8/17
On the first night of work I was nervous and worried about how things would go. Were my coworkers going to be sane and helpful or would they be nuts and create problems. The second night I had to fight the urge to say "to heck with this" and just go to bed. By the third night I had adjusted and was ready to go.
The first two night, despite my efforts to do otherwise, I ended up on the first register. The third night I planned it just right and got on the second one, this means less counter time and more around the shop work time. So I spent the majority of the night wiping and straightening and filling shelves, an empty shelf sells nothing. There were dead moths everywhere especially in the souvenir cups (if you buy a souvenir cup wash it well before you use it). Basically it was a good night.
I discovered something interesting about my new coworker, he says "That's what she said" a lot. And it's not like your standard "she said" comment, usually it has nothing to do with what was actually said, for instance, I was pushing the mop bucked and mentioned the wheels only rolled sideways, "That's what she said". I just gave him that "hu?" look. Oh it's going to be interesting.
There's something I noticed about customers at night, the amount of body adornment increases dramatically. I would say the number of tattooed and multiple pierced people is about 10 to 1 of non tattooed customers. And most of them are not well done or well thought out masterpieces. Most look like they were done with the ball point pen and the needle attached to the 9 volt battery. At least they are colorful.
The night wound down and it was time to log out. I asked the woman who had been there a while to walk me through it and she said I should know it by now. I told her I was rushed through the process the first two times but she refused. So I winged it. In the end I was $19800.01 short (I hope it's not coming out of my check). It turns out when you punch in the total you leave in the drawer you just put in the dollar amount and not the change so I punched in 20,000 instead of 200. What this meant was in all reality I was one cent short at the end of the day. I would say that was pretty good.
Before I left the manager had come in and asked what days I wanted off, again. I said I would rather have Wednesday and Thursday since they are the slowest days of the week and just sitting around would make me nuts. I picked up this annoying "work ethics" thing and if someone is paying me for a hour I want to do an hours worth of work. With the Friday through Tuesday shift you generally end up with just one slow day and are busy the rest of the week. Plus I get two days off right away instead of having to work all the way until Monday of next week.
And so ends my first three days of the night shift. So far it has been uneventful but Labor day weekend is coming up and next Friday things will get interesting. "Thats What She Said!"
The benefit of working the graveyard shift, great sunrises.

And to that you can add "That's what she said," since it is indeed what I, a she, said. :-)
In all seriousness, I always crack up when people say that. Always.
Looking forward to your next post!
