The Double Standard of Naked Shirtless Hollywood

Rate: 32 Flag

I promise to put up ghost stories tomorrow. But I've been busy! There's no time for fun. Boo. I have to pick up the Kid early today and go get our H1N1 vaccinations and then the grocery store and then my dissertation and then ...

Yeah, it's busy but also boring. Anyway, this post is about something else.

This week, I was with some friends and acquaintances of friends in this mom group. I've met with a bunch of them several times to do kid-related activities, etc. One of the first times I met with them, several of them were lamenting the evilness of Disney kids and what terrible role models that they were and how ubiquitous it all is. Especially they vilified Miley Cyrus (and this week also stood back in horror over Noah Cyrus's Halloween costume, to which I could only agree--for crying out loud, did no parent see this outfit beforehand?) Anyway, the general consensus is that Miley is a big ole' slut, etc.

When I pointed out we'd never met the girl and really what business is it of ours anyway, I got a lot of cold shoulder and shocked looks. Had I not seen THIS PICTURE?!? (Referring to the Vanity Fair shots of Miley's bare back when she was 15.) Miley, I was told, was a dumb, hillbilly slut, a terrible role model, etc. etc. I changed the subject.

Then, this week, a bunch of them were talking about the Twilight saga, the next installment "New Moon" which is airing soon as  major motion picture.

I don't know if y'all have read these books. They are fairly silly, although I did read the first one and enjoy it. After that, they got too sexist for me, and I quit reading them. Anyway, never mind my opinion. They are popular among teenage girls and the MOTHERS of teenage girls. It's the romance.

That's fine, really. I like a smarmy romance novel with the best of them. I saw the first movie on Pay Per View and thought, "Meh." And that was the end of my consideration of the matter until the day before yesterday.

The day before yesterday, the women started talking about seeing the movie with their tweens and how they were looking forward to it, too because of Taylor Lautner.

Here is a photo of Taylor Lautner:

Here is a very stylized graphic photo of the movie promo of Taylor Lautner:

 Taylor is 17.

Now, I must make this clear. I do NOT CARE that Miley showed her back. Who cares? We all have backs. Yes, the photo could be seen as suggestive. I can understand some protest. She was 15. I do not care that Taylor is showing his front. Damn. From the look of the promos, he spends the majority of the movie without a shirt on in the Pacific Northwest. I'm just glad he didn't catch a cold!

Then, we have what happened the day before yesterday. The same women who pooh-poohed Miley for showing her back were openly lusting over Taylor. Have I mentioned Taylor is 17?

I made a face, said he was 17 and got a "So what, baby! He's hot!" from these women.

 WHAT?!? my inner mind asked.

Anyway, I'm not the only one to notice this stuff.

Yahoo came out with an article about it. You can read it HERE.

They ask about the double standard. Miley must apologize for showing a portion of her naked back when she is 15. And she's a big slut.

Taylor, 17, shows a very large portion of his upper torso and everyone thinks it's a-okay.

Now, I get it that women don't go around topless in our society, but ...

I have a question. What do you all think?

Is it a double standard? I say yes. But you may all feel differently.

Feel free to comment. Don't be fighting. What do you think?

And next, I will post two ghost stories. I promise to be in the holiday spirit. I promise.
I think that his pants are a little low. You're right about the double standards.
I'm a little grossed out by adult women coveting an underage boy. From his face, he looks about twelve. And. . . I remember seventeen-year-old boys too well to ever actually be interested in them.
to euphoinque odetteroulette - 'double-standard' pshaw whats youse writin? dis ise de FASCIST SHITFOOK CUNTREE of 'the OBAMA' there ain't no standards here in SHITFOOK 'the OBAMA's land - only his fiat/command - bless his FOOKED-UP name!!! Ha.frumm hemidemisemiquavered 'my-prick-is-da-extension-of-my-tv-clicker' beisbol lefty slider zaj[but duz it have a remote button?] Ha.
Double standard, yes.

When did "Noah" become a girl's name and not a boy's?

