My comments sometimes outnumber my "thumbs". Why? Thumbs inspire confidence. Isn't nice to have your confidence inspired? Well, do unto others, no? But even if you're a dick, thumb anyway. Karl Rove would. It's free, fast, & effortless self-publicity in the left sidebar on the Open Salon homepage, the sidebar labeled 'Activity Feed' for good reason, because it showcases activities, like thumbing. Observe:
I thumb at the top; and if I get to the bottom, I sometimes comment; but not always, because commenting takes time, time I could be thumbing my way toward another post I dig, read, & finish. Or find nothing I dig, give up, and reread Skip Williamson's Art & Life--my favorite blog on the Internet.

As to rating, just for the sake of rating, it seems to lose its effectivness. I have noticed that a lot of bloggers rate, but don't comment. I did a post on this and the gist is that many feel that the comments they were going to say on a particular post had already been said.
But since I usually don't read other people's comments on other blogger's post, I just comment.

Rated for the Hell of It. ; )
I typically won't thumb Editor's picks because they already get enough visibility.
I also won't thumb something if it's simply a mundane description of Aunt Millie's cornbread recipe, but the suckered me into reading it by using a headline like "I had sex with a two-headed, space alien Elvis clone!"
But I'll thumb this, just for its value in creating discussion about what merits a rating.
