Take your pick, but this was anything but a slow news week. In the midwest, thousands are recovering from devastating Tornadoes. There have been deaths, and after a survey of the damage, the cost in physical damage will be in the millions, and the cost in human suffering can't be measured in dollars.
In U.S. politics, the Chief Federal Judge in Montana, Richard Cebull, sends a racist email about the President of the United States, and make politically motivated comments to his email addressees. This not only violates good judgment and common sense (never put anything in an email that you don't want read on the front page of the New York Times) but he quite possibly violated the Code of Conduct for United States Judges. For this act he sends the President, a non-apology apology.
I won't go into the whole Rush Limbaugh controversy, other than say that perhaps we're seeing the beginning of the decline and fall of this drug addled megaphone for hatred and abuse. Still haven't seen the headline "Limbaugh turns deaf ear to criticism," but a man can hope. To paraphrase the old metaphor about an opera finale, it isn't over until the fat man resigns.
It has to be really tough for a man with a college degree and two master's degrees to come out against a college education, but Rick Santorum does so masterfully. It must be that being dunned for donations from three different alumni associations after you've become a high paid
prostitute lobbyist just is intolerable. As we all know the bible tells us Intolerance begets Intolerance. There was a lot of begetting in the Bible.
I feel really bad for Olympia Snowe who announced she wouldn't be
able to survive a primary challenge from the right wing extremists who control the Maine Republican Party running for re-election because apparently Democrats in the Senate are too partisan. This is the same Olympia Snowe that wouldn't fight to save two military installations in Maine from being closed while her husband was Governor of Maine and George H.W. Bush was president and maintained a summer residence there. Her definition of centrist is give 90% of what the conservatives want to the conservatives. I voted for her zero times during the 22 years I lived in Maine. Good riddance. Remember she didn't want to rush into health care reform either.
Finally, I would like to see some severe penalties for the latest scandal in the NFL. No Bill Belichick, had nothing to do with it. But the New Orleans Saints coaching staff and players have to answer for their bounty program on intentionally injuring players and paying cash bonuses to the players who caused the injuries. I would think that this is more serious than videotaping your opponents, but perhaps, I am old fashioned that way.
I could get into happenings around the world in this space, but that would only depress you.
