My pick for Man on Top is a little Weir...

Rate: 8 Flag

I confess I do not find Russell Brand at all appealing.  He is sort of... icky.  To me.

When I thought about who I would choose among 2010's most beautiful, unique, and mesmerizing men of pop culture only one person (other than my husband who fits the bill other than not being an icon), one person came to mind immediately.  And that is the one-of-a-kind, talented, amazing Johnny Weir.

I don't much care for most sports -- the best I typically do is a little NBA from time to time.  But when I saw Johnny Weir in the last winter Olympics, I was awestruck.  His performace, unlike anything I've ever seen on ice skates, was so beautiful and brave and intense that I somehow still remember it and feel affected by it.  Although he wound up coming in only 6th, I felt his was the stand-out performance.

And, in the days that followed, I still found myself fascinated with him.  I discovered that aside from being wildly talented, he is also an interesting and articulate character off the ice.

Okay, maybe I'm not so into the fur
All that and brains, too.

Take this gem:
"For me, I'm lucky that I've traveled so much of the world and seen so many things and for me, masculinity is completely subjective," Weir says. "Here, a male ballet dancer would get beat up and left on the side of the road. But in Russia, he is No. 1, he is what a man is. That kind of passion and control. In Japan, masculinity is making sure your hair is completely gelled and coiffed and that you're dressed and decked to the nines. Masculinity is what you make it out to be. Here in the U.S., not everyone feels the same way."
(from this article by Jim Caple -- not exactly hard-hitting, but a fun read.)

I could do that

He's graceful, he's strong, he's creative, he's truly gorgeous, and he says amazing things like "I want to be myself until the day I die" (Yahoo! Sports).  That's why Johnny Weir is on my "Man On Top" list this year.

(Okay, I don't really have that list.  But if I did, he would be Number 1.)

I can appreciate your choice. He's a courageous, true-to-himself character--he is way outside the bell curve, which I love. Excellent!
I share your admiration for Johnny. He is so comfortable in his eccentric skin, it just makes me happy.

He was really great getting outfittted on an episode of "The Rachel Zoe Project." I loved it when Brad said "Next to him I'M masculine -- and that's just wrong."
Have you ever seen his exhibition piece to Lady Gaga's "Poker Face"? It's quintessential Johnny: sequins, make-up, attitude and, of course, really nifty skating. Here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_G5tntpUeI

And then there's this threesome he did with Melissa Gregory and Denis Pethukov called "Fallen Angels": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIhB-My2_KE&feature=related. It's the other side of Johnny: classical, balletic, ethereal.

Rated by a fellow Weir fan from waaaaay back.
Isn't prejudice a funny thing? Johnny is someones' man of the year. Bravo.
I saw him when he visit my country to performace with Yu-na Kim.
He is absolutely good skater. Idon't understand why he doesn't come to Korea any more. Here are lots of fan of him!
Glad to see Johnny at a non-skating site. He is a completely unique and talented individual. And luckily for us, he is a judge on Skating with the Stars, starting Monday night. Be there and enjoy the inevitable Johnny witticisms. If you watched Be Good Johnny Weir, you know how funny he can be.
He is a very interesting individual. "Individual" being the operative word here, Weir embraces this with a full heart and spirit, a load of talent and an extremely bright mind.
Intersting choice. I agree with you on Russel Brand. He is awful and I'm so baffled by his fame etc.
He is fabulous, and a great guy. A true artist. I love his Poker Face routine.
