This Sunday the 3-1 New England Patriots face the undefeated Denver Broncos. Bill Belichick, will be facing his former assistant Josh McDaniels.
Belichick has said that, "What it comes down to is that’s probably going to be overrated, overhyped, and overtalked about. In the end, it’s going to come down to who blocks who, who can get open, who can cover who, who can tackle, who can break tackles, who can throw the ball, who catches the ball, who drops it. "
"Right now, the communication is between all the people that are involved with this team trying to get ready to play our opponent. That’s the way it is every week,’’ Belichick said. “Whatever conversations going on between Josh and I or any of the coaches, I think, are really personal and I don’t think they’re for a public forum.
“I think we all have those personal relationships. That’s the way I think it should be, and that’s the way they’re going to stay.’’
Three hours later and two time zones away McDaniels speaks to the media. “I’ve had a lot of communication with our staff this week,’’ he said. “We’re working hard to try to beat them, so that’s where my focus is, and I’m sure that’s where Bill’s is as well.’’
When informed that was pretty much the same answer given by Belichick a few hours earlier, McDaniels said, “That time difference between Eastern and Mountain time is pretty interesting.’’
Sports is one the few venues where mentor and mentee can face each other. You don't usually see it in business. You might see it in the courtroom, but that's more of an invention of Hollywood. You don't usually see it in politics or academia either.
In this particular game it's not just for coaching colleagues who will be facing each other. Daniel Graham, Lonie Paxton, Le Kevin Smith, Jabar Gaffney, Russ Hochstein and LaMont Jordan are Broncos who were former Patriots.
Unlike the controversy between Belichick and former assistant Eric Mangini, there seems to be mutual respect and affection between these two men. Fortunately CBS is broadcasting this game nationally at 4:15 ET. For those who like football it should prove to be good game. For those who are students of human behavior, this may be worthwhile watching as well.

I will, of course, be rooting for the mentor as a Patriots Season Ticket holder, but I do not hold any grudges or animosity against McDaniels. May he go 15-1 and lose to us again in the playoffs.
