Taking a break, a sabbatical, a powder or whatever

Rate: 34 Flag

I've reached a point where it is harder and harder to spend time at Open Salon. Demands of my real world have overtaken the time I get to spend in my virtual world and with you.

I have about 10 posts that sit in drafts. I have to spend more efforts at work and at play, and I find the last two months of posts weren't as good as some of my earlier work.

While I like to think I hit a plateau with my writing, I tactually think it's more of an anthill.

The other challenge that I face with the limited time that I spend here is that I don't have enough time to read or comment. The volume of good writers has exponentially grown in the last year and half, and I find that I miss seeing many of my favorites, as their posts move through the feed so quickly.

I've come to appreciate many writers here, and while I have several favorites, there are many new voices that need to be heard, above mine.

So let me take a bow, thank you for your kindness and generosity in reading, rating, and commenting.

I see this post as a commencement rather than a flounce. I have nothing to be angry about and there is no one to me angry with. I've been treated very well here and I'm grateful for the opportunity. This place is a gift, and each of you are truly gifted. I wish you well and best wishes to you always.

For those of you who think this is a flounce I leave you with these words written by Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. If these guys only knew how this song could apply to Open Salon.

Hello, I must be going.
I cannot stay,
I came to say
I must be going.
I'm glad I came
but just the same
I must be going.

For my sake you must stay,
for if you go away,
you'll spoil this party
I am throwing.

I'll stay a week or two,
I'll stay the summer through,
but I am telling you,
I must be going.

Rated for your tag alone. I was wondering where you had been. It's not hard to keep up here. It's damn near impossible. Once you grasp that, you can come and go and write or read and comment as you please without feeling the obligation to do otherwise. That was the greatest lesson I learned of all. That it took me so long is another story. ;)
Come back tanned, rested, recharged.
Sheep, I hope that you come back whenever you can, and that when you do you find pleasure in it. The way to last here is in moderation, I do believe. And writing/reading when you feel the urge, not the obligation. Come back soon, even for a little while. And all the best.
Do what you must to maintain your sanity. And please occasionally, when you get the chance, share something witty with us. You don't need to read the comments or respond, we just love your writing.
All Best! Hoping for your return. r.
Enjoy your break. I hope you come back refreshed before too long. Cheers!
My dear friend, This post surprises me, in the sense that it caught me off guard. I must say that I understand completely. I have put myself on guilt trips for feeling as though I was not keeping up reading and commenting. I hope you'll stop in to visit and in the meantime I send you positive energy or prayers, whichever you prefer. My positive vibes have been known to work wonders ;) I'll be missin' ya! Julie
Going sailing? I hope this does not preclude a meet-up in the future. I'll miss you, but I'll think of you sailing and playing.
hang in there, sheepie. Come and go as you please.
can i have your drafts?

(hoping the answer is "no, OE will need them soon")
Sorry to hear it. Have a great time doing what you'll be doing.
I like your faux-flounce. Everyone needs a break once in a while. I do hope there comes a day when you return.

Lezlie
Please don't make your sabbatical permanent!
Love you Sheepie. Breaks are good. Come back fired up.
I'll miss you. Having said that I also have posts in various stages of unrest so I understand the need to slow down, or at least break.

When you rule OS instead of it ruling you it helps. Sometimes the breaks are what give you the clarity to prioritize. Tough choices, but necessary. Be well, be happy and do come back when time permits!
It was nice having you. Come back soon!
OES, we will look for your return. Take care!
hey Sheepie, come back early and often, till then, safe travel,
it is nearly impossible to keep up on here. take care of yourself and come back when you can.
I will miss you. Come back soon.
Oh, Sheepy, you know you are one of my favs. I will miss you muchos! Enjoy your life! Get out there and live it to the fullest! Don't be a stranger, however!
Well, we'll leave the light on for you, you know, just in case . . .
I hope your sabbatical is productive and rejuvenating, OES.
I'll miss you, OEsheepdog! I'll just imagine you taking it easy and sipping a summer drink with a tiny umbrella in it.
I understand. I had to take a few days off recently. Best wishes always. Relax. Eat some animal crackers. OS is a better place when you're around. [goes off whistling "Hooray for Captain Sheepdog"]
aw, sheepie, i've been missing you and now i know why. i'm having something of the same problem so get your dilemma. come around when you can and when it feels like you're having fun, not slogging through drudgery. you're a cool dude, you know.
You're the best - you deserve a break.

