I used to work in an isolated "research park" area where lunch options were minimal. One of the options was a pizza buffet. I think it was Pizza Hut. Large groups of asocial techies would converge at lunch time for the buffet.
The restaurant, aiming to maximize profits, would bring out veggie pizzas and cheese pizzas galore. People would pick at the offered pizzas and linger around the buffet counter.
Then a restaurant employee would emerge from the kitchen with a single pepperoni pizza and chaos would ensue. People shoved each other, angled for position, sneered, connived, and generally degraded themselves for the sake of a slice of mediocre pizza.
I lost a lot of hope and good will toward man watching that happen. The present situation in the country constantly reminds me of that experience.