I don't like her Halloween costume, but I don't get the kerfuffle over her and her friend's matching bathing suits. They were high-necked, low-legged pink one-piece suits with ruffled skirts. I think I wore the same suit when I was six. I don't know why there was a red carpet for this pool party, or which 19-year-old's birthday party they were attending, but we don't know that it was some sort of coke-fueled drunken debauchery that no sane parent would let their 9-year-old attend. Anyone consider it may have been the birthday party of a family friend and a completely innocent event to which people of many ages were invited?
For my nickel's worth I don't see one bit of difference between a middle aged man lusting after a seventeen year old girl and middle aged woman lusting after a similarly aged boy. Fort that matter why is it that it is generally accepted that young men can be posed nearly nude in every situation while photographing a girl of the same age or just having that photo in some form in your possession would land a man on an offenders list with his life destroyed? It cannot be okay to sexualize young men and criminalize the sexuality of young women the same standards must apply to everyone. Now, let the savaging begin.
I'm with Jess in that his pants are too low...
I think much of the double-standard comes from a fact you mention in your post - Miley is wrapped in a bed sheet which is pretty suggestive. Taylor for the most part is standing around looking bulked-up. If they had him posing in a bedroom scene (imagine romance novel cover) I think there would have been more of an outburst about it.
From an artistic viewpoint, the human body is a beautful thing, male or female - which is why we all admire it, and why all of the great masters painted nudes!
I think it's a double standard in both directions. That is, if we're putting down Cyrus for the back shot, it makes no sense to fawn over this picture. But if we're outraged on behalf of Cyrus's sexual victimization re the back shot (and there was plenty of that kind of angst at the time), then we should feel the same about Taylor. Either they are both sluts or they both deserve sympathy for being exploited sexually for commercial gain. Or maybe it's all of the above. I'm in a generous mood today, so you can pick any of those scenarios you'd like. No charge. :)
Definitely double standard. I see it more today than I did 10 years ago. The picture of Miley wasn't that outrageous the sheet was well above her waist and merely suggestive, in fact, she's actually more covered than Lautner. The photo of Lautner is overtly sexual and shot well below his waist. In fact, I bet he's got a plumber's butt on the other side of that photo.
Double standard. Period. Going off to mumble to myself, now . . .
Taylor Lautner is smoking hot. Makes my head spin.
Yes double standard. How many women stop and stare? Be honest now.
Since men and boys of all ages can be seen in this state on beaches, at pools, and while sunbathing at the park, I don't think it's very daring. I wouldn't get upset at a movie poster showing a picture of a 17-year-old girl in a bikini, either. I'd be more concerned over what diet a 17-year-old actor used to achieve that figure, assuming the undoubtedly photoshopped image is even close to resembling the real person.
I think a big part of the double standard comes from the idea that young women need more protection than young men. People worry that if Miley shows her back a grown man might see it and attempt to take advantage of her. I doubt those people are worried about the grown women who might attempt to take advantage of Taylor. Part of that is due to the idea that women can’t physically overpower a man, whereas a man could overpower a woman, but a big part of it stems from the belief that men ‘just can’t help themselves’ so women better make they don’t accidently turn them on. It’s an attitude that’s enormously insulting to the majority of men in the world (those who don’t think if they’re attracted to a woman, said woman is obligated to sleep with them).
Same reason John "Lollipop Head" Mayer is a stud for dating every co-dependent starlet in Hollywood but Jennifer Aniston is a lonely old hag who will never find love. When men put their sexuality on display they are studly. When women do it we are pathetic attention seekers or even worse, cougars. It's serious bullshit.

I think a big part of why no one is up in arms about Taylor’s picture is that men don’t care, and as long as it’s not a young woman being exploited, women don’t really care either. Boys’ sexuality isn’t prized like girls’ sexuality is. Our precious virginity is the only thing keeping us women from horrible, dirty sluts. And even that isn’t always a lock. A man might make a joke about beating off to a picture of a hot, young girl, but he might think twice about commenting on a sexy picture of a young man, even if he thinks it’s exploitive, because he might be thought *gasp!* gay.

That’s just my theory.

Twilight had its moments. Though some parts made me laugh till I cried. Like when Bella's on Edward's back and his feet are cartoon peddling through the forest, classic comedy right there. Jacob/Taylor is a cute kid. I’d take him to prom. I’ll take him over smelly-looking Edward any day. I may be a dirty old lady, but a cougar I am not! There’s a difference.
Yep. He's shirtless and seems to be about to fall out of his pants but that's just fine. Miley showed her back and she's a bad role model.

I've always thought this has more to do with our views toward female sexuality than anything else. Boys will be boys but girls will be virgins. Yes, I think there's a double standard.
My initial reaction to that Taylor picture is it's in poor taste. Yes, he has a perfectly molded body (which I happen to be a little turned off by--guys who spend 10-hours working out with machines don't do it for me). It just seems more appropriate for a Playgirl magazine or something.

