Well, the game has already begun. The forces of darkness are getting together to gather their strength to take down Occupy Eugene. You can see it in the local paper. City costs mount for local OWS. Supposedly, the dastardly OE folks cost over $115,000 in hard-earned taxpayers' money to fund the hijinxs of Occupy's encampment in the miserable Oregon weather. In the fine print, it tells you that that totalled about $105,000 for police protection for the protests. They don't tell you that the cops incur that much cost when they cover an Oregon Ducks game.
But the forces of darkness are determined to be invisible for now. The community mediation service (hippies) has put together yet another group grope for the Occupys. And like a good soldier that I am -- I call the Tea Party boys with an ALL HANDS ON DECK announcement. I am old new lefty, and I am a pest as new old righty. I am a spy on the tea party. And of course, being the chickens that they are, they don't show one redneck face at the touchy-feely being held in Harris Hall tonight.
Eugene politics -- it's disgusting! If you have never watched the TV show, Portlandia, I strongly urge you to do so. You'll find 43 or 69 characters, all of whom are really from Eugene! That's where all of the people of the City of Portland come from!
At a meeting of 250 people, there was only only only one silent observer who was against Occupy Wall Street. He was a local Tea Party nabob, but he was a cigar store indian. They are chickens, and they're going to keep their big, fat, stupid mouths shut for the time being. But it was me -- old new lefty (or new old righty) -- who had the nerve to put on my evil bureaucrat's hat to play the role of devil's advocate. I hate Occupy Wall Street.
The way I acted as devil's advocate was very clever. As the laywers say,"Argue the law when the law is on your side." I said that the reason why OWS is having city problems right now is because of legality. The vast majority of most problems that the OWS movement is having right now are because of city rules and regulations, not to mention the law. All I had to do to channel was to channel the mindset of the average bureaucrat.
It's violating regulations. The city council enacted these regulations, and it's my duty to enforce the regulations. It's my job. If I'm not enforcing the regulations.... But people from the audience clarified that the situation on the ground could change for me if the city council was to just mellow ou and let the OWS camp stay it out in the freezing rain and snow.
I've drafted an op-ed piece to be submitted to my local paper supporting the local OWS movement. You need to do the same kind of thing in your community. Believe me. Camping out anywhere at this time of year is hellacious. But from listening to what the people were saying tonight, the OWS movement has been a transformative moment for perhaps hundreds of thousands of homeless people all over America and all over the world. These encampments have been developing their own communities in opposition to the 1%, and in the process of keeping intelligent, capable homeless people fed and kept warm -- they've managed to develop a sense of community between the activists and the homeless. Ladies and gentlemen, we've just received a paradigm shift. You need to donate everything you can to your local Occupy movement campsite. Not only is it the Christian (or whatever) thing to do, but this is part of the revolution.
The same thing is happening everywhere-- all over the world.OCCUPY WALL STREET

If...the campers are working to fill the gap by helping the less able...occupation triples its value ...and deserves support. It can be a leaderless movement - doing what the leaders fail to do - and thus earn street cred as well as positive press.
I read a lot of posts about how the ill and the homeless were detracting from the economic objectives of OWS - how they were a problem in the camps - well, finding creative solutions to problems created by bad policy and bad medicine - is heroic, and will eventually be supported with government resoucrces if we demand it. This has been done - but it takes time and thinking people - working together - with a common vision.
I think, this is where the OCCupy movement could make its bones, occupy public space, earn public support, and serve those most needing help.
Great post - and great leadership - here and in the field!
