Beth Mann's OC - My Seven Surprises of things I like

Rate: 18 Flag

A little late to the game with these. Number seven happened yesterday so I thought I better post this while it's still fresh in my mind.

Brussel Sprouts

I always hated Broccoli, and never tried Brussel Sprouts. They have an extremely bad rep. They are now my favorite vegetable, and I love them roasted or sauteed. They are not bad for you either.

Living in New England

As a born and bred New Yorker, I never thought I would want to live anywhere else. But after high school, I went to college in New England and lived there for 35 years. I returned to New York in 2008 where I work and I now live in Connecticut, which according to maps is still in New England. Many view Connecticut as New York City's sixth borough, however.

Classical Music

My third grade teacher, Mrs. Reiser took us on a class field trip to Carnegie Hall where we met Aaron Copeland, the composer, and a personal friend of Mrs. Reiser. While most of my classmates got Mr. Copeland autograph, I passed. I discovered classical music in my twenties and ironically enough, Copeland's music is among my favorites.

Facebook

I can't believe I resisted Facebook for as long as I did. It is an interesting place, I enjoy the interactions with all my facebook friends. I can't say for sure that the feeling is mutual.

Writing and developing a following (of sorts)

I sort of feel I am the Alex Rieger of Open Salon. While there are many talented individual who consider themselves writers, I use this place as an experiment. I get to do stuff here, I could never do at work. Many people seem to enjoy reading what I have to say, and that is a big surprise. I've met some of the writers here, and they are as genuine as their cyber personas. As for me, who knows? I'm just an amateur with a regular day job.

Being viewed by others as a leader where I work.

I have people who reach out to me and ask my opinion on a number of subjects. I do more listening than I do talking. I'm surprised people view me this way. I enjoy being valued for what I know rather than being just another pretty face.

godaddy.com

I've watched the insufferable Super Bowl TV ads, but when my wife needed to get a domain name for her new business, a friend recommended this firm. I was really skeptical. However, we got exceptional customer service, and our negotiation fee refunded, because they felt they did no negotiation with on our behalf because the domain owner, refused to negotiate. Their service team got us a dot.co domain name for a very reasonable price. This was a real surprise. Perhaps they should go with a new ad agency.

Well, Mr. Rieger, I always enjoy reading what's on your mind, and I'm a Copeland fan too. As for Facebook, I knew I was hooked when I spent a Sunday night there chatting live about the Pats/Jets game with you. (Can I wipe that game out of my memory?)
Very interesting. We have several things in common, amazing, actually.
Cranky -- I can't let that happen.

Sheila -- Who knew?
Classical music is a good pick. During my folk & rock and nothing but folk & rock (oh, and Camelot & West Side Story) teens, I shunned it despite actually enjoying popular buts like The Nutcracker and Peter & the Wolf. So it was a relief when I allowed myself to like it again in my 20s.
My mom was a church organist. I was introduced to Bach before I learned how to tune in a radio station. After a 40-year avoidance following the last time I choked one down, I recently had sauteed brussel sprouts. I didn't want to admit it, but they were good.
My classical music appreciation has been down, up and down. Last time it was up I got clubbed on the head at a Virginia Symphony concert when I accidentally clapped between movements. Con Chapman was working security that nite and pepper sprayed me in the nose before whacking me several times with his flashlight. My attorneys are studying film of the incident with an eye toward defending me from the Symphony's likely lawsuit for my breach of propriety. They think we can win, but I shall never hear Tchaikovsky again with quite the same secret sense of misunderstanding.

I've liked Brussels sprouts ever since my mother told me they were little cabbages. Not that I was overly fond of cabbages (I am now) so I'm thinking it was the "little" that seduced me. I was a "different" sort of child.
I was good until godaddy. Insufferable douches they are!

Otherwise, yay for brussel sprouts.
So many people are mentioning Brussels sprouts. Though I do agree with you about Facebook. Nice list.
OEsheepdog, I am totally impressed that you were able to meet Aaron Copeland and I also like his work a lot. Appalachian Spring was the first piece I heard of his on a classical FM station in high school days and I was hooked after that. New England is a great place to live and while I do not live in New England, it would be my choice after NY. The rest of your surprises look like a well rounded group and I will add that I like Brussel sprouts, too!
Like broccoli in small doses, but nyet on brussel sprouts. Maybe heavily curried... Have a Go-Daddy domain and someone else did the purchasing, etc., so I have had no personal interaction with them. HOWEVER, I keep getting annoying emails offering special deals alla time. I'm surprised I quite enjoy FB - like many here, I was initially resistant.
Love Copeland...and Bartok and Ravel. Try them out for size.
I make the most delicious roasted Brussel sprouts with onions and bacon. And I'm glad you like facebook. I never thought I'd like it either, but I do.~r
I'm so glad you discovered there is no similarity between broccoli and Brussels sprouts. I love them both. Classical music was a big surprise to me, as well.

Lezlie
so you're pretty, too? :-)
Your choices are very empowered. I like it. You sense YOUR sense of self-worth. Good thing. And I like your last one - interesting. I'm always surprised when I find a company that provides me exemplary customer service.
Abrawang -- My first exposure to Classical was Music Appreciation class which sardonically referred to as Music Depreciation. I'm in a different place today.

Stim -- Church organist? Did she like tulips on her organ?

Jane -- I'm just a cab driver.

CM -- Pepper spray is a food product.

Linnn -- Godaddy's customer experience was the antipathy of their commercials...I kid you not. My wife said that the staff never makes non-tech people feel like they're fools.

Mary -- Facebook was a big surprise.

John -- With all the people you and grandfather knew, it feels pretty damn good to make you a little chartreuse with envy. Thanks.

Myriad -- I agree with you on Facebook.

Elizabeth -- Those are favorites, too. Joe Green (Giuseppe Verdi) ain't bad either.

Joan -- I bet that tastes good.

Sandra -- How delightful to see you...I wish I could rate comments.

Beth -- So glad you stopped by. You give good comment. Your last surprise was also interesting....if I may say.
Very interesting list! I like brussels sprouts, too!

But for heaven's sake, it's Aaron Copland. Handy to know when you're buying his digital music at Amazon, or downloading it for a free 2 weeks from the local library!
