Where 9/11 began: Portland, Maine

Ask anyone on September 10, 2001 from what city a terror attack would launched, and Portland, Maine probably wouldn't be on their list.

However, that evening at 5:43 p.m., Mohammed Atta and Abdulaziz al-Omari checked in to the Comfort Inn at 90 Maine Mall Road less than 1000 yards from the Portland International Jetport runway just hours before their date with infamy. Atta and al-Omari had driven a rented Nissan from Boston to Maine's largest city.

They used the same ATM in South Portland, that I frequented and went to the local Wal-Mart in Scarborough, a short 10 minute drive from their motel.

The next morning they boarded the commuter flight that took them to Boston and the end of their lives.

I worked for an insurance company whose east entrance is located across from the access road to the airport. At that intersection two sets of large blue letters PWM (IATA code for Portland-Westbrook Municipal) act as a gateway to the airport.

It is likely that I could have passed the hijackers that morning. It wouldn't be inconceivable as I was early riser and liked to get to work before eight am. It also was conceivable that I looked out my window and saw their plane take off for Boston.

There was a collective response of shock and disbelief, when it became known that two of the hijackers began their mission from this small city on Casco Bay.

Reports surfaced that they barely made their flight. The staff at check had a "funny feeling" about these guys. but dismissed it. For months after the attack, the manager of the hotel where they stayed had serious mental health issues.

For months afterwards people talked about the tragedy as if in some part they were responsible for it. They were not.

As a native New Yorker living in Maine, I had a variety of feelings, none of them good.  While I didn't know anyone who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, I found I did know one of the victims of United Flight 175.

I knew Jim Roux, a 43 year old attorney, who I met when he was an aspiring politician in the early 1990s. Jim was a Bowdoin graduate and was the grandson of Independent Maine Governor James Longley.

I can't say I knew Jim well, I didn't. Just a couple of meetings, and a few hello's in passing on the streets of Portland. But his loss was a real loss for Mainers who saw one of their own perish.

The grief associated with the attacks struck many who lived in the state. I thought of World Trade Center site, where as a child had watched the demolition of the Radio Row neighborhood where the towers would be built.

In the early 1970s I went to  a job interview at Tower 2. I went to the observation deck in the 1970s shortly before I left New York for the next 35 years.

I cannot compare my sadness and grief with those who lost loved ones that day. We all lost something as Americans that day and our lives are markedly different as a result of that day. Nine years later I am back in New York, and while it's conceivable that I put my life at risk by working here, I am also well aware that an attack could happen in any city at any time and can start from a place as non-threatening as Portland, Maine.

Maine, my favourite state that brought me ocean , sand and joy.
Who knew these guys would have the audacity to do this.
Rated with hugs
Rated. Fascinating read. Suppose that "funny feeling" had been acted on? Would the whole thing unravel or merely be postponed?
Linda -- I did some research and I don't think the "experts" know why these guys drove to Portland.

Left is Right -- I don't think the plan would have been aborted that day, but who knows.
Wow, I didn't know there was a connection to Portland, Maine. Maybe they thought they'd have an easier time getting on a flight in a smaller airport. Rated.
OEsheepdog, it was a Tuesday. My brother had just landed at Raleigh-Durham airport. Knowing he was on a trip was terrifying.
There are two places in the world you never want to get lost. Maine and Kabul.

This was a great read, and it make me think about all those what ifs.
Great post. I had forgotten Portland Maine's role in this. Rated!
I knew it! Terrorists shop at Wal-Mart.

A very good reflection, OE.
That's the thing about huge events. No one really suspects a thing until they happen. After it happens, all sorts of finger-pointing takes place where people want to know why people didn't see it coming, as if knowing about it AFTER it happened is the same as knowing about it BEFORE it happened. Rated.
Ya shoulda stopped 'em, OE. Ya coulda been a hero. Damned furreignors. You musta known they were up to something unAmerican...

