HERMAN CAIN: Man of the Tea Party

Rate: 11 Flag

Herman Cain is certainly a phenomenon.  Back in the bad old days of 1984, the presidency of Gary Hart was torpedoed just by having a picture taken of Donna Rice sitting on his lap.  Of course, Hart set the situation up by challenging reporters to follow him around relentlessly because "he had nothing to hide." When we go back even further, we see the American public pretty much totally in the  dark about the sexual dalliances of FDR, Ike, JFK, and LBJ.

Fast forward to 1992, and we saw America's interest in potential president's sex lives begin to change.  Bill Clinton famously dodged the issue of whether he had sexual encounters with Jennifer Flowers, while apparently no one paid attention to the long term attentions that George H.W. Bush paid to Jennifer Fitzgerald.  Of course, the GOP later initiated impeachment proceeding for the blow jobs that occurred between Bill and Monica Lewinsky.  But wink, wink, nudge, nudge -- the House of Representatives voted to impeach Clinton for perjury and not infidelity to Hillary.

Almost twenty years later, the American public is treated to the circus that is Herman Cain.  In many quarters, Cain appears to have continuing support of a sizeable percentage of GOP voters despite a rapid drop off of support from Republican women.  Cain continues to talk tough. Clint Eastwood hasn't publicly retracted his support of him.  And most of all, Herman appears to be the continued darling of the Tea Party.  Why is this?

I think it's because Cain really conforms most closely to the belief structures of the Tea Party members.  Let's check off the list of what I think those personal qualities are of candidate and supporters:

Cain is a very successful businessman, being close to the ideal of what Tea Partiers would like to see happen to themselves.

Cain appears to have unlimited self-confidence, projecting the public persona of what Tea Parties  would like to see for themselves both publicly and privately.

Cain says many bad things about blacks, poor and homeless people.  People who don't have a job are just lazy. The jobs are out there.  Go and pick fruit for a living if you need to.  Mexicans are trying to destroy the country.  Most black people are shiftless and lazy. They think they have some kind of entitlement coming to them.  If you're poor, it's your own fault.  I beat the odds, why can't you?

Cain appears to really believe that there's no such thing as sexual harassment.  Women are just cruising to make money from sexual harassment lawsuits.  What do those bitches want anyway?  And I know that in my position of power and influence, bitches want nothing more than to suck my cock.

Cain demonstrates an ignorance of facts and what might pass for reality if he had the time to actually study the situation.  But don't we all know that your character and self-confidence are more important than responding to things the way they really are? You can conquer anything at any time if you have the right attitude.  (Go back to blacks, poor, etc. statement.)

Cain ignores the huge financial support that he's gotten from the Koch brothers. The power and influence of  superwealth in this country is just a mirage, as we all live in a democracy. Encourage more and more for less and less -- less and less for more and more.

Some things are okay, but overall -- not a pretty picture, is it?

anyway, it's your picture. he has a different one, no doubt. romney is cruisin', and might have a chance at obama. be kind to mitt, he's another minority figure about to be accepted into the mainstream of america: presidential timber.
I think he got into the race for Trumpian reasons, that is to sell a book, get famous and make some money along the way. Now his polls have gone to his head and he'd riding the tide so long as it lasts. I can't remember if I mentioned this on your blog but The Economist's headline for his economic plan was Dial 9-9-9- for Nonsense.
I think you've gotten it right. Herman Cain reminds me a lot of George W. Bush in blackface. The electorate seems to prefer bravado to coherence, so I worry. Personally, the man is an embarrassment.

I’ve heard that Americans tell their children that “anybody can grow up to become the president.”

Looks like it’s true.....
.
George W. Bush never stepped out on Laura, to my knowledge. It wasn't the next door neighbor or political groupies that were getting screwed, it was the country. I'm sorry, but I prefer things the other way around - I vote because of what's done to and for us, that's what I think is germane to the office.

It's not that a lack of sexual ethics doesn't disturb me, it's that I think there's a bigger priority involved. I've never been anything but faithful and I've been married a long time; however, so many important public figures (and, quite frankly, so many of my friends over time) have strayed that I think eliminating that category from public life leaves us with leftovers that are simply too skimpy to be acceptable.

That being said: The problem with the allegations against Cain is not what they indicate about fidelity, it's what they indicate about power. These allegations involve the pressure of power for sex. That isn't acceptable, and sex is more the symptom than the reason. This is of a piece with the analysis that says that rape is more about being a violence crime than a sex crime. Does that make sense to you?
"Clint Eastwood hasn't publicly retracted his support of him. " Say it ain't so!

Yes, Cain is the embodiment of the Tea Party -- rude, ignorant, self-centered, uncaring, selfish, boastful, arrogant, pitiless, tasteless -- all of which makes him irresistible to those who imagine they, too, could be rich and successful if only govt would get out of their way.

Meanwhile, they (or their children and grandchildren) attend govt schools, drive on govt roads, are protected by govt police and fire depts and govt armed forces, the EPA, the SEC (supposedly), the NIH and the CDC -- I could go on, but I think I've made my point.

Unfortunately, that point will be completely lost on those who foolishly believe Herman Cain warrants consideration for anything other than the token candidate of the barely-closeted racist party.
He's a big time recipient support from the Kochs (pronounced "coke"). But the Koch-Cain Campaign ain't ready to go up in smoke. In the meantime, Herman's big pimpin' the white supremacy of the T-federacy Party while he and Conservatives raise millions from "high tech raping" women who come forward against their sexual misconduct just like they "high tech raped" Anita Hill when she came forward. It's the "omerta" code of the mafia at work as they "rightwing rape America."
The tea baggers love Herman Cain because a) He is super smug, I mean I thought Bush was smug; and b) He is proud of his ignorance. He is the poster boy for anti-intellectualism. He makes them feel even better about themselves than Bush ever did. Check out his NY-mack hat, it speaks volumes of him and his supporters. Excellent post. R
"People who don't have a job are just lazy. The jobs are out there. Go and pick fruit for a living if you need to. Mexicans are trying to destroy the country. Sounds like a summation of where modern conservatism is at. It's no surprise a specimen like Cain is where he is; he personifies Tea Party values, reflects them back on the faithful base so they feel vindicated in their beliefs, and as a bonus for those undecided voters out there who don't know which side of the fence to fall on in 2012, he illustrates perfectly the meanness and hypocrisy in those values.