Just make sure it's a break.
I am seconding cartouche on this, I too have graduated, but since it was from kindergarten, I decided not to announce it. I am doing this as I can, but I have a life, obligations and kids all over right now. I have so many drafts its ridiculous. Every day I write but it doesn't get on OS because it is still in the oven. I try to visit once a day, read a few posts, respond to who have alerted me. I love what you say, what you write. Your work means something.I hope that you will be able to make some room. PM if you can to alert me and I will dutifully visit and joyfully read. Thanks for being around. R
I know exactly what you mean, sweet tart. But, like Cartouche, I'm attempting to learn not to feel so guilty - for non-creation, and for non-reading. I'm simply not able.

I'll look forward to hearing from you again. Best of luck in your endeavors. Oh, and drop me a note if you do write - since I probably won't know about it otherwise!
I've enjoyed your writing and commenting very much, but I totally understand the need to scale back. Enjoy the breather.
If there's anymore room on Cartouche's raft I'm jumping on board that one too. You'll be back. The party will always be here. Come in costume if you want, that's always fun.
I highly recommend breaks, but look forward to seeing you return. Take care friend!
What was it that "Ted Baxter" said as a eulogy: "a little song; a little dance...a little seltzer in your pants..."
While yours is not a eulogy, your wit and insights will be sorely missed. Like you, writing creatively becomes increasingly harder especially when it starts to compete with things like trying to earn a living.
Like Groucho, you're funny, Scan.
Cartouche -- I think if I gave up three things, eating, sleeping and working, I could keep up here. Thanks for the read and the rate, and for being you.

Con -- Thanks...perhaps I'll acquire some talent too.

Lea -- Moderation, ok. Thanks.
Ocular -- You comments about my writing are most appreciated.
Thanks.

Jonathan -- Don't worry, like Art Garfunkel I'll come crawling back.

Lisa -- Thanks for the smooch. Back at you.

Bike -- Thanks, I'm sure OS is like a bicycle, you never forget how to ride one.

Julie -- I'll take the positive vibes. Thanks
Kathy -- Ditto.

aim -- I will enjoy sailing and playing...the meet up will happen too.

Geoff -- You were one of the first to "friend" me. I hope to thank you in person one day.

Brian -- Drafts? No I hope to finish and publish them here.

OB -- We'll see how long I stay away. Maybe you should start a pool.

Lezlie -- See you already know I'll be back.
Steve -- It won't be...just a break.

Dr. Spud -- I have sudden urge to play baseball again, and I'm not sure why.

Sheilo -- Thanks for the understanding and support.

Steve -- I will. Thanks for the support and the feedback along the way.

Noggie -- I think I have to teach my dogs how to swim.

Rita -- You're the bomb!

Lemonpulp -- You have a gentle soul Thanks.
Bernadine -- Thank you, so much. I'll miss you too.

Lois -- You're a fine woman...hang in there.

Owl -- Thanks.

Rob -- You might not be the best dressed blogger here, but you're one of the smartest.

Eve -- You're my favorite Boston grad student. You're also the only Boston grad student I know at the moment. The other just got her doctorate.
I will miss you and be waiting for your return..
Stim -- That's the most ridiculous comment I ever hoid.

Chuck -- You're among the best.

Candace -- My heart skipped a beat when I read your comment.

Duane -- It will only be a break. If you see someone videotaping Jets training camp, it is NOT me, honest.

Sheila -- thanks I will.

Connie -- I still owe you a drink at the Campbell apartment. Let me know if you make it to NYC/

Jenn -- Thanks, that's much appreciated. Keep reporting.

GA -- It's a very rickety raft.
Skeptic -- I'll be back thanks for commenting.

Walt -- I think it was ted baxter.

Leon -- If you think I'm funny, have you looked in the mirror lately(raises eyebrows) ;).

Lunchlady2 -- Best to you always.
Good luck Sheepdog. i'll be looking for your return. Whenever that is, we'll throw you a nice, big party.
Post and comment whenever you get a chance. No pressure.
R
Sheepie, we'll still be here for better or for worse. Probably worse.
I don't know if you'll check in for comments or not, but if so, I want you to know that I will really miss you. You're on my favorites list, so if/when you reappear, I'll see and read. Best wishes to you on your break/sabbatical/powder/whatever.
Dear sheepy, this is not a flounce my friend, come around when you can, peek in every so often, but, your RealWorld is more important than this Virtual Land, but it'll still be here when you come back, the players probably be different, but that's okay too, you'll make new friends and the old ones will be here too, where we going to go? Some of us, have no lives....:D

Rated, leaves a bone at the bowl for his good friend, and a hug, and a purr.

Go now, chase the sparrows from your door step and bark at the mail man....

*TEARS*
I can appreciate the need to take extended breaks from various pursuits, like OS, because of other demands. I hope you get a bit of rest and enjoyment, too!
May the road rise to meet you
Okay, but come back to us soon...
