Just a piece of my heart now baby.
I love this, but right now I'm embroiled in porn. I will do this one tomorrow.
Ha!!! Can I just say, Sally, that I too want to be embroiled in porn and that, if one must be involved in porn, one should definitely be EMBROILED in it?
Years ago, the blowhard hypocrite William Bennett was on "Fresh Air," and he noted that he'd once been on a blind date with Janis. He tried not to convey too much contempt, but it was difficult. I do not recall the exact words, but I think he said she was a sad and lost and pitiful character--but I sensed not pity but perhaps delight at her demise.

Well, who has contributed more to the heart and soul of America? A vibrant singer--an original--who always gave 100 percent, or a fat and greedy stooge who probably paid his interns 10 bucks an hour to dig up a few dozen moral stories so he could package them between hard covers and score another couple million? He is quite nearly already forgotten (I hope), while Janis will always live on.
Thanks, jw! She was like many of us who are alive. So very alive but she didn't know it.
this is a trip, girl. you've been in my addled mind. i've been singing oh lord, won't you bye me for several days now. saw janis in concert back in the day. jimi hendrix too, etc. i love me some janis. thanks!
Oh yeah. Take another little piece of my heart.
Courtney Love - because I am doll parts and I want to be the girl with the most cake.
I'm going to pop Janis in the player on the work drive tomorrow (if I can get up after staying up way too late again on OS). Saw her live (bottle of bourbon and a stool were only items on the stage)in the late 60's in a small gym in NC. A night I'll never forget. And Bill Bennett's wife (Elaine) was a classmate of mine in grad school and we went to their wedding and he should have stuck with Janis - but that's another story. He was and is a total blowhard!
Great memories here.
Super cool! I love these lists, but I keep getting songs stuck in my head after reading them.
Liz Phair. Because she taught me how to fuck and run.
Janis was great. And don't forget Me and My Bobby McGee!
Freedom's just another word for "nothing left to lose".
Ah, jeeze, but I loved JJ -- Bobby McGee, Piece of My Heart, Mercedes Benz....

Best footage I ever saw of her was a rockumentary called Festival Express, which also featured The Band and, if I recall correctly, The Greatful Dead. An insight into Janis that was truly poignant. I wish I had a copy of it.
Bobby McGee! Janis lived a lot of life in her short life.
Festival Express was great. I've seen it a couple of times. Not exactly a whitewash but entertaining as hell.
People often speak of Janis in the same breath with Jim Morrison - too young, too talented flamed out. I always think of her with Ron McKiernan, Pigpen of the Grateful Dead. He was lost after she died and he followed her all too soon. I remember the Dead doing "He's gone, and nothin's gonna bring him back, he's gone" and their voices were cracking.
We lost too much too soon.
I am a copycat! (because this was fun.) No surprise in my choice of Rock Star.
this is the first I've seen of these :) going to have fun this afternoon
LOVE Janis! Great choice.
Janis (Rest Her Heart) was Kurt Cobain twenty years removed or more properly, the other way 'round. Young people full of promise and talent that stood on the shoulders of musical and cultural giants that ultimately found themselves lacking. We'll never know what, if anything, they may have achieved musically but their untimely deaths gave them iconic status, whether deserved or not.
Hmmm...you did well, but I would have a hard time with this one.
I was at my sister's this past week and she has a bunch of Dick Cavett Show DVDs and we watched the whole disc of the shows that featured Joplin. I could watch that stuff all day. The episode with Joplin and Racquel Welch was a study in opposites.