As for Miley's pictures--I thought they were beautiful and done very tastefully. Showing a girl's back is different from showing a woman with huge breasts and a toned abdomen in a tiny string bikini. And I happen to think Miley is a talented, nice girl from what I've read and seen.

Your playgroup moms are acting like desperate housewives (with bad taste)!
Absolute double standard and people can't see how the gender roles come into play in its application.

As for books, read The Hunger Games. You'll forget all about that insipid Mormon porn book Twilight.
First off, that photos is soooo "edited" and yeah his pants are too damn low! And double hell yeah to the BS double standard! Its just plain stupid!
Oh, yes, FLW. There's always a double standard when it comes to being sexual.
I drink doubles.
I play doubles.
I bet double or nothing.
I lust after the doublemint twins.

Therefore, WTF is wrong with a double standard.

I would like to see the female naked torso of starlets, but don't particularly want to admit it.

The double standard is good.

Double good.
I was surprised to find Twilight to be quite Victorian in it's romantic style, all delayed yearnings and crossed communications. But I suppose that is what Gothic is all about, isn't it? WRT the photos of the teens, I think both are graceful, highly polished images of handsome young people - images which transmit the blossoming beauty of youth to the viewer, a subject matter which has been a focus of art for centuries. Since I am not a parent, I am not in a position to wonder what effect such images might have on my own child. I would hope that they would serve to alert them to the beauty of a difficult phase of life? Regardless, I do not see the images as pornographic in the least.
It is the person and the body that appeals to the opposite sex, and not the age. Miley may have been 15 at the time her back showed, but it wasn't about her having sex. It is a photograph she approved of. And none of the good parts were showing, anyway.

The post and some comments confirm that both men and women like to look at a good body. Since Miley is obviously past puberty, I'm fine with checking her out. More appealing to me than looking at the current Madonna who is now over 50.

No one is forced to look at these pictures. Those who enjoy will enjoy.
Total double standard regarding Miley vs Taylor, though the slightly creepy picture of Miley and her dad was a bit weird. And no, Nick, double standards are doubleplusungood.
Of course there's a double standard. However, in the United States, men had best view pictures with sunglasses on while women can just eyeball em straight up.
I definitely think there's a double standard. Putting a kid in a witch's costume next to a picture of a dominatrix outfit, complete with whip, doesn't make them one in the same.

I am, however, going to ask my husband if he wouldn't mind doing a few crunches later.
I wanna weigh in: Ladies, let us quit striving to be our gender's own worst enemy. No man belittles, demeans, and denigrates like a woman!

Cyrus is a commodity--she's pimped out--no point underscoring the banality of it (to borrow a page from Stellaa), but that Leibowitz (sp) photo is remarkable because it captures the sex of the Cyrus brand without aggressive/overt smuttiness--it subverts the exploitation associated with Cyrus (and her ilk) by elevating sensuality and omitting flash. Cyrus-the-smut is a dime a dozen--I can go to the local middle school and round-up thirty look alikes--but I cannot reproduce that Leibowitz-Cyrus without myself possessing a Leibowitz aesthetics--and that makes her pic a rare commodity, and, as such, threatening (I can't buy it at Walmart)--nobody likes to be reminded that they are disposable--as are all those poor mislead middle school wannabes. The Lautner, on the other hand, is forgettable--I am pretty sure he too is found in the local gym.
The world needs more big ole' sluts.

Those are the sluts of the Spanish persuasion, right?
Actually, besides thinking the whole things is mostly retarded, I don't think there's a double standard. For one thing, he's 17, and at that age most states consider you old enough to consent; I don't know of any that give that to a 15 y/o (male or female). Plus, Miley (as far as I know), up until now, has played the "innocent," and sex never comes up on Disney. Not so with Taylor; the first I've seen of him is a vampire, which are not known for being sexless. Miley is in the midst of that awkward teen time of going from "daddy's little girl" to "sex kitten," and I dare any mom or dad to express total comfort with their underage kid posing in a (semi?) nude/suggestive pose with a bedsheet for a mass audience (sure, it's a pretty picture, but it's full of sexual innuendo too). And besides, what is the cut-off for such a picture, 14, 13, 12? Years ago I saw pics of an 8 or 9 y/o girl which I thought were fantastically done (I mean these were really, really, beautiful, a testament to the photographer's skill and the perfection of the girl), but the girl was (mostly) naked. Kiddy porn or art?

