What I have learned from blogging on OS

Rate: 62 Flag

OS is a safe place to write and experiment

OS has smart people who know how to write, draw, photograph and create works of art.

OS bloggers are a generous group of human beings.

OS bloggers resist change

OS bloggers make mistakes, but own up to them and apologize.

OS bloggers come from the four corners of the world.

OS is like no other blogging site.

OS helped me recognize that I'm a good writer.

OS helped me learn to write in different styles and genres.

Without OS I wouldn't have made this exploration. I might have gone on in my life questioning whether I had the skills to write.

I've met some really great people on line here. I've even met some of them in person.

I wish I could as good a write as well as (fill in almost any other writer here) _________, but I do the best that I can. I'm flattered more by the people who "favorite" me and make comments than by the occasional EP that I get.

I'm surprised that some people perceive me as one of the kewl kids here. Don't they know we're all kewl kids here.

I can't list all my favorites here in the post, because I'll leave someone out by error of omission and I'd feel really badly about that.

The seven and half months I've been a blogger here have changed my life. Now that's what I learned about from blogging at OS.

Well said doggie and a big DITTO !
OEsheepdog, you make a lot of great points here and reading how the site has allowed you to explore your writing skills and the feedback that you have received is extra special. It's a very relaxed atmosphere here and in a lot of ways reminds me of college where students were encouraged to explore their talents and push their ideas farther.
I'm learning the same stuff - and so glad to be here! Thanks, Sheepie!
What you said, Sheepdog. Moi aussi.
I don't know if you're one of the kewl kids, but you're sho'nuff kewl, Dog.
word.

I mean, woof.

:-)
me too! and you know I love ya' and your writings! GOOD DOG!
You aren't fooling me...You are just feeling guilty over that , ah, "love" story you almost killed some of us with here recently. Bad dawg, in a good way. I just have one question: Was this post approved by the OS queen bees before publication? I would hate to see you impounded and having to write a forgive me post to get back any viewers.
SheepDoggie... you are one brilliant dog. Sometimes these things we take for granted, until they are pointed out.

Well done!
I have to agree with you. About everything. I've only been here a month (today) and I can see improvements in my writing already. I have had wonderful encouragement from many many people here.
Very nice, OE! Thanks for giving us this view of yourself and OS.
I've learned a lot from you and the OS community. Thanks for this positive post. It made me happy.
Nicely said OE. Love the new avatar as well - new do for fall?

I think you have earned your place as a kewl kid.
Every blogging site needs a warm, fuzzy blogger...you're it!
Trig -- I feel a bit like Rush Limbaugh after that comment.

John -- That a good point about the collegial experience. The fact that we don't get charged tuition makes it even better.

Owl -- You're welcome wise owl.

Janie -- Woof woof woof

Stellaa -- So far I can agree with that observation.

Poet -- Merci.

john -- thanks pardner

spotted mind -- woof.

fab -- you're da bomb!

Dr. Spud -- That post really struck a nerve with ya. I guess as a writer that's the ultimate compliment.

Sandra -- thanks for dropping by.

George -- you are too kind.
OH! I SO agree with all of this! Isn't it nice to slow down and list all of these qualities for which to be grateful? And I'll bet you think of twenty more things. I, too, thank my lucky stars for OS.
Everything you said. Plus the fact that I'm all about the attention.
Excellent observation skills there, Puppy!! I totally agree!!
I agree whole-heartedly with your points OES. The diversity inspires and the opportunity to share is truly unique. I, too, am very thankful for finding OS.
It's sort of like cake, but the fat doesn't go to my waist. ;-D

Well said. I've been writing creatively off and on for "a very long time", and very few people actually knew it. Until Barry pointed me to this place (I did post some of my poetry on Flickr, but just a bit). Open Salon gave me the opportunity to bounce my stuff off of some really talented people, people who gave me some solid advice (and an occasional roundhouse kick to the head when I needed it). OS doesn't ALLOW me to write but it does ALLOW me to be READ.

Thanks for putting it succinctly (and for not using bullets).

Thumbed.
I had a similar experience with my writing. Knowing it was just going to sit in a drawer, I didn't care much about making a finished product. Left poor passages, typos, crooked sentences, because what difference did it make? Instant publishing made me think a whole lot more all the way through the writing process.
OE, this is so sweet - you have a very soft, giving heart, and it shows in all your posts and comments. I appreciate having you here!
As one of the first people who added me as a favorite my hat is off to you. I've only been here just under a month but I see the same things you do. The intelligence on display, the creative risks, the acceptance that everyone has an opinion and is free to share it is wonderful. Great post. And keep writing.
Agreed, OE. The only thing I haven't learned on OS, that I wish I could, is how many licks to the tootsie roll center.

