WATER ON ROCK, A POST 911 POEM

               Water on rock

               light on water

               foam

               It is eternal

               It laps joyfully,

              peacefully, solemnly, sternly

              The world goes on

              continually 

               Rocks are strong

               though water, gentle water

               can shave rock down

               Leave it less than what it was

               Cities are built on rock

               New York City's skyscrapers

               are built on rock

               Water under sky

               clear blue September sky

               People die, people are born

               Water gentle water

               fierce water

               rises

               falls

               flows

               around the city

has an almost haiku simplicity and elegance

makes me think:
soil: ground rock
mud: ground rock water
rapids: water over rock
moon: rock over water
