panera

First a warning to my OS family and community.  This is not a rant or a b*#ch session.  Not a what is wrong with the government, politics, politicians, celebrities or you piece.  This is the best thing I have heard in a while and whatever their deep down reasons are for doing this I am applauding Panera and their newest non-profit store.  Yes, I said NON-PROFIT store.

So, what does that mean?  This is a store where there are no prices listed for anything and no taxes (as it is non-profit) and you decide how much, or how little, you are going to pay.  This new store is now open Clayton, Missouri, an upscale suburb of St. Louis.  Panera is a national bakery and restaurant chain with 1400 locations.  The menu at the new non-profit store is exactly the same as the other 1400 locations, the only difference being that the customer pays what ever they can and feel is fair in a donation jar.

The pilot store is run by a non-profit organization and Panera is using it’s non-profit organization to support the store by paying the “restaurant's bills, including staff salaries, rent and food costs. At the end of each month, the foundation will tally donations to see if they cover food costs. The Panera parent company won't bear losses if the experiment fails.[1]  If on the other hand it is a success, Panera will open more with an eye to opening a non-profit in each of the markets they are now in.

There are other such operations including one, I am proud to say, in Salt Lake City. The One World Salt Lake City restaurant has operated as a nonprofit with pay-what-you-want prices since 2003, said founder Denise Cerreta. She works for a foundation that helps similar restaurants open around the county. She said the places don't get swarmed by crowds and emptied, but have managed to stay afloat based on the honor system.”

"It somehow stays in balance," Cerreta said. "I think ultimately people are good. They want to contribute."[2]

Why are they doing this?  Is it a publicity stunt?  An advertising gimmick?  I don’t know and I don’t care if it is just for advertising and publicity.  It is a good thing and I hope anyone in the Clayton, MO area will make a point to support it.

Dad used to tell me about a cafeteria in Salt Lake during the first great depression where you took what you wanted and paid on the honor system, no one checking to see if you paid or how much. He said they were always money ahead at the end of the month.

Kudos to Panera and One World.
Wow, this sounds awesome! Looks yummy too!

-R-
Love this idea and I will be checking out One World soon. Dad sure told you alot of things Cap'n, or you just have a better memory than I do for the growing up years.

It does look yummy Lady Miko but that is one item I won't likely be indulging in, but I'm sure they have something I will eat!
Wow! How cool! Thank you for posting this! It may help with a tax write off...no worries on that! xox
Hey! Good point Robin! I hadn't even thought of that. :))
How intriguing! I kept looking for the punch line, but didn't see it. I sure hope it works. It could start a new economical revolution on how we do business here in America. The cynical part of me doesn't think it's going to take off. I thinkt there are too many people who will take advantage of the offer.
I know, Bonnie! One won't kill us though, right? lol

Patricia: I hope it takes off too. I know there will be some who will take advantage of it but I'm going to put my faith in the overall goodness of the general population and pray my faith doesn't get stomped on.
Sounds cool! R
Definitely Thoth and good to see you. :))
Had a lot of conversations when we commuted together and shooting pool in the basement late at night, little sis. Plus I had 6 more years to hear the stories.
Very true Cap'n. I do remember playing pool though.
Wow, Stars!! Aren't you awesome for bringing this to our attention?!! Would be great if this is business with an eye to the future... Love to you, for this, especially! Julie
Worth a trip. Anywhere near the big arch?
Wowza! I love Panera Bread's Sesame Semolina bread and would pay the full price plus tax if they had such a store here.
Awesome, no matter if it's just a ploy to get attention. Rated.
Thanks Julie! I would be awesome if this business model really caught on!

Leon, it is a suburb of St. Louis so it can't be too far from the arch.

You're one up one me Xenonlit! I haven't been in one yet. I do think there is a fairly new store here somewheres. Have to check it out!

Completely agree Tink!
I'd love to see a follow up to this story with the results - did donations exceed costs? Man, I sure hope so. I'm optimistic/naive enough to predict they will!
I'm with you Kit. I hope I can remember to check up on them to see how it goes.
Yea team! I'll be visiting my alama mater (Washington UNiversity) this fall and I'll go in there and pay Starbuck's prices for my coffee in support. Thanks for sharing.
There has got to be a catch. Microchips in the salami so's they can track customers' shopping habits. Of course. Else why risk Animal House prank night when all the toga-draped future derivatives traders come in, fill their book bags, leave a nickel in the jar and hawhawhaw their way back to somebody's dad's Lexus? Microchips. It's the only possible answer.
Clark, Clark, Clark.... so cynical! It's not in the salami, it's in the cinnamon buns!

Exactly Jane! Now you've got it! :))
