I am a poet-essayist-singer-songwriter, and advocate for the poor, with a teaching and counseling background. I grew up in Florida, now live in Arden, North Carolina. I also lived in New England 20 years. I love nature, music, and poetry. I am married and we have three adult-kids between us and four grandkids! I am interfaith, leaning toward Taoist, Celtic, and Native American spirituality, and an "Obama Democrat." Torture is morally wrong, and ultimately ineffective

Rate: 3 Flag

This is in response to the letter published by USA Today May 6, written by Alan Winters, who states, "What's wrong with a little torture," to get information and save lives. The problem is, Mr. Winters, that, to begin with, torture is torture, a little or a lot. Secondly, torture is inimical to our values as a people; when we engage in it we stoop to the level of our "enemies." Third, I reject the notion that we are saving lives by employing these tactics. The hatred that is generated in the Middle East by our use of torture has, undoubtedly, served as a great recruiting tool of radical Muslims, leading to more terrorism, more killing, more tragedy. Many conservatives (not all) do not get it, or don't care: torture as an interrogation tool is immoral, as well as ultimately ineffective.

Hear! Hear! Every time someone deends the use of torture, we should speak out as you have. Here's my post on the issue of torture:

When we see letters like this in the media, it is incumbent upon us to respond. If we don't stand up against the extreme right, the country remains in peril.
Torture does nothing but de-humanize us and is completely and undeniably immoral.
