Americans United for Civility Petition
WE THE UNDERSIGNED American citizens,
Mournful of the deaths of many at the hands of one in Tucson,
Inspired by the bravery of heroes who risked their lives to save
others, and
Mindful of the present state of incivility which exists in public discourse;
Do hereby call upon elected officials, the media, and all citizens to:
Reflect upon the recent tragedy,
Examine their contribution to our present political climate, and
Commit to discourse that is civil and does honor to the United States of America.

and sending the link!
You just might be surprised. This petition orginated over at another site where I post my more political posts where I have six cosponsors of all political stripes. One person who signed up said he was usually uncivil but would try from now on.
Spudman,
I can always count on you!
I'll try again later, after I have had a milkshake and a lie down.
Have never done a petition before but felt that this called for it. I wil be responsible for sending it to intended recipients.
...next please,
Thanks, my friend. Was so happy to see your positive post yesterday!
Thanks, gal. Can always count on you for all the positive stuff.
Linda,
Could not get by without your hugs!
Motoring homeless,
Gack! I just checked the petition link and it is working for me.
Thanks for your signature and your good wishes. As of now, I have 35 signatures and rising.
It denotes a level of judgment and contempt that literally is contributing to the disintegration of discourse.
On the other hand, I think that with civility, liberals also need to stand up for themselves and for our beliefs. Palin's diatribe this morning is far from stupid. But I don't agree with her analysis.
See how easy that was? Trying to prove that Reagan or Bush were stupid never helped liberals to defeat them or their unhelpful ideas. In fact, the smarter George H. Bush who had ideas that were more helpful for the country was not re-elected.
These are my current thoughts. Thanks for posting this O'Stephanie.
You make so much sense and pick up on something that progressives miss:
"as a liberal contribution to the new era of civility, I humbly suggest that liberals stop calling conservatives "stupid."
Also "uninformed" and "ignorant". Just because progressives consider these words loftier than "violent words" does not mean that they do not hurt. When you hurt others, they react in kind.
You can never hope to persuade anyone of your position by fighting with them. It is so much better to dance--take one step forward and, in many cases, your partner will follow. And partners we are in this experiment called America.
yes, yes. I need to think about this more. Maybe I will write a post about it. thank-you.
When you write that post, please PM me.
Thanks Kenny! We are up to 43 signatures now.
Glad you did not see any political ads!!
But is it bad simply to hope that Rupert Murdoch dies, in whatever manner, and soon?
I thank you. Saw your signature earlier and was so pleased.Your faith in me is humbling.
RW,
Thanks! I am so pleased that your articulate and informative articles are getting attention around here. We need you!
Jon,
Privately, yes. Publically, it would be better to criticize the deregulation that allowed most of our media to be in so few hands. News is broken for sure.
We are tired of blood and talk of blood. We need to come together in order to survive as a nation.
thanks for the comments, one and all! Up to 45 signatures.
As you undoubtedly know, this is exactly what has happened in the past. However, for my part, I pledge to hover over my first-bron petition and send it to as many outlets as I can find.
Want to restate that I would like everyone to send me PMs of recipients they would like to receive this petition when it is full whenever that is. Contact info would be appreciated!
Also anyone at any time can send a link from the petition page to anyone they so choose.
You are a dear. Thank you. I just had to do something other than just cry through the news every day.
47 signatures now...
I know you and I was impressed! Your signature seemed more emphatic to me.
Hope everything goes well for you in China, Texas!
Thank you so much. We are at 57 now.
Maybe it will catch on...
Kanuk & Abrawing,
It is certainly worth a try. We cannot let our cynicism stop us from believing that we can make a difference. I think of the words of Thomas Paine in his 1776 paphlet Common Sense:
"We have it in our power to make the world over again."
Maybe President Obama's speech will have its desired effect...
