are mostly on our side. Which is exactly why the other side isn't interested in a real debate, but instead engages in guttersnipe Just Say No politics in order to defeat the President -- even if it brings down the country.

But hey, give it your best shot.
Kudos to our very own OS Bruce Lee and Steven Siegel! I applaud this effort to overcome the politics of division and begin a new conversation. We certainly have the opportunity to begin again.

The word doctors and spin meisters have dissected our nation's people into various groups which war among each other. This is, I believe, why we no longer care for our fellow Americans. As resources are sucked into the 1% of us on top, we are jealous of each other.

I welcome this invitation to care for each other again. To dance rather than fight.
Hmmmm...what will best serve the dialogue? People learning how to constructively communicate as much as possible. This is a skill we are lacking as a whole community. I look forward to the discussions!

"Oahusurfer is right about so many things, but he only sees part of the story, he doesn't go far enough to get to the beginning. " Perhaps, that's why we need to have open discussion, so that we don't necessarily see the other part of the story, but more so how people's lives inform their experiences and why it is that we view the world as do. No one can see the whole story.

“How can We the People come together against manipulation?” Education and sharpening of critical thinking skills.

Just some thoughts.
We must simply learn to live with our differences in a civil and humane way. But as you have so eloquently pointed out...we have much more in common than we imagine.
So why haven't y'all followed this up?
Good luck with this. Sounds like things are moving on the islands in new directions.
I would like to visit the Pacific one day, but Capitalism makes this too expensive. I can only afford $50 a night and would be fine eating spam and french fries every day. However, people tell me I can only live in the Pacific by eating 500 dollar pineapple and 1,000 dollar steak.

Please write an essay telling people how they can live and survive affordably in Polynesia, if they have to escape from North America.

You clearly have a good head on your shoulders...Thanks so much!
I like the open dialogue! Smart idea. And thanks for your comments. Surf has been pretty darn good post-Irene. And I'd love to make it up to Ruggles at some point. I need some new surf points! Too set it my ways - which means surfing right up my street.

Love the younger you photo surfing. Super cool.

Oh, I rose an Alia - one of the old, old boards - behind a boat a few weeks ago. No fins, pretty much just a plank of board. Very challenging but fun.
Love surfing these ideas with you...
What an interesting concept. I will certainly tune in and give my commentary.
Hello? Hello? Oahu? WHERE ARE YOU??!! Do you still ever visit Open Salon? "PLEASE ADVISE"! How can we discuss things, or even just say "hello", if you're not here?????
