A personal commitment...
To say what I mean and mean what I say, without beating around the bush, and without being abusive. That's one of my main goals in life. To say the unsayable and do the undoable, when it is clearly the right thing to say or do. To think creatively about what is really called for in life, not worrying about what people may think of me. I like it when I see someone looking at me in a way that conveys, "I can't believe you just said or did that." Especially when I simply told the truth, or did something to advance justice for myself or others.
In politics, this is no time for liberals and moderates and conservatives with a conscience to hide under a rock and become mealy-mouthed. The danger from the far right is too real. These are people who actually want to undue equal rights and prevent the advancement of civil rights. These are people who want to impose one religion on everyone and that religion is Christianity. These are people who want to feather the nest of the rich while decimating the poor, driving them further down into an economic abyss.
On a personal level, I do not allow myself or my wife to bamboozled by scam artists on the internet, telephone, and face-to-face. I do not allow myself to be blatently denigrated without standing up for myself. As I said in a previous post, passive-aggressiveness is more difficult to deal with, but a way must be found, because those prone to passive-aggressiveness are adept at tearing down someone's self-esteem in a subtle and manipulative fashion.