Fascinating story. Wasn't there a revolving restaurant near the top of one of the towers? I remember eating in one during my second visit to NYC with some friends in the mid-70s. Pretty sure they said it was the World Trade Center. I vaguely recalled this during the 9/11 nightmare, but had forgotten it until you mentioned "observation deck."
I flew from that airport some years later and didn't remember that they'd started there. It's very small (as you know of course) which makes it much more eerie to think of such great terror starting there.
sounds like a stephen king novel that came to life.eerie
Good read. I happen to love Portland. R
froggy -- I don't know and it's fruitless to speculate.

Eve -- You're a good sister.

Doug -- I agree with you about Maine; I never want to find out about Kabul.

Roger -- Thanks. It's an indelible memory for anyone living in Maine in 2001.

Stim -- There's yet another reason for not shopping there.

Duane -- I wrote another post about knowing about terrorist threats in the mid 1980s. It's in the archives.

Matt -- You must mean "Windows on the World", but I never knew it revolved.

Nelle -- They take security very seriously there since 9/11.

Poppi -- Even King would right about something as frightening as 9/11.

Sheila -- Portland's a cool place.
Great blog...Thanks sheepdog.
Best Wishes,
Blittie
Great post, OE. Evil can begin in the most peaceful of places.
We always must have a relationship to this type of tragedy, I think. I'm not being critical. I think it's a way to wrap our arms around it, and thereby perhaps clasp hands with others already there.

I lived in Peekskill, on the Hudson. When I head how they VFR's their way down the state by following the Hudson, I thought of that every day, getting on the Metro train heading for GCT. I'd stare across the beautiful blue - then turning misty, and finally gray, as the seasons changed - river, and look up. And think about those planes, down to around 700 - 1,000 feet. And I wondered. What were they thinking? When did they know? How would I feel. How would I say good bye?
Pretty sure I did eat at Windows on the World, but I think I'm confusing it with the Prudential building in Boston, which, I believe, has a revolving restaurant at the top.
The British Garden at Hanover Square honours the 67 British citizens who perished as a result of the World Trade Center tragedy. It is a day of mourning in nations around the world. People of so many nations share in America's grief.
Interesting spin on this tragedy. Small towns are great targets. Those band of idiots should have been caught. Does make it seem more personal when the tragedy hatched so near you.
actually, in one sense, 9/11 began when fdr shook hands with ibn saud. there's a reason so many saudis were on those planes.
Thanks for this. I think Connie is on to something, we all do need some way to throw our arms around a tragedy like this, some way to take it in and contextualize it so that we can 'be with' the horror of it without allowing it to be bigger in our lives than we can live with as time goes by.
Wow, I don't think I ever knew all this, really well told. But you're right, there's danger anywhere, we just have to keep moving forward.
You have an uncanny way of zeroing in on something to present the facts with a detached humanism that leaves the reader wondering and reaching his or her own conclusions. You are the Switzerland of OS!
Damn right, an attack can occur any where, any time!

Good piece. Rated, but of course!!!!!

**Leaves the dog a bone**
blittie -- Thanks

Cranky -- very true

Connie -- This is a great comment. For those of us who remember where we were when JFK or RFK were shot, it was a comfort to talk about where we were and who was with us.

Matt -- You could be right about the Pru.

Catherine -- and many who aren't Christians, too.

Dr. Spud -- It true about the personalization.

Al -- interesting.

Susanne -- Both you and Connie nailed it.

Sally -- Thanks for the kind words.

Cartouche -- I wanted to be the OS Liechtenstein, but I'll take Switzerland.
This was very interesting. Thanks for sharing it.

Yes. Who woulda thunk it? I spent many summers in Casco, Maine at summer camp. I also took flight 11 from Boston to L.A. for twenty-one years up until 9/11. It's all too bizarre that my little summer playland and my hometown was the origination of such sickness and tragedy. Thank you for this article. Unfortunately, the reality of that sad day made us all realize that even our backyard playgrounds are as dangerous as any alley in the darkest regions of the world.

It really blew me away when I first learned of Portland's role in the 9/11 debacle. I think they picked Portland because it was so unlikely.

That a plan could start "from a place as non-threatening as Portland, Maine", as you say, another surreal element to such an appalling day. It seemed to be so easy for them. Interesting piece.
