Fifteen reasons why I don't have fifteen reasons

Rate: 58 Flag

I can write fatuous posts, too, just like the published writers.

1. I have a limited degree of talent when it comes to writing. Until I achieve perfection (which will likely be when hell freezes over or the cows come home), I won't set any standards of performance for others. I know the difference between criticism and critique.

2. I am not paying for the privilege being here. If don't like a particular blog I just won't click on the link. It's just like TV, if you don't like it, change the channel.

3. I don't have a listing of books published, novels pending, agents waiting in the wings, or any prospects for any of the above. That makes me an amateur which according to one source means: a person who engages in a study, sport, or other activity for pleasure rather than for financial benefit or professional reasons.

4. I am unpretentious. See number 3. I also understand what humility is.

5. I am fortunate to have a full time job where almost 10 out of every hundred Americans who want to work don't have a job. I squeeze this reading and writing of blogs in my spare time. I don't have time for these nitpicky lists of what's right and wrong.

6. I am in awe of everyone who comes here and puts their words, thoughts and feelings out there. If their grammar is poor, they don't understand punctuation, and can't communicate, they are probably doing the best that they can.

7. There are a minority of writers in this space whose political views are different than mine. They have a right to be here and they should be treated with the same courtesy, dignity and respect  that I feel I am entitled to when I post.

8.  When it comes to talent, I know my own limitations, and I recognize and appreciate the vast majority of you who have more talent than I. I am envious, and only aspire to be as good as you are. I won't build myself up by bringing you down.

9. I have an agenda here at Open Salon. I know you are shocked to hear that. My agenda is to have my writing read. I get paid to write stuff at work. The stuff I write at work is a lot worse than the stuff I write here. Be thankful for that. I know I am.

10. I wish I had more time to read and write than I do.I don't, and do the best that I can. I would respond to comments more frequently when I have the time.

11.  There is always someone here whose talent is better than mine. That will never change.

12. If you really want my opinion ask for it. I will gladly give it to you. I won't write a separate post about you personally or you in general excoriating you for your lack of effort or talent.

13. I'm here to have fun. You should be here to have fun, too. If you're not that is unfortunate.

14.  I never write with the intention of hurting anyone's feelings. I failed with this post, I perceive.

15. I don't have reason fifteen. Why?  Because I always feel you should leave the reader wanting more.

I love lists, and yours is numbered!
"If their grammar is poor, they don't understand punctuation, and can't communicate, they are probably doing the best that they can."

Ahhhh, thanks!! I love you too sheepy!!! ;)

**Nodding** I have lots of novels pending, most of them still in my head.

I should sit down sometime and write them out.

Then get published, then, no more blogging, cause I'll be a REAL writer then, or a nose picker.

Either or, I'll be getting paid!! ;D
Perfect. Well said, and I am sure you speak for a lot of us. You do for me. R
14 were plenty. You're one of the best writers on OS. You don't need 15~~
So where were you last night when the First Responders were firing shots into the sky?
I can definitely relate to those reasons. Keep on doing what you're doing. Thanks for being here on OS.
#15 is the so true -- about any kind of writing. you manager to accomplish that sheep.
Did I forget to put Snippy at the top of my list of best amateur OS writers? I afraid to go back and look. And I no longer have my handwritten list. One of the cats made off with it. It'll probly turn up in the litter box. But you are, Snip, sweetie, you are!
Brian B -- You are always the gentleman.

Tink -- You are what your tags say you are.

Lisa -- I'm humbled by your criticism.

Dave -- I'm glad this resonated with you, but I speak only for myself.

jali -- Thanks for dropping by.

Scanner -- thanks

Myriad -- I was probably sleeping.

bike -- I will.
Oops. Well, hell, all you dogs look alike to me...no, what I meant to say...oh, I'm in some deep doo doo now...how in hell can I...oh, fogettaboutit...I can't. Still not fully awake? Hey, how's this: Snip and OE were at the top of my list of best OS amateur writers - my handwritten list, that is, and a cat ate it. Love you both. Hugs, etc.
Cindy -- Thanks. I respect and admire you, too.

Matt -- I know all dogs look alike. No offense taken.
thank you
this post has been the voice of reason amidst all this nonsense
#10 and #11. perfect.

Hell, they're all perfect.
I heart blogging! xox
This goes well with my coffee this morning as I sit here nodding my head in agreement Sheepie.
Looks like a riot broke out in this place last night. Glad I missed it.
Well reasoned. And thanks for your lovely comment on my most recent. You sir, are (and have always been) a loyal friend.
"O cool glad pasture; living tree, tall corn,
Great cliff, or languid sloping sand, cold sea,
Waves: river curving; you, eternal flowers,
Give me content, while I can think of you:
Give me your living breath!
Back to your rampart, Death! "
Harold Monro - 1879-1932

This could be the best post that I have seen on these pages in a long time. Completely true, all 15 (in a whisper) except number 9, because my clients wouldn't want me to say that my hobby-writing is better than the work that I do for them. Thanks for speaking on behalf of the sane.
your #14 says everything about you. and about most of the people whose blogs here i rarely miss. thanks for the sanity, sheepie.
The Sheepdog is alright! Good list...
Wonderfully written!
These were excellent reasons. This is the club I want to be in.
I've away from OS, so I'm not sure what this is about, but I have a feeling it is in response to another professional writer vs. amateur writer dust-up.

