Hacks to the right of me, hacks to the left of me.

Rate: 18 Flag

Once doesn't have to look far to find hacks. They seem to be everywhere. The hacks I chose all have the same thing in common. Nepotism. None of them I could find would even have a job in the media if their last name was different than their famous parents. In fact, they would sink into obscurity faster than the Titanic sank into the Atlantic on that cold April morning, ninety-nine years ago.

Here's my list:

William Kristol: The man who is right of Genghis Khan but is never right. If little Billy's last name was Klein or Steinberg, he couldn't get a job sweeping a newsroom floor, much less be a pundit. Thank goodness his dad was Irving Kristol otherwise, Billy would have to work for a living.

Luke Russert: Without the death of his famous father, Tim Russert, Luke would be a second rate reporter at a third rate TV station.

Megan McCain -- Who annointed Megan a spokesperson anyway? My friends, if Megan's last name was Hensley, she might be working for her mother's beer distributorship.

Chelsea Clinton -- Her position with NBC is absolute flummery. Mom and Dad are famous. Isn't that enough?

Liz Cheney -- If you major qualification for being a pundit is that your father was Vice President, then Liz is qualified. I would have thought that you might need to have more skills than that.

You could add the offspring of other pols to this list: Cokie Roberts, Jenna Bush, Bristol Palin.

But enough nepotism. How many talented journalists are out there who deserve a shot based upon their knowledge, skills and abilities who won't get a chance because, their parents weren't pols or celebrities? The answer: Lots.

Sad but true. So often it comes down to who you know and who your parents are. I like Chelsea, but when I heard she was joining the ranks of so-called journalists, I wondered why. Was that even her major in college? ~r
Tis the times we live in Sheepy. We are a nation governed by hacks for the benifit of hacks with the power of name recognition who tell us what to think, what to eat, what to wear and, most importantly, how to spend our money so that other hacks make a living.
oops, for some reason my ratings didn't take so here I am again. Sorry about that.
You forgot? How about Kerry Lauderman?

He reminds me of a homeless war veteran.
He warms up with Jacob Freeze in a library.
Jacob F. (respect) reads`Grapes of Wrath.
Yes! Others may not see them as hacks but I have often wondered if people like Maria Shriver, Andrea Mitchell and Anderson Cooper didn't get their jobs because of their good connections.
Yeah, but Cokie Roberts isn't a hack.
And there's Ron Reagan at MSNBC. Guess the idea of paying one's dues, working one's way up, doesn't apply anymore.
Joan -- When I saw Chelsea's appointment to NBC, I was extremely disappointed.

Torman -- I agree.

Art -- Who is he related to?

Miguela -- I think they all are hacks. The nepotism issue doesn't matter whatever your party affiliation.

Mumbletypeg -- She is so beltway establishment now, she has become a hack. I respectfully agree to disagree with you.

Jerry -- The one percent has their own set of rules.
That's a pretty broad brush. And a little unfair to the ones that actually do a good job. Connections have always played a roll throughout the workforce (think Sanford and Sons), and will continue to. It may seem unfair to us no-names, but I don't begrudge the ones that work hard, take it seriously, and actually learn and display the needed skills. It's not all of them, but it is some.

Are any of these print journos? No? Then I couldn't care less about them.
Most interesting list. It's not only who you know but perhaps more importantly, who knows you. Or your famous/rich parents.
Continuing as the only Patriots fan I like, this was spot on. PLUS, the incredibly surprising and perfect use of the word "flummery".
Feudalism is alive and well in America (and elsewhere) today!

We practice entitlement by birth rather than by merit. That a few of them might actually be qualified for their positions is irrelevant. They DID NOT come up through the ranks in open competition for their positions. They "got there" by means other than merit.

Good blog, sir sheepdog!
.
Getting ahead because of connections is just part of the human condition. Not that that confers any measure of desert, and good on you for calling them out. As to whether they're hacks, that would depend on the quality of their work and for some, like Chelsea & Luke, I haven't seen enough to judge.
Oh, dear. I admit, I haven't listened to her since the 90s, when she was good.
Ian Fleming once wrote, "Nothing propinqs like propinquity." Just how is it that Luke Russert, Chelsea Clinton, or Jenna Bush got that great job?
Oh deer, I admit. I jest guessed. apology.

He may not be related to Jacob Freeze.

Maybe he has a nephew from China.

He tutor readers to act like chutzpah.

He's shameless. He is an adult? Talk?

When will he give me Gold-Star refund?

If he don't peep on my site then who do?

Michelle Obama? No. Eric Holder? No.

I no bother to research Kerry's family tree.
Good to know. So glad I quit watching TV 25 years ago. Hacks are SO easy to ignore.

My kids had a couple friends who planned to be "journalists." What did they mean by that? They wanted to be talking heads. They couldn't write their way out of a plastic bag. The days of Cronkite are over.
And they cover the Kennedys and the Bushes--the circle is complete.
I don't know which is worse: the quality of the reporting or the knowledge that they are living up to their bosses' expectations. Local news is a perfectly good farm team for the truly dedicated. "Q" is not the talent you want in a newsperson.
In defense now of Chelsea, she has a very impressive education, of obviously name helps a lot too. Marketing is part of this, as we like things we know, if, there are people who get lost in the switches I'm sure all the time too, because of us, partly.
