Ft. Hood: Potential Lessons

Rate: 3 Flag

Two elements regarding the Ft. Hood shooting catch my attention. (Admittedly, the investigation is in it's early stages, so some speculation is involved.)

1) A civilian cop trained in dealing with these situations ended the shooting by taking down the shooter.

2) Investigators are looking into whether some soldiers may have been shot accidentally by others trying to shoot the gunman. Soldiers trained to use weapons (for combat situations) may have inadvertantly shot fellow soldiers.

What does this say to those who think that arming everyone will solve our gun violence issues?  Does knowing how to discharge my gun (or even knowing how to fight the Taliban) make me capable of playing cop/hero?

One has to wonder how forthcoming the military will be on the details of this incident.
I agree and wonder how it was so easy for the shooter to have a weapon or weapons and a supply of ammunition. Will the military review tell us in detail about this? It is only one element of what will undoubtedly be a never-ending story but it should be presented. Your loyal supporter in a very gray and very dark Sweden.
I saw a great t-shirt yesterday: Guns don't protect people, people do. Heavy on the kumbayosis? Sure. But spot-on. I liked it very much. I am soooo saddened by the Ft Hood incident. I come from a big military extended family (our dinner tables used to have such rowdy discussions!) and this hit me hard. Thanks for your post!
