Fight Corporate Personhood: Sign Petition

Rate: 16 Flag

The real "wave" this midterm election was not Republican or tea party but corporate. A tsunami of secret cash flooded our elections and swept the party responsible for the lost decade of the middle class into a position of power.

In the SCOTUS opinion, the Supreme Court legalized corporate bribes by affirming "corporate personhood", giving transational corporations first amendment rights not only to use their vast resources to overwhelm the American political process but to do it in privacy.

This cannot stand.

A Constitutional amendment is required to state clearly that the Founding Fathers meant the Bill of Right protections for living, breathing human beings who had the inalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and not corporations who only pursue lies, liberty to pollute and obscene profits.

The website Free Speech for the People has background information and a  petition to sign.

Use this link for an exhaustive background on corporate personhood.

I'm there. This pisses me off to no end. I've been going to write about it, but I'm trying to quit cussing so much!
Good job, Scanner. Only used one off-color word!

This may be our only way to stem this tide.
STOP THE ADVANCE OF THE 451s
Thanks, Elijah Rising! (And good luck with your book! Somewhere on here is a listing of books published by OSers...)
Thanks for the headsup. I shall check it out
l'heure bleue,
Thanks, my friend.

Trilogy,
Thanks as well.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that we, up here in Canada have defused that particular ill. We don't allow donations to exceed a certain amount from anyone, and all donations must be disclosed by the Party receiving them. Our government provides most of the money for each Political Party to run their campaign. Unfortunately the amount of such grants is determined by the number of votes they garnered in the previous election. This puts new parties, such as the Greens, at a distinct disadvantage.

^R^
May I use two?
Great post and rated with hugs
skypixieO,

What is it about the northernmost countries which breeds such sanity?

Linda,
I love the shades, doll!
Rated and I'll sign it. Think I've signed several on this issue...there are more than one going around. Awful decision.
Thanks, themanhattankid, I so agree.

Justice Stevens was scathing in his dissent:

""In the context of election to public office, the distinction between corporate and human speakers is significant. Although they make enormous contributions to our society, corporations are not actually members of it. They cannot vote or run for office. Because they may be managed and controlled by nonresidents, their interests may conflict in fundamental respects with the interests of eligible voters. The financial resources, legal structure, and instrumental orientation of corporations raise legitimate concerns about their role in the electoral process. Our lawmakers have a compelling constitutional basis, if not also a democratic duty, to take measures designed to guard against the potentially deleterious effects of corporate spending in local and national races.

The majority's approach to corporate electioneering marks a dramatic break from our past."
thanks, O'Stephanie. I shall sign as you suggest.

power to the people.
Thank you, doloresflores. (Have always loved your name.)
Thanks for the link o'steph.
Abrawang,
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
Came back to bump the ratings, .which leads me to wonder how, if we can't get them to relocate the ratings button, we can get the Supreme Court to rock back on its heels.

I have little faith in this measure, but I will support it.
sagemerlin,

Optimism is a little hard to come by these days but it is there. This effort simply has to be begun. At the very least, it will educate more americans and lure the Corporatists to show themselves from behind the curtain.

What gives me hope is Justice Stevens dissent and the many legal folks who are committed to this effort.

Thanks for the bump.
Thanks so much - it feels better when we can do something. rated
Stephanie, I was just reading about the war Teddy Roosevelt waged against corporate influence...that was a hundred years ago!
Will do. The damage this decision caused is calculable now (see "Election Results") But the ripple effects as it goes on are terrifying.
Thanks for posting this!
Trish rainbow,
It makes me feel better to post about this. At least it will get some attention, I hope, and alert those who are unaware of the danger to our democracy.

Fay,
I generally poo-poo conspiracy theories but this one is real. This has been on the corporate agenda for a century. It has been just the past couple decades though that they have be3gun pressing for more of their corporate personhood "rights".

Chicago,
Man, so glad always to see you here. you have given me some of my favorite reading experiences. Love your voice.
Thanks!
yes, the political struggle that matters isn't Dem or Repub, liberal or "conservative" (can't take that label seriously), it's between the HaveMores and the other 98% of the country

time to get yer class war pants on
You got it, Roy!

I am hoping that things such as this petition will raise folks consciousness of what is happening.
I have been writing about corporate personhood for years and blogged here not long ago about the landmark decision of Santa Clara v Southern Pacific. All that has changed is the Robert's Court ruling that Corporations can give as much soft money as any individual, all they want. I would go so far to say that the greatest beneficiary of the 14th Amendment is not blacks, or breathing citizens but corporate America.
David,
Thanks!
I will look up your article. Sounds as if you have a wealth of knowledge about it.
I do believe you are correct about the 14th amendment. However, the corporatons, as you undoubtedly know, used the 5th first!
