Yonkers on a Sunday -- Photoessay with Nudity

The Yonkers waterfront has been transformed in the last several years with a lovely esplanade and sculpture garden at the southern end facing the Manhattan skyline.

Here in the garden are some whimsical sculptures:

As you look north you can see the old Yonkers pier, home to the Water Taxi and X20 Restaurant

Even the Metropolitan Tranportation Authority commissioned art work on each side of the railroad trestle that leads to the river IMAGE_059

The plaque is polished aluminum. The street scape is a reflection off the plaque. Not bad for a camera phone. Thanks for taking a walk with me along the Hudson River today. So I lied about the nudity. Someone in Yonkers is nude today, somewhere, just not here

OEsheepdog, it's great to see all of the attention that has been paid to the waterfront in Yonkers. Not many cities possess such a beautiful view of a magnificent river with a lot of history attached to it. Thanks for this comprehensive look at the many sites that Yonkers has near the river's edge!
John your post last week of your day trip in Manhattan was the inspiration of this post. Thanks for the comment and for stopping by.
Thanks for the sweet stroll, OE.
Good luck this week!
Thanks for taking me along. Who knew Yonkers was so beautiful?
Despite the lying, this was quite a nice trip :)
Loved all the sculpture. Have a safe or enjoyable time away... Hugs.
What a gem. I am headed there next chance I get.
So wishing I was there right now. That walk looks really inviting.
Great stuff...we'll miss ya. take care!
I used to live near Yonkers. I missed all that. Who knew?

R.
I don't think I've ever uttered or written the words "I want to go to Yonkers," but I WANT TO GO TO YONKERS to play in the sculptures! Thanks for the pictures and the walk... what a nice Sunday afternoon. Rated for "Early American Dining Room." Hehe!
Dharma -- Thanks kiddo!

Cap'n -- This was all industrial development in the 20th century. Otis Elevator had a factory on the waterfront until the mid 80s.
The view of the Manhattan skyline at night is humbling.

Surly -- Guilty of shameless self promotion.

Cartouche -- I thought you'd enjoy this being an artist. Nice to see some artists getting paid for their work.

Duaneart -- Pick a nice day so you can enjoy the views.

Owl -- It was delightful today. Sunny and breezy near 80.

Fab -- Thanks a lot.

John -- This section of Yonkers is new. The rest of Yonkers is as you remember it.

C.K. -- I recommend the restaurant on the Pier. The bathrooms have the best views in the world.
Great pix! Especially from a phone. So many are against commissioned art work for a city. Some are even against donated art work. I could never get that attitude. Sarasota is like an art mecca and there is a 26' high statue of the sailor kissing the girl after WWII I think it's awesome, yet others think it should be removed and it was lent to the city for ten years! I say bring it on down and put it in my front yard!
Wonderful, thank you.
What a gorgeous day you had in Younkers. Makes me envious sitting out here on the "Left Coast"

thank you for the pictorial journey. Greco's Meditation Circle is beautiful. rAted!
Very eclectic. Beautiful views. Thank you.
Michael -- I think living in the northeast doesn't carry the prejudices about public arts that happens in the South.

sweetfeet -- glad you enjoyed it.

Walt -- Glorious day is not overstating it. Warm and low humidity for September in New York. Nothing better.

Chuck -- It's always good to see park space used by the public. That these works of art were made to be used rather than being roped off and just looked at make all the difference in the world. The interactivity of these is what I find is really cool.

Denese -- Thanks for stopping by, these are unique but fun!
I have relatives in Yonkers (see my 9/11 post for a reference to that) and Iggy grew up there. He still works there (reverse-commuting from Manhattan.) 'Though I found it too difficult (as a non-driver) to live there, during the brief period when I tried, Yonkers has her charms. Thanks for sharing those cool pictures. I'm sure at least one of extended family members is naked in Yonkers, as I write...
Great pictures. I've never been to Yonkers and I love all the artsy stuff! Thanks for sharing your afternoon with us! It looks beautiful.
oh god in heaven, i LOVE this. thank you so much. an inconsiderate close friend of mine went to manhattan and didn't take photos and didnt' share any. i grew up in boston, which made new york and teh burroughs my second home. wow, i just love all the art you shared. you probably never read my post about my Early Kindergarten Stuff but Whimsical is my middle name. thank you so much for sharing this Ahht with me!!! portland, oregon has the worst architecture i've ever seen. and one museum, it seems. i miss Aht and Whimsy and culture and, wow, a creativly styled bridge and a plague that shows you the sea!!!! jsut wow and love love love and HUGE gratitdue. i needed this today. high fever and homesickness.
What a great place to visit! I had no idea, thanks for the tour!
So nice. I have never explored Yonkers though I've lived in NYC for several years. I really had no clue to expect but now I have a better idea. Thanks for the stroll.
I believe the fish are nude, so thanks for sharing. I was not disappointed.
I lived in Yonkers 10 years ago, and I don't remember any of that!
Very nice. Like a mini-Stonehenge.
