What do those "Wealthy Jews" do when not counting pennies?

Rate: 27 Flag

WWMSD (Mort Sahl)? For those under the age of 40 Mort Sahl was a satirist and comedian whose schtick was appearing on stage with a rolled up news paper and commenting on the headlines.

Mort who is into 80s would have loved the "Op-Ed" piece in the South Carolina Times and Democrat this past Sunday, written by two GOP county party chairman.

Here it is in its entirety:

http://thetandd.com/articles/2009/10/18/opinion/doc4ad90f14cb86e810566587.txt

The second paragraph begins, "There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves."

The two white republicans, went on to laud Senator Jim DeMint for not adding earmarks to any congressional legislation. This kinda gets lost in the shuffle as they got taken to task by a State Senator who was Jewish and was offended by the anti-Semitic stereotype.

Bamberg (Jewish name?) County Chair Edwin Merwin and Orangeburg (another Jewish name?) County Chair James Ulmer later apologized for being bigoted white SOBs their blatant anti-Semtism poor choice of words.

Senator Jim DeMint said these remarks comparing him to a Jew were "thoughtless and hurtful."

Merwin, this morning, offered this non-apology apology to anyone who was too stupid to realize it was insincere:

"At this time I wish to deeply apologize for any material included in that letter that would be considered antisemitic [sic] in any way," he wrote in an e-mail to reporters and other Republican officials.

"I have always abhored [sic] in the past, and shall continue to do so in the future, anti-semitism [sic] in any form whatsoever. I concur fully with the apology offered by my co-author, Jim Ulmer, and likewise beg that any and all who were offended will accept my deep felt apology."

Back to Mort Sahl who once said about Liberals and Conservatives, "Liberals feel unworthy of their possessions. Conservatives feel they deserve everything they've stolen."

What would Mort Sahl say?  "What would you expect from the political leaders of the state that started the Civil War?"

In other SC news, impeachment proceeding on Governor Mark "Appalachian Trail Adventure" Sanford begin next week.

Since I'm not a "wealthy Jew", I tend to feel unworthy about my possessions when I'm not counting pennies.

I've always said if you take out "Jew" and swap in "liberal" and there isn't that much difference between modern propaganda and that of Germany circa the 1930's. Seems some people have forgot to blur the line.
this makes me have lockjaw. there *are* no words for this ...
I think I'm going to start using this acronym for moments like this: WAPSS (Why Are People So Stupid?).
"Reagan won because he ran against Jimmy Carter. If he ran unopposed he would have lost." Mort Sahl.

"If a person is a practicing homosexual, they should not be teaching in our schools." Jim DeMint
I can't even say I'm shocked. I hate the false apologies more than the actualy words. You insulted your intelligence by making the comments; don't try and insult mine by offering a lame excuse.
According to Huffpost, the original quote ("old saying") about pennies did not mention Jews. That was added by the party chairman.

What's with South Carolina? Mississippi seems progressive compared to the recent goings on in SC.
ocular -- Very true

femme forte -- It leaves me almost speechless. I bet they can not understand what all the fuss is about

Tia -- a good acronym

stacey -- Great Sahl quote

gji -- You can cut the ignorance with a chainsaw.
Lea -- Backward is the only way to describe it .
I'm always amazed at how prevalent and unthinking anti-Semitic remarks still are. A lot of people really don't see the offense in the Jews + money comments they make -- especially as they see them as positive! I worked with a woman who was puzzled to be counseled for telling her employees to "jew them down" in re: some vendors.
...and so it goes.
"What would you expect from the political leaders of the state that started the Civil War?"
That say it all.

Would a snarky comment about honky, cracker, MFrs with negro lawn jockey statues and country club memberships be too out of line?
Silk -- It's said without thought as if it were a true fact. Abhorrent.

CBerg -- Thanks for reading.

Walt -- Thanks, I'm glad that comment resonated with you.

oldlefty -- Probably, but it certainly wouldn't be the "Christian" thing to do.
oh god, I'm either desensitized or something because as soon as I saw it was South Carolina, I just started laughing. I mean, why didn't those good old boys just write "we'd like to thank our money-lending, penny-pinching shyster of a Senator for learning to jew down those selfish, ear-mark seeking, pinko liberal lobbyists who are trying to grab the money for useless things like education?"
The biggest problem with racists and bigots is that they seem to be the only ones that don't realize they are racists and bigots. when someone calls them on it, they can't figure out what all the fuss is about. (see: Rush Limbaugh)
Oh, no they didn't! It's one thing to blurt something that's lurking in your subconscious, it's quite another to write this crap and then check it over for punctuation, and never notice a racial slur. But then, they see nothing wrong with it.
Wow. I guess he would try to pretend that he identified "the Jews who are wealthy" as opposed to all those who aren't, but why would he mention them in the first place?
They open their mouths and stupid falls out.
Sheesh. What is wrong with these men?
There's always this undercurrent in the South that claims, on the surface, they have changed their hearts and minds. But there is as much bigotry and racial hatred where I live (PNW) as anywhere else. What people fear, they hate. In South Carolina, in general, what people believe, they elect.
all these years since the War Between the States, and they're still trying to destroy us
maybe we should have let them leave the union
What would Mort Sahl say? You know how old you are when Mort Sahl's face comes to mind as soon as you read those words.

I was raised so far out in the sticks that I had no idea what anti-semitism meant. I didn't know my mother's boss was Jewish until years later. It just wasn't a topic. Considering that we were real country, that's saying something. It was his doing that I met Eleanor Roosevelt as a girl. I just thought he was a great boss.

Not all rednecks are racist, sexist or anti-semites. Being redneck can be an awfully weird mix of ignorance and it doesn't mean folks didn't go to college either. Not all ignorance is unintentional. Ignorance often involves a choice to remain dumb as a stump and a loud pride in being doubly stubborn about being an asshat.

"What would you expect from the political leaders of the state that started the Civil War?"

What indeed.
Nikki -- Ha, you certainly have a propensity for "reading between the lines." That's precisely what they meant.

Michael -- It's the innocence of their ignorance that incenses me to no end.

Sirenita -- Oh yes they did.

Delia -- Well said.

Zuma -- It leaps out!

Buffy -- If you ask them, apparently, nothing.

Barkinglot4 -- I used to work for a company that was headquarted in the bible belt. I felt uncomfortable when I visited headquarters when I was asked what church did I belong to, and my response was that I was Jewish. The silence that ensued was deafening.

Kathy K -- Nixon's Southern Strategy was just a continuation of the conflict.

Susanne -- I try not to classify all Southerners as racist. It is ironic, that the same beliefs are still alive after all these years. Thanks for sharing the stories of your life in your comments. I really value what you say.
Not all rednecks are Southerners. My family was originally from Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and all went West to California, where my grandfather was born before they got there.
Proof that we still have a long way to go before this country gets civilized!
As a Jew and progressive-ish sort, I say: bring it on! more of this please! So I can take it all to ______, ______, and _____, my beloved conservative family members and say see? the neo-cons and Fox aren't pro-semites!

They don't "love Israel" because they are stand-up menschen. They are cynics exploiting squishy-brained fundamentalist holylandadventureride woo-woo fantasies about Jews in long striped robes and God and Armageddon. At home, with pals, franks and beer? they tell N jokes and Jew jokes and generally fart in the general direction of anyone who can't see Celts in their family tree.
I love when you post things like this, Sheepy. A post saved, is a post earned. Unfortunately, I never learned to count my pennies before they hatched. Therein lies the problem. Love Mort Sahl.