Is there a double standard for men and women involving sex/nudity? Yes. Should a 15 y/o get jumped on for a sexy pic when a 17 y/o is praised? Maybe not jumped on, but it's not quite the same thing (if that pic were found on a sex offender's computer, at it weren't in a magazine since she's 15 he'd probably be convicted of having kiddie porn and in violation).
Good comments all, and interesting. I must say I enjoyed the part about the prick being an extension of the clicker thing very much. ha.

To the last comment, actually Miley is now indeed seventeen, but the commentary has not in the least stopped. In fact, it has grown. Miley's shorts "are too short." You can "see her breasts too much." She "is a slut." sigh.

Taylor is still considered "hot." And not at all slutty, despite his state of undress. And he was considered hot when he was in "Twilight" at 16, too.

Also, why is it that Miley is, very correctly, only allowed to play the innocent of her childhood and apparently must do that FOREVER and not be the young person who is coming into her sexuality. That's the issue, really. The boy is allowed. The girl is not.

My desire would be that neither of these young people be called that stupid ass word 'slut', that both be allowed to simply be what they are--young people.

I understand the extra Disney problem that exists for Miley. Disney holds out the Lolita thing with one hand and denies it with the other. They do. One has only to watch the channel, as I do when the Kid wants to see Handy Manny and know there's a lot of hot school girl stuff happening there, especially in their music videos of their female stars. Of course, this makes Disney very much like middle America. Middle America loves to be titillated, but also loves to stress over sexuality as something evil. It's so peculiar. It's a very Britney Spears' state of being. Good to be the hot young school chick who is a "virgin." Bad to actually become the woman, which is , you know, inevitable if one continues to be alive, and be sexual in any way.

Monsieur Chariot, I believe, speaks for me about how those kids' photos are both really rather beautiful. I don't think it's pornographic either. And Leibowitz's photo is superlative as a work of art as ghost writer has mentioned. And as such, it puts OUR discomfort on display. It is uncomfortable to think of a young girl of 15 having anything to do with sensuality, and yet ... that's why she's in that Lolita position. So, the audience gets uncomfortable, because it forces them to see the truth of that situation and maybe look at their own stuff up close and personal.

I'll be honest here, too, and say I don't quite get it in full, because while I can appreciate the beauty, I see them both as children. So ... you know ... I can't get excited about Lautner shirtless. Because he's a child to me.

Anyway, I've pontificated enough. Keep commenting, please. I want to hear your thoughts. :)
It's the same ol' double standard that allows a man who's bedded lots of women to be a "stud" and a woman who's bedded lots of men to be a "ho." But I'd add there's a significant difference between a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old. Lautner is a few months shy of adulthood in the legal sense while Cyrus (at the time of the photo) was three years by the calendar and light in maturity from being an adult. You want to see something creepy? Look at the promo pics for Justin Bieber, a 15-year-old singer who's coming up the ranks. I saw them on Yahoo the other day. I wonder what his parents must think.
surprise! yep, theres a double standard. its called female vs male!!
I still say he looks an awful lot like Johann Paulik. Look it up. Wonderful photo. Who is this Miley you speak of?
thank you. you just made my day. those silly bitches you hang out with never graduated from high school, did they?
I've been saying that we need more photos of topless 15 year old girls for years, but does anybody listen?
Double standard, yes, but one that is understandable on some level. At least to me. I think the double standard involves perceived vulnerability, of which women are generally, due to their ultimate responsibility for the pregnancy.

And 15 is more vulnerable than 17, in any event. Plus, men are allowed to bare their chests. But, then, women may, also, in Austin.
Correct as usual on this, and I agree.

These phrases cross my mind as I read this post: exploitation of youth, emphasis on youth, kiddie porn, inappropriate, age-appropriate, lust, forbidden fruit, women peak sexually at a different age than men, advertising wonks go for the gusto, it's all about selling a movie.

Okay, time for coffee.
I would rather to see Taylor's hoo hoo thane Miley's.
Yes double standard, but I'll take that.
But Z Bitch, that's not about a double standard. You like men, silly. That's why you want to see him naked. That makes some sense, although he is utterly underage.

I just like me some equality, that's all.
I have a question for the editors, where's the picture of Miley on the cover?
Why shouldn't people have the right to decide for themselves how they are willing to be photographed? Nobody forced Miley to pose the way she did.

Some babes, regardless of their age, are willing to show what they have, while others aren't. I thought freedom of choice is still a big part of what makes America great.