All I can say is writer what you want and damn the torpedoes!
Correction: "...is write what you want and damn the torpedoes."
OS really seems to be in a pissy mood lately. The post for which this is a response just defies description. I thought to criticize the photo as a rebuttal example, but thought better of it and did not. It's bad enough when discussion turns nasty about subjects like abortion or war or religion, but this seems so completely unnecessary. Top it off with the fact that the cowardly lunatic (Random)Fett agrees with it. That just about says it all.
You are here, writing and reading, and that is the only reason you need, to be writing about reading. Glad to see your furry face.
Wanna go back to The Frying Pan, with Frank, and discuss the 15th reason?
Writing is not easy and I believe we should all be encouraging each other. About grammar and punctuation--even though I was an English teacher, I know that rules are meant to be broken. Look at e. e. cummings, James Joyce, and many others. Thanks for this level-headed post about the subject.
My sentiments, exactly! Well, except number 5. I'm not employed, and I haven't been for so long I don't even care anymore!

Lezlie
A refreshing list, OE sheepdog,
People forget the importance of number four which I guess happens when there is no humility. I am in the same situation (#5) though I confess I have been late for work because of OS more than a few times.

And yes, there is always someone better (and worse) in most pursuits. All we can do is discover our own original voice to the best of our ability.
vanessa -- Just one of many voices here.

AHP -- Thanks.

Robin - xoxo

Mission -- I think I understand what Ms. Kelly was trying to say. It wasn't her best work.

Cartouche -- I appreciate your friendship.

fusuna -- Wonderful verse. Thanks for sharing.

Andy -- nothing creative about writing in my day job.

femme forte --thanks.

Bonnie -- thanks.

Linnn -- It is a fair list

patriciak -- It was ok.

greenheron -- Thanks, right back at you.

Trudge -- Ms. Kelly's Blog from yesterday.

Chuck -- Thanks

Bill -- I try not to let this get me down.

OB -woof

Lea -- Raincheck until it's warmer, ok?

mary -- Common sense is a good thing.

Ardee -- you're welcome.

L -- thanks/
Every time I see your lovely avatar I think of what, to me, is one of your finest posts - your descriptions of the people on your commuter train. In fact, the last time I took Metro North, I thought of you. If you can write something that indelible, you have a great talent. Plus, you're a great support on OS!
Woof!!

(*.........er........meow? Whatever works.....*)

.
I'm with you OE. You put the perspective in this little exercise that's been going on for the last day or so. Thanks.
As I read this, the word that kept coming to mind was: gracious. You, sir, are a prince among men. I've always believed that about you, but this post just underscores that fact so nicely.
Two more things and I'll be on my way.
1) You are someone whose writing I enjoy and respect.
2) I always feel I've hit a home run when something I've written gets a comment by you. (No, that's not a shameless plea for comments from you - just the bare truth.)
Nicely done, this.
Rated, of course.
6 & 14 are my favorites- go Shep!
(speaking as one of the just above illiterate, corrections --by pm, please don't stick me with hot knives in public-- are welcome and help me to learn)
Great post. I know why I like to read you!
Excellent list -- you're a writer worth coming back to no many how many reasons... : )
Sheepie, these thoughts are profound and well-expressed and I am a sucker for self-deprecating humor. You rock.
OE, you were one of my first favorites here and you have been a steady, wonderful presence ever since then. Every time my feed shows that you have something up, it is like finding a present in the mail.

The arts can be corrupted, just as any other business. Painters have to fight uphill against the arts mafia of art school DTF* talentless hacks. Musicians have to work through minefields of treachery and craziness. It goes on and on as every institution of art becomes an institution of cronyism, self promotion and favoritism.

Writing is no different.

Leave it to OE to be the voice of exquisite and unassailable reason.

Zumapick and hugs.

*Daddy's trust fund artists
Sheepie, you're a hell of a lot better than you give yourself credit for.
This is a very ordinary post, and it doesn't meet my high standards, so I'm trying real hard to forget I read it. But seriously folks ...

As I said on Snippy's post:

For me it's real simple, I take criticisms of my writing to heart only when someone is paying me for it. When you get something for free, don't bitch -- or bite the hand that's feeding you -- or casting pearls before you swine -- and above all, never resort to using cliches.
I am stalking Tom. (hugging TC's leg)
OE- scratch behind your ears, and your right hip
Major internet problems here today and only one computer working. NO satellite TV. The world is going to hell as we speak..:)
Sorry I am late..
rated with hugs
(place superlative comment here) :)
Glad I found this. I guess we were on the same wavelength last night. You have a good head on your, er, body.
Janie -- You will always have a special place in my heart.
15 made me spew my herbal tea.
One minor correction, if I may. You said "I am fortunate to have a full time job where almost 10 out of every hundred Americans who want to work don't have a job."

I think it's more like 1 in 10. Try to be more accurate, please.
God had an agenda. Why not you? The only difference: he got no blog.
Somehow I missed this the other night. Funny and trenchant as always.