Seriously tho, it's a pretty good place overall. The only time I'm not happy here is when the fur flies. And then? Well, then I just log off and come back later. All better.
Not to be unduly flattering, but I have perceived you as a role model since I've been here. Thanks.
It's nice to read something positive about OS.
A great list that relfects a lot of my own OS journey and it looks like that of plenty others as well. Kewl is just a state of mind...
You deserve a paw shake, many pats on the head, and a good treat. rated
@gracielou - The answer, according to the commercial, is 3.
What I really, really learned is, if you have a big ego, you better find another blogging site. Your ego can and will take a beating, which, is a good thing. (every once in a while)
OE: You are one of my favorite favorites, here, and your writing is read and appreciated always. Here's to more success and friendship for you.
Stellaa. giggles. no dandruff?
O.S. bloggers and readers got?
O stinker feet?
I smell awful!
I'm baby sat.
You write what i want to say.
How's your sailboat, Sheep? Been back to the Frying Pan? I loved reading your last steamy piece, having met the author.
I agree completely. OS is a wonderful community with a great mix of people and talents that I always enjoy.

I've been here for almost a year now (blame Barry) and I like this little corner of the Internet a lot. I even took down my old blog elsewhere because being here is just so much better than anywhere else.

Hmm. Hope that doesn't sound too commercial-y. It's true though.
yeah, agree with all of those- this is a good place
Well said. It's been a positive experience for me, too.
Thanks for sharing that--I agree--OS is great!
o sheep this is just wonderful. heartfelt, moving, but lightly done nonetheless. perfect.

THIS:
"Don't they know we're all kewl kids here"

As kewl as our honesty permits. Which makes you the kewlest of the day!
Aw Sheepy - you are sweet, smart, and special. That's one of the cool things I learned since joining OS. To think - I would never have met you if not for this crazy venue!
Thanks for sharing all these blessings with us. I hope you'll inspire others to join the party.
Stephen -- The more you post the more improvements you make.

Rob -- Hat tip to you for asking me to think about what I've learned.

Gwendolyn -- You made my day with your comment.

Annette -- Thanks

Buffy -- What a nice thing to say.

Deborah -- I appreciate it.

OM -- Very kind of you to comment.

Hells Bells -- You probably think this post is about you....;)

Lois -- I resemble that comment.

Smithery -- Right on.

VR -- (wags tail)

Bill -- Allows me to be read...nice way of putting it. As for bullets, I use bullets in my day job. No need for them here.

jimmymac -- the quality of your work shows. thanks

silk -- Wow, thanks

JLee -- Appreciate your comments, always.

GJI -- Kind of you sir to share that. Means a lot.

1womansvu -- Thanks

gracielou -- I hear you on the conflict, but sometimes conflict is good.

walt -- (speechless) thanks

don -- is that a republican woof?

emma -- thanks. I enjoy and respect your comments

melissa -- you're right about state of mind
wow, i love you, OE. you are such a wonderful and generous soul. i feel honored to know you the little that i do and for you reading my posts. i don't always feel safe on here, nor does everyone apologize, but i agree with everything else you mentioned. thank you for not listing your favorites. well, we know who they are from your Favorites List. :) what a lovely piece to write. love love love and huge gratitude and i hope the wonderpups and i get to meet you some day!
No fleas on that! Happy Summer.
You deserve a treat after this one. I think hanging out at OS has definitely made me a better person, not to mention I've never written anything before I got here and I rather enjoy it. I would probably write more if I could possibly stop reading all the great content here. It's like that double edged knife people talk about.
I've also been reminded how important it is to balance giving and receiving. Great list OSheep.
I'm one of the new kids on the block and it sounds like I've landed in a great community.

(And from the looks of some of these comments, I've got some catch-up reading to do.)
Well my dawg, I know YOU are super cool.

i just got here on OS and am still trying to figure things out. i so love your list. and your stuff. i think this just might work.

thanks a billion.
Dogs are especially good at that. That's why we love 'em.
I agree with it all, and bravo to you for writing it all down for the rest of us.
Now, I'm not blog-whoring (or is it pimping? I'm just that up with the prostitution terms - ha!), but here's what I said in my post that went up on Thursday: "…The warm reception on Open Salon has been sanity saving for me. While I dearly miss the camaraderie between writers in a newsroom, OS has filled that gap nicely."

I learn new stuff from people on OS every single day. For that, and for all of you, I am grateful.
"And you are a kiss ass."

and what do YOU kiss?

And a great big tail waggin' lick across your face!

Nice group hug, there, OE! I can hear the panting of little paws everywhere.
Knock, knock. knock....... Are you still accepting awards?

I'm late, as usual, but stopped by to give you yours for being such a loving soul.

You're the kewlist. Seriously. You brighten up the joint. OS would be a lonelier place without you.
