Ablebodied men: Downton Abbey vs Battlestar Galactica!

Rate: 16 Flag

Sounds like a crazy matchup, but it can only happen in the multiverse that is my brain.  However, I know there are fans that are crazier than me, know more stuff, dieharder, and diligent.  I was feeling like I was getting sucked into the Downton Abbyss, this last week, watching so many episodes- and related specials.  Then I saw this funny clip from Portlandia, which is even more relevant as I am about 2/3 of the way through Season 3 of Battlestar.  Why am I so late to the game?  It doesn't matter, the show is fracking awesome, and it helps me slog through knitting and bicycling, time goes by so much faster. An episode a day makes the back pain go away.

As I have not seen every and all episode, nor visited any fan pages, please don't give too many spoilers.  However, the open call nature of this, here in comments or on your own blog (please post a link) is to make your own comparisons or expand on one here.  I will just give some highlights.

1) The home is an organism, and every role in it is important!

Downton Abbey could not run without the servants, and the servants wouldn't have direction or a role without the house.  They cannot really survive without each other.

Battlestar Galactica (ship) and the rest of the fleet.   Obvious, plus jumping.

2) I love a man in uniform!   Ruling class vs working class, politicians, officers, and the rest of us.

Write an essay on your favorite uniform wearer.  Corsets and bibs apply.

3) Honor, duty and your job.

Well, we see a lot of the constraints in both shows, personal freedom hits the ugly head of what you have to do.  Repercussions are serious when lines are crossed.

4)  Love triangle with the handsome, inadvertant hero.

Matthew, Mary and Lavinia.

Starbuck, Apollo and Dualla.

5) Love suppressed in the name of duty

Mr Bates and Anna

Adama and Laura Roslin

6) War.

Cylons vs Germans

7) Forbidden love

Lady Sybil and Branson

Agathon and Sharon

8) Wild old lady who gets the best lines and steals every scene

Countess Violet Crawley

???

 9) Breaking up aristocracy is hard to do!

Socialist revolution vs capitalism vs martial law, who runs the show?

10) All I want is a room somewhere....

The individual desire for love and hope.... does anyone not dream of their own little place- in the village serving beer or in a cabin by a lake or on the side of the ship far away from the engines?

****

I offer this as an alternative Valentine, to those who love and who are loved, who also don't want to write about hearts and flowers.

I am pretty sure you guys have some of your own opinions on this.  There are reasons why these shows are so damn popular, so mindstirring, so emotionally wringing.  Please, carry on and write already.

I've not seen Downton, but I will now. Thanks for the heads up. R
I haven't watch this show at all.

We are right now, in the process of discovering via netflix that storage locker show...STORAGE WARS. I LOVE discovering shows every one else watched two years ago. Like The Office. We didn't watch it until last year and then we went through all the episodes in a matter of weeks. LOVE it.

I'm sure we'll get to BG at some point if it's that good. Enjoy and happy V day!
Where have I been? I've never heard of it and the clip was great. I now have to watch it, and it's all your fault. Happy V Day~~
Love, love, love Downton Abbey. I must do some thinking on this.
I know. I'm addicted to Downton, as well. I'm pretty sure in my former life, I was the Countess Violet Crawley. BTW, there's a Youtube video "Shit the Dowager Says" - hilarious!
Mr Bates and Anna
my faves..
as for Violet.. maybe another series?? Yoda on a bad day??
HUGGGGGGGGGGGG
I haven't started DA yet, but now will have to and BG. Just finished Ghost Whisperer and am on Medium. Before that was Mission Impossible (the series, not the stupid movies).
My wife has just gotten hooked via Netflix on the Downton Abbey show but I have yet to watch. After your blog I will have to give it try. I am sure we will have some interesting discussions based on your insights. I love PBS but watch mostly their documentaries and, of course, Antiques Road Show. R

I, too, am hooked on Downton Abbey. Have only sat through one episode of BG (my husband forced me to) so I can't comment on that. yes, the house is an organism, an entity! And what about Maggie Smith and her magnificent quips?
Downton, I have a feeling, is addictive.
Great calls, from one who likes Battlestar and Downtown Abbey.
I didn't think anyone but my wife and I watched Downton Abbey-- What's "Battlestar Galactica"?
This is so much fun. I just happen to be a Downton fanatic. On my way upstairs to watch my recording of Sunday night's episode now. Can't wait.
Did I hear you say Men of Downton Abbey? Hubba.

My ratings:
( a few spoilers)

Lord Grantham ***** five stars
(was four stars until season 2 ep. 6 when he got sexily pissed off about Sybil and the chauffer, then ravished a maid, then remembered he loved his wife)

Mr. Bates***** five stars, even after pasty white jiggly arms were revealed in less than erotic wedding bed scene.

Carson***** sigh. Those eyebrows. Gruff yet tender. Looks fetching when sick in bed with Spanish flu and mussed hair. Adorable when practicing his telephone skills in a cutaway.

Sir Richard *** physically a hottie, but attitude toward women is a turn off.

Bad Thomas*** sexy gay guy ( **** stars when howling and hurling and slashing bags of flour cut with plaster)

Mathew* too young
William* too young
Whatever that chauffer's name is *too young
Mosely*too drunk
i haven't seen either so I can't participate, but i'm waiting for teh right weekend to binge out on Downton. Your mash-up reminds me of the Rome, Sweet Rome phenomenon. It began as a sort of Open Call on Reddit and is now supposed to be getting optioned as a movie.
