The Attack on Congresswoman Giffords: a Huge Tragedy

Rate: 15 Flag

Whatever the motivation of the insane person who gunned down Congresswoman Giffords, it is clear that we must cool the political rhetoric in this country, especially emanating from teaparty people and the extreme right.

This is a huge tragedy for our nation. I will do whatever I can as an individual to stand up to those who spew hate and demonize the political opposition.

Massively angry about this senseless tragedy right now.
The fascists are amongst us...arm yourselves. Right wing motherfuckers don't know right from wrong.

Amen brother - sign me on.
Time for hatespeak to end...it is hatriotism, with nothing whatsoever to do with being a patriot...or a Christian...etc. etc etc. amen.
When I first read about this in Open Salon I had a feeling of dread. Then to see all the comments and the links to Sarah Palin and Fox News. It is a rumbling that starts deep down in our country and this seems to be a bubble rising to the surface in a boil which I can feel coming. Im mad and scared.
Right wing terrorism. I'm sure he was delusional--but then all his delusions, his target, the gun nut thing, his liking Mein Kampf... There is an atmosphere that's been created in America by the right...ignoring that is like ignoring the hatred that Dan White expressed before he killed Milk. Then, I suppose, the blood sugar made him do it? I wonder what Loughner's twinkie defense will be.

It's horrible, but let's step up and defend ourselves from anyone (from any political extremism) The person that did this had problems that go way beyond politics.

Sadly, I fear there will be more of this.
Have been watching news, msnbc, portraying gunman as very singular, nutjob and that "this tragedy was not politically motivated"...at least for now, it would seem very random and that he premeditated this act (farewell on line to friends) and former classmates who said he was crazy and rambled nonsense in college classes...

"Cooling the political rhetoric in this country" is imperative as it is, for so many reasons that are negatively impacting this nation and bringing us down to new lows.
I'm with you, Patrick. Trying to find something positive in this, it occurs to me that the buildup of polarized rhetoric in recent years is similar to the late '60s, which climaxed with the Kent and Jackson State shootings. That slap of reality seemed to wake us up as a nation at least to where we started communicating more reasonably with each other. Maybe we'll back away from the brink we were heading toward now that this tragedy has gotten everybody's attention. If nothing else maybe it will shut Palin the hell up.
I, too, fear we've only just begun. We've got to stop this!

Definitely need to cool the political rhetoric.

If I had the power for ten minutes, I would render every gun in this nation not belonging to a member of legitimate law enforcement into a twisted, smoking useless thing that could never fire another bullet. Afterwards they can "open carry" and"bear that" all they want. But I'm sick of reading about shooting tragedies like this. If you have to prove a certain competence and maturity to operate a car, you should have to prove competence and maturity to own a weapon capable of killing another person.

I think right now the second amendment is my LEAST favorite amendment EVER.
While I'm shocked, I'm not surprised. How sad is that?
When did it get so bad in the United States, that we are now dealing with " hate politics" ? Rated.
Be Careful With Accusations

America is in such a state of anger that now Liberals and Conservatives are going to be blaming each other. A fever pitch of accusations is flying around, about all subjects involved. The country is about to enter the realm of the idiots in Europe with their violence. Violence does beget violence. The second amendment rights will be attacked along with Conservative political organizations. Everyone will be out on a witch hunt.

This is all because of an evil soul that decided to take lives for his own personal cause. These same evil souls are on both sides of the political spectrum, as well as the religious spectrum, such as the Muslim in Fort Hood who also killed a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

Conservatives and Liberals have always been targets of assassinations. Now it seems outrage fires up when it is one of their own. Giffords happens to be a blue dog Dem who stayed central. Neither Conservatives nor Liberals had anything to gain and everything to lose by trying to hurt such a person. She voted both left and right. If this evil soul was out to make a political statement, he could not have picked a worse person. Giffords stood for both sides of the political agendas and is pro gun rights. Only an evil soul trying to stir up trouble between two different ideologies would have done this.

Guns do not kill people, people kill people. Trying to take guns away from honest American citizens will allow only the criminals to have illegal arms. Liberals will have accomplished an even more dangerous society at the mercy of armed hoodlums, without the ability to protect themselves. That would be an anarchist’s dream. Hmmmm, could this be an anarchist trying to cause violence to erupt between two different party ideologies.

Bill Ayers was bombing buildings and hurting people in the sixties and yet, he is now a hero to Liberals. Liberal union leaders are threatening violence, such as Andy Stern. Andy Stern said, "If we can’t use the power of persuasion, we will use the persuasion of power”. Reagan had an assassination attempt, to which Liberals were applauding. Liberals were defending the Fort Hood Muslim, Nidal Malik Hasan, incessantly. How soon we forget. The point is, neither Liberals nor Conservatives can blame this event on a political party.

This man, by choosing Giffords, is proof he is just an evil soul and not an armed political assassin. Get a grip, because violence can get out of hand very quickly, especially in the heightened anger of America today.
Just a response to Tommy T:

I appreciate his comment but some things in it bothered me, especially the following:

"Bill Ayers was bombing buildings and hurting people in the sixties and yet, he is now a hero to Liberals. The point is, neither Liberals nor Conservatives can blame this event on a political party."

I am a moderate-liberal, I think, well, call me a liberal, but I do not call Bill Ayers a hero (I don't particularly like him, actually), I did not cheer when Reagan got shot, union leaders are NOT en masse threatening violence, etc.

We all must be careful with generalizations, including me, accusing ALL tea party people of promulgating hate.

We cannot forget the horror of radical Muslim terrorism; but neither can we forget some of the atrocities committed by Israel against Palestinians.

But thanks for taking the time to make this comment.
Let us not forget about the atrocities committed against Israel by Palestinians and other countries as well.

Unfortunately. you can see this is a never ending circle of violence caught in a loop of hate and death.

Where does it stop? It will not stop by one side blaming and telling the other side to stop. Each side has to begin with themselves.
